    The General History Major
Choosing the General History Major allows students to complete coursework in both a broad range of study and a particular subject area. The General Major requires that the 12 courses (or more) taken in History satisfy the following 2 requirements in addition to those listed on the preceding pages for all pathways to the A.B. With careful planning, all these requirements can be satisfied by taking only 12 courses in History. Breadth (6-8 courses) - To ensure geographical breadth, at least two courses must be completed in each of three geographical fields: Field I (Africa, Asia, and Middle East); Field II (the Americas); and Field III (Europe, including Western Europe, Eastern Europe, and Russia). To ensure chronological breadth, 2 courses must also be completed in a "premodern" period (Field IV: before 1700). Any given course may be counted for both Fields I-III and the premodern period. Concentration (4 courses) To develop a measure of expertise, students must complete four courses (including one colloquium or research seminar) in a single area. The proposed concentration must be approved by the major advisor; a proposal for a thematic concentration must have the approval of both the advisor and the department's Director of Undergraduate Studies. One's faculty advisor does not need to be a specialist in the area of one's concentration.

Guide Picks - Top 5 Books: General Histories While many 'history books' focus on a limited area, such as the Vietnam War, other texts examine far broader subjects and there are plenty of volumes narrating Europe's past from prehistory until today. While lacking in detail, these books provide valuable insights into long-term development, while avoiding the, often nation-centric, interpretations of shorter studies. Europe: A History by Norman Davies
This large tome, which registers well over a thousand pages, explains the history of Europe from the ice-age until the late 1990's, in an easily read and wholly entertaining style. A large appendix, containing maps and charts of information, creates a useful reference source. This best-selling work has been criticised for a bias towards Poland, but this simply corrects a deficiency in the genre. Read Review The Penguin History of Europe by J. M. Roberts

This 5 page report discusses one of humanity’s great mythic questions in reference to various human belief systems and their interpretation of the divine. When the Christian mindset of the West, both Catholic and Protestant came in contact with the spiritual beliefs of Eastern traditions, it determined that it had a moral duty to save the people of other cultures and other beliefs from themselves. Different populations pursuing their own truth and existing within humanity’s search for meaning have repeatedly disallowed for differences in interpretation of meaning by other groups and asserted the need for others to believe as they do. You are here: Classroom Grade 11 History General History ... The National State in Central Europe : 1. Introduction Other units in this lesson: 2. History of German States 3. Bismarck 4. Franco-Prussian War Introduction: This section is an introduction to the theme "The Unification of Germany". It is a brief overview of the organisation of the German states from the time of the Holy Roman Empire, through the rule of the French dictator Napoleon Bonaparte. We see how the Congress of Vienna in 1815 re-arranged the states and how the liberal revolts in the 1830s in Europe led to the German people's desire for a say in their government. It is an important backdrop to Germany's unification because if we do not know in what form the German states existed before unification, we have nothing to compare a united Germany with. We also see the dominant role which Austria played in the Bund, and it becomes obvious that unification of Germany would not occur constitutionally (Austria will not allow this) i.e through laws , but through war. In the next section we will look at specific factors which lead to German unification eg. economic union in the form of the Zollverein. The appointment of Otto von Bismarck, the role he played and his importance will be examined as well.
