http://www.pastornet.net.au/fwn/1999/oct/art07.html
Special Programs at Pacific Hills Christian School Tina Whiting by Tina Whiting Director of Special Programs All parents desire the best education for their children. Parents of children with special needs are often frustrated because help available for all sorts of reasons, does not meet their special needs. This is especially true for children whose disability is not easily defined, borderline or not recognised. Educationalist researchers and those working with children with disabilities all believe that inclusion in the mainstream is beneficial for disabled and non-disabled children. However, while inclusion is the preferred method of teaching, it is not always the best for special skill areas such as reading and mathematics. This also applies for gifted children as well, who may need a special program to meet their needs within the classroom. Each child should be taught to reach their highest possible potential spiritually, socially, academically and physically in accordance with their strengths and weaknesses. Each child should have the opportunity to begin and grow in a personal living daily relationship with Christ as Lord and Saviour. These principles, when applied in the practices of Pacific Hills Christian School, give the motivation for the inclusion of all students, whatever their abilities in the structure of the school. Special provision is made for students who have special needs, enabling them to achieve according to their abilities. These special needs may include students with disabilities, students with learning difficulties, students with gifts and talents, students from non English speaking backgrounds and students with behavioural disorders. The process of inclusion benefits the total student body as well as the families and staff associated with the school.

Tutoring Blind and Visually-Impaired ESL Students
KAIZEN PROGRAM for New English Learners with Visual Limitations
Assessment of Students The Kaizen Program doesn't use the ESLOA test for assessing blind and low vision students, since many of its questions are centered on picture identification. However, it does use actual objects, including things that range in size from furniture to coins, instead of pictures. People who are totally blind, whether they have been blind from birth or have lost sight in later life, can usually identify familiar objects by touch. And people with low vision can often see enough to identify familiar objects visually (with or without touch), even if they can't see enough to identify pictures. Kaizen is a small nonprofit with only two staff members, so, in order to increase the number of students served, it is currently partnering with the St. James ESL Program and training blind and visually-impaired volunteer tutors to work with blind and low vision ESL students. In order to make the intake assessment for blind and low vision students roughly equivalent to that for fully sighted St. James ESL students it adapted the intake test, including replacing pictures with objects. For example, if a picture shows a clock face, a tactile clock is used that has “feelable” and movable hands, and both tactile print numbers and Braille numbers. Also used are such common objects as spoons, napkins, jackets, etc. Questions that involve visuals such as maps, phone book listings, and traffic signs can be replaced with roughly equivalent questions involving things that people with visual limitations will be utilizing.

THE TEACHER'S CORNER We must do more than teach students to surf the net, we must also teach them how to make waves (Shneiderman) When teachers create Web pages, they very often do so for very practical reasons and because they actually need to achieve teaching goals. What can these goals be?
    - Finding the best possible ways to guide and advise students while they are accessing the web.
    - Being visible whenever you want to communicate with others.
    - Creating a class electronic bank that can be used to show and praise the progress made over the year. - Gathering resources really adapted to the diverse levels and possibilities of our students. This is particularly true if you have to teach teens with disabilities who deserve special needs. Special Education
Various special education services are available at Farmington Middle School West. The area's are as follows:
    • Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) Emotional/Behavioral Disorders (E/BD) Mild/Moderate Mentally Impaired (MMMI) Other Health Impaired (OHI)
Students are referred for initial testing by either a parent or a teacher. A pre-referral process takes place in attempts to resolve the concerns. If concerns continue, the referral is brought to a Child Study Team where decisions are made about testing. After an assessment is complete, the team, consisting of the parent and staff involved with the child, meets and reviews the results to determine if special education services are needed. In order to qualify for special education services, certain criteria must be met as described below.
    Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD)
"Specific Learning Disability" means a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, that may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or to do mathematical calculations. The term includes such conditions as perceptual disabilities, brain injury, minimal brain dysfunction, dyslexia, and developmental aphasia.
