Ethiopia
Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Unique among African countries, the ancient Ethiopian monarchy maintained its freedom from colonial rule, one exception being the Italian occupation of 1936-41. In 1974 a military junta, the Derg, deposed Emperor Haile SALASSIE (who had ruled since 1930) and established a socialist state. Torn by bloody coups, uprisings, wide-scale drought, and massive refugee problems, the regime was finally toppled by a coalition of rebel forces, the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), in 1991. A constitution was adopted in 1994 and Ethiopia's first multiparty elections were held in 1995. A border war with Eritrea that erupted in May 1998 has strengthened the ruling coalition, but has hurt the nation's economy. Geography [Top of Page] Location: Eastern Africa, west of Somalia

In the Wollo region of Ethiopia there are high plateaus and canyons. Ethiopia is bordered by Sudan to the west, Somalia and Djibouti to the east, Eritrea to the north, and Kenya to the south. But fertile soil in the lowlands means that wheat can be grown. Ethiopia has huge variations in its climate from the hot, tropical Kolla valleys to the cool, rainy Dega highlands where grain is grown and cattle graze. The Ogaden semi-desert plain is dry and bare, and the low-lying Danakil Depression is one of the hottest, driest places on earth. Location
Ethiopia is located in north eastern part of Africa, what is sometimes referred to as the "Horn of Africa." It is bordered by Eritrea in the north (912 km), Kenya in the South (830 km), Djibouti and Somalia in the east (337 km and 1,626 km respectively), and the Sudan in the west (1,606 km). [See map above]
Size
Ethiopia is a country with a total area of 1,127,127 square km, of which 7,444 square km is water bodies. Comparatively, Ethiopia is slightly less than twice the size of Texas, USA or Britain and France put together.
Coastline
With the independence of Eritrea on the 27th of April 1993, Ethiopia became a landlocked country. It has no coastline and has no maritime claims. [See map above]
Topography
The Ethiopian topography is best expressed as a complex blend of massive highlands, highly rugged terrain, and remarkable valleys divided by the Great Rift Valley running from southwest to northeast surrounded by lowlands, steppes, and semi-desert. This great terrain diversity is responsible for wide variations in climate, soil, natural vegetation, and settlement pattern. The highest point in Ethiopia is Ras Dashen at 4,620m (15,157ft) and the lowest point is Denakil at 125m (410ft) below sea level.

History Part I The Land and Its People Her geography is unique. Covering well over a million square kilometers, Ethiopia is about twice as large as Kenya or Texas, or about five times as large as the United Kingdom. Its magnificent landscape ranges from desert areas to forested highlands. At 4,620 meters, Mount Ras Deshen is Ethiopia's highest peak, and Africa's fourth highest, but twenty mountains rise to more than 4,000 meters. The waters of the Abay River, or Blue Nile, feed Lake Tana and flow into the Nile. Most of the Nile's waters originate in Ethiopia. Ethiopia is generally considered Africa's oldest continuously identifiable nation, though Egypt's written history is older and more complete. Ethiopia is landlocked today. Eritrea (independent since 1993), Djibouti and parts of Somalia, share much of their ancient, medieval and modern histories with Abyssinia, as Ethiopia was formerly known. Yemen is nearby. Across the Red Sea is the mountainous Asir Province of Saudi Arabia. Asir, which lies in Asia, has a rugged topography not unlike that of Ethiopia's uplands, and Ethiopians are one of the province's larger ethnic minorities. In times past, Ethiopia bordered Egypt, encompassing parts of what is now Sudan.
