Country Info Eritrea Introduction Eritrea General Data Eritrea Maps Eritrea Culture ... Eritrea Time and Date Eritrea History Back to Top The earliest food-producing inhabitants of Eritrea are thought to have moved from the Nile valley into the Mereb-Setit lowlands in about 4000 bc. Over the next several thousand years, Eritrea experienced migrations of Nilotic, Cushitic, and Semitic-speaking peoples into what became one of the earliest regions of crop and livestock domestication in Africa. From as early as 3000 bc, Eritrea was involved in trade on the Red Sea. In the 4th century ad Eritrea was a part of the ancient Ethiopian kingdom of Aksum. It flourished as a semi-independent state under nominal Ethiopian sovereignty until it was annexed in the 16th century by the expanding Ottoman Empire. Beginning about 1000 BC, Semitic peoples from the South Arabian kingdom of Saba' (or Sheba) migrated across the Red Sea and absorbed the Cushitic inhabitants of the Eritrean coast and adjacent highlands. These Semitic invaders, possessing a well-developed culture, established the kingdom of Aksum, which, by the end of the 4th century AD, ruled the northern stretches of the Ethiopian Plateau and the eastern lowlands. An important trade route led from the port of Adulis, near modern Zula, to the city of Aksum, the capital, located in what is now the Ethiopian province of Tigray. Eritrea was established as an Italian colony on January 1, 1890. Italian rule lasted until World War II (1939-1945) when British forces conquered the territory. British military administration lasted from 1941 until 1952 when the United Nations decided to federate Eritrea with Ethiopia as a compromise between Ethiopian claims for annexation and Eritrean demands for independence. Once in control, Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie moved to end Eritrean autonomy, and by 1962 Eritrea was transformed into an Ethiopian province.

Eritrea Up until recently the name 'Eritrea' was a synonym for 'war' and an antonym for 'relaxing with a gin by the seaside', but remarkably the definitions are starting to be reversed. The destination that popular (but not always accurate) belief once held was avoided by all except the foolhardy or the mercenary now has a peace agreement with Ethiopia under its belt and a chance to invite the world to see that its inhabitants are actually among the most vibrant and friendly people in Africa. Eritrea is battle-scarred from 30 years of fighting for independence and, more recently, from a border dispute with Ethiopia that was akin to two dogs fighting over an old bone. But its people are pursuing peacetime as vigorously as they pursued conflict, with swathes of the major cities and towns being rebuilt, the road between Adi Quala and Adwa (Ethiopia) reopened (although the border remains closed) and large amounts of Asmara gin being downed to fuel the favoured pastime of dancing. More of Eritrea's fascinating archaeological ruins are being unearthed around the country (as opposed to more being bombed into existence) and the waters of the Red Sea are beckoning divers with flourishing stocks of marine life. You no longer need a flak jacket to visit Eritrea, just a desire to engage the famously hospitable locals.
    Warning
Both Eritrea and Ethiopia are claiming victory in a long-standing border dispute, settled in April 2002 by a Hague court ruling. The Hague ruling demarcates once and for all the 1000km (620mi) border that had been the source of a two-year war between the nations. The two countries signed a peace agreement in December 2000, but disagreements over the border kept relations tense.

The West and Democracy in Africa
    BY GETAHUN GEBRE AMLAK
    March 23rd, 1999
The end of apartheid in South Africa, the promising developments in Uganda and Ghana, the fall of the Derg in Ethiopia and the peaceful and dignified separation of Eritrea from Ethiopia gave a great deal of hope as to the future of the African continent. With the exception of the conflicts in Somalia and the Sudan it seemed that Africa was on its way to a new era, a new beginning.
However, the hopes were tempered when new problems surfaced, such as the genocide in Rwanda and the coup and counter coup in the Congo, in Sierra Leone and other trouble spots. In the Horn the one unknown quantity was Isaias Afeworki of Eritrea. He was a confused and confusing figure. He was seen as a young, apparently dynamic ex-guerrilla leader who might bring freedom, justice and peace to his people. This wrong impression prevailed because his track record was unknown to the outside world.
We knew that he had spent over two and half decades in the bush fighting, or rather leading, an armed struggle against the Ethiopian government. But no sooner had he consolidated his power in Asmara, he decided that there was no room for more than one political party in Eritrea. He also started to fight with his neighbours, and he kept on training conscripts and building a large army.
He would not allow the evolution of a free press, nor would he respect basic human rights in Eritrea. As a dictator it became his prerogative to give or deny.
