A few history briefs: MENELIK II (1844-1913), emperor of Ethiopia (1889-1913), who transformed the country from a collection of semi-independent states into a united nation. As ruler (1865-89) of the kingdom of Shoa, in central Ethiopia, he conquered the Galla people to the south and annexed their land. When he succeeded John IV (r. 1872-89) as emperor in 1889, he united Shoa with the northern kingdoms of Tigre and Amhara, and signed the Treaty of Wichale with Italy. A dis agreement over the interpretation of the treaty led to a war in which Menelik's forces defeated an Italian army at Adwa (1896). The European powers then recognized Ethiopian independence. During his reign he suppressed the Ethiopian slave trade, curbed the feudal nobility, and founded the city of Addis Ababa. Meles Zenawi's [Article for those two leaders was obtained from Embassy of Ethiopia.]

BRIDGING
THE CULTURAL GAP
by Philip Briggs
"In July 1994, I found myself flying to Addis Ababa to research this guide. In the months that followed, I discovered Ethiopia to be every bit as fantastic as I had hoped: culturally, historically and scenically, it is the most extraordinary country I have ever visited."
And since returning home, infatuated to the point of obsession, I have discovered that it is impossible to talk about Ethiopia without first saying what it is not. Ethiopia has become practically synonymous with famine and desert, to the extent that the sales manager of Ethiopian Airline's Johanesburg office regularly receives tactful enquires about what, if any, food is served on their flights. That, in a continent plagued by drought and erratic rainfall, one particular famine has left the world with the misconception that Ethiopia is nothing by a desert says much about the working of the mass media. It says rather less about Ethiopia. In a section that dwells extensively on matters of culture, it seems relevant to state that I grew up in South Africa and have spent three years, on and off, travelling independently in various parts of Africa. I am not so arrogant that I claim to understand African cultures or to be able to speak for all Africans. On the contrary, a major motivation behind writing a section of this sort is that moving regularly between African and Western cultures has made me acutely conscious of how difficult it is for anybody of a Western upbringing (and that includes myself) to form unprejudiced opinions on matters African. Nevertheless, my mental and practical involvement with Africa over the years has allowed me to think through most travel-related issues as they relate to Africa from a less culture-bound perspective than could a one-off visitor - no less so because I grew up in a culture notable for its overtly racist and Afrophobic propaganda. If apartheid bequeathed me one thing, it is a vicious distrust of dogma and any other received wisdom.

CULTURAL
PERSPECTIVES
by Philip Briggs
"If I have learnt one thing from my African travels, it is the impenetrability of other cultures. There is much to be said for the cosmopolitan openness to other cultures which, in somewhere like London, allows you to flit from Indian to Cantonese to Italian restaurant, to hear music and read books from all over the world, and to visit museums and art galleries which celebrate the diversity of human cultural evolution. But it does, I suspect, mislead many Westerners into the feeling that other cultures are more accessible and easily assimilated than is really the case. This can often lead to misunderstanding, confusion and disappointment when confronted with a country as culturally self-contained and unfamiliar as Ethiopia."
Most of us are, of course, aware of this on some level; nevertheless, travelling amid an unfamiliar culture brings the truth of it home more than can any textbook. It is easy, when confronted by an unfamiliar culture, to attribute everything you see to culture and ignore the role of individuality. Ethiopians are no less individuals than we are; all human behaviour is found there. Like many points relating to culture, I suspect this is more readily grasped on an intellectual level than it is incorporated into our gut thinking. Or, to put it more bluntly, when confronted by a bore in Ethiopia, it helps to retain the perspective that you are dealing first and foremost with a bore, and that it is merely the manifestation of their tediousness which is cultural.

Posted to the web December 13, 2002 AFROMET, the Association for the Return of Ethiopia's Maqdala Treasures, reacted yesterday to the recent statement of European and American Museum Directors opposing the restoration of cultural artifacts to their country of origin. AFROMET said that the Museum Directors, seeking to cling on to their treasures, many of them acquired by loot or other doubtful practices, claimed that their collections enable audiences to gain a comparative view of world culture. AFROMET, in its statement signed by its Chair, Professor Andreas Eshete, declared that the Museum Directors' statement was no more than Eurocentric special pleading. Referring to the extensive looting of religious and secular artifacts from Maqdala in 1868, AFROMET declared that the Museum Directors' statement ignored the fact that such acquisition had no basis in international law, and was indeed no more than a theft, involving sacrilege, according to a statement from AFROMET.
