International trade is one of the major policy areas in which the European Commission has extensive executive powers and is a key focus of GPC's Brussels practice. Through our capability across Europe and in North America, GPC develops and implements strategies that combine a global perspective on the international trade agenda, with local insight into domestic political considerations. This unique combination has enabled our consultants to provide valuable help to a range of clients seeking to advance their international trade interests in the EU. Our successes in recent years have included:
  • developing and implementing a successful campaign to persuade the Commission to eliminate an import quota, thereby enabling the member companies of a non-European industry association to increase their exports to the EU by millions of dollars annually
  • gaining European Commission agreement to convince non-EU country to remove an environmental trade barrier that unfairly targeted a material produced by a GPC client

INTERNATIONAL TRADE INTERNSHIPS IN EASTERN EUROPE
International Trade Minister Sergio Marchi announced today a contribution of $300 000 to the University of Toronto's Centre for Russian and East European Studies to implement 20 internships as part of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade's Youth International Internship Program. The Centre for Russian and East European Studies will offer internships with private sector and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Private sector internships will focus on market research, business development and administrative support. NGO placements will provide experience in journalism, media relations, minority rights and freedom of the press. These opportunities are aimed at candidates with backgrounds in business administration, liberal arts or social sciences and with some knowledge of the relevant languages. " Canada's future lies in closer relations with our international trading partners. Preparing young Canadians to compete in this increasingly globalized marketplace as workers or as entrepreneurs is a fundamental part of our government's human resource strategy," said Minister Marchi. " The Centre for Russian and East European Studies' project is an excellent example of how we can work with other sectors to ensure young Canadians develop the international trade skills that they need and that employers want. It is also an excellent example of the importance of blending social and economic issues."

  • to strengthen Canada's presence in the booming Russian market by raising the profile of Canadian companies; and to expand Canada's already productive commercial and investment relations with Germanythe richest economy in Europe and the world's leading exporter.
New optimism in Russia The increasingly open Russian economy is in full expansion. The country is at last making the transition to a market economy; with demand rapidly growing for a wider range of products and services, new outlets and opportunities are emerging. There is also renewed optimism in the business community that the progress will continue. In 2000, Canada's two-way trade with Russia reached nearly $870 million. Canadian exports to Russia have risen steadily since 1999, and they climbed sharply in 2001. Excellent business prospects exist in many sectors, particularly oil and gas, agri-food, energy, mining, construction, transportation, information and communications technologies, and educational services.

US threatens sanctions against Europe and steel exporters
International trade tensions grow
By Jerry White 14 November 1998 Relations between the US and its major trading partners are rapidly deteriorating in an atmosphere of mutual recriminations and the danger of the outbreak of trade war. In the past few days the Clinton administration has warned that it will impose tariffs on European goods if regulations are not lifted on US banana exports, and threatened action against Japan, Russia and Brazil for "dumping" low-cost steel in the American market. Last weekend during a conference of US and European business leaders and trade officials held in Charlotte, North Carolina, Vice President Al Gore, Commerce Secretary William Daley and Deputy Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers accused the European Union of shirking responsibility for easing the world economic crisis by not doing enough to boost growth and open its market to imports from Asia. Daley warned that if Europe did not share more of the burden, "this year's global financial crisis would become next year's global trade crisis." On Tuesday US Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky threatened to place 100 percent tariffs on wine, cheese and other imports from Europe if the EU did not lift trade restrictions on bananas sold by American companies. Chiquita Brands International and the Dole Food Company have long complained that they are unfairly restrained from selling Latin American-grown bananas in Europe. The 100 percent tariffs would go into effect February 1.
