Most societies have also had apprenticeship systems. Teachers have always worked to shape desired convictions, knowledge, and behavior. Modern education includes elementary, secondary, and higher schools, and less formally, is provided through libraries and museums, community organizations, and the mass media. Distance learning allows continuing education to those for whom it is inconvenient, or impossible, to physically attend a class.
