There is a long tradition of collaboration and exchange of information between archaeologists in Europe, but until the last few years this has been largely uncoordinated. Now, with the disappearance of many of the political obstacles of the past fifty years, archaeologists can move andwork freely, all over Europe. At the same time, the increasing threats to Europe's rich archaeological heritage, the growth and diversification of the subject, and recent political changes combine to present a unique opportunity for the profession to develop a new, integrated European archaeology, based upon existing national and regional traditions.
Who are the members? The EAA is a membership-based association open to all archaeologists and other related or interested individuals or bodies. The EAA currently has over 1100 members on its database from 41 countries world-wide working in prehistory, classical, medieval and later archaeology. They include academics, aerial archaeologists, environmental archaeologists, field archaeologists, heritage managers, historians, museum curators, researchers, scientists, teachers, conservators, underwater archaeologists and students of archaeology.

    About the Journal
The European Journal of Archaeology seeks to promote open debate amongst archaeologists committed to a new idea of Europe in which there is more communication across national frontiers and more interest in interpretation. Covering all time periods, the journal includes not only new empirical data and new interpretations of the past but also encourages debate about the role archaeology plays in society, how it should be organized in a changing Europe, and the ethics of archaeological practice.

Where to look on the Web for information on archaeology beyond the British Isles I. General Guides to Archaeology on the Internet
    • ARCHNET A guide to archaeological/anthropological/museum resources on the Web anywhere in the world. This is the ultimate 'list of lists' which is probably ultimately linked to everything, anywhere, remotely linked to archaeology. You can type in a keyword, or choose a category: regions, subject areas, academic departments, museums, journals and publishers, software. 'Subject Areas' is particularly useful, leading to lists of links related to ceramics, botany, mapping/GIS, and rock art, to name but a few categories. Anthropology Resources on the Internet . Originally known as Allen Lutins' List, this sorts links of anthropological and archaeological interest into similar categories to ArchNet. The Worldwide Email Directory of Anthropologists (WEDA) . A list of people rather than websites, it isn't limited to anthropologists but includes many archaeologists, both professional and avocational. Students are also welcome. The opening page consists of a search form. You can search for a name (or part of a name), institution, geographical region or research interest. I tried two searches: 'Ireland' produced two anthropology departments in Irish universities, an archaeologist, a heritage company and a person of unknown status; 'megalithic' produced a German museum, an American company, a Swedish university and a Spanish museum.

    Human Origins
This course is an introduction to the evolutionary development of humans, both physically and culturally. Major topics include the concept of evolution, biological relationships between humans and other primates, primate behavior and taxonomy, the fossil record of human evolution, and the basic methods employed by archaeologists in the study of prehistoric human biological and cultural development. The course focus is on paleoanthropology, the science which combines fossil and cultural evidence of human evolution.
The Celtic World The Celtic-speaking peoples of continental Europe and the British Isles have left us a rich archaeological, historical and mythological record. During the pre-Roman Iron Age the remains of their settlements and burial grounds can be found from Spain to the Black Sea. This course will trace the archaeological beginnings of the Celtic tradition from its late Neolithic/early Bronze Age roots to the western-most outposts of the Celtic world in the British Isles. We will explore this legacy through the archaeological, historical and literary records, with reference to sites, monuments and written texts from the Mediterranean world and the British Isles. The course will also explore the historical and political construction of the concept of "the Celts", which has become the metaphor for the emerging and contested European community.

It should be stressed that Denmark, Finland and Norway could be easily included in the same projects and with about the same agenda. In the Scandinavian countries history production was from the Renaissance onwards related to the State and the dynasties. As political changes, mainly the effects of war, formed different territories, the regions belonged to different states at times, or were "lost forever". This resulted sometimes in the moving of parts of state archives, but not so much in the moving of objects. In the perspective of Sweden objects were mainly brought to Sweden, from military campains (e.g. whole libraries) on the continent or in Denmark. Later on, with a slowly developing archaeology, items from the Classical world were imported, both to private collections and to official exhibitions and museums. This is, however, more a question of art history than archaeology. During rather long periods there was a parallellism in the use of ancient history to demonstrate the superior age and supremacy of Denmark -Norway and Sweden, respectively.

    http://www.e-a-a.org/ltp.htm
The EAA Long-Term Plan 1999-2003 Introduction The European cultural heritage represents the collective memory of our ancestor's society and living conditions, in short, the framework for their existence. On the threshold of a new millennium the preservation of this cultural heritage remains one of our main challenges as archaeologists. We have a responsibility to provide future generations too, with the opportunity to experience and learn from the archaeological heritage. Towards the end of our century we are again witnessing in Europe the systematic destruction of cultural remains through warfare, political upheaval and internal national antagonism. Political decisions of many kinds, including those based on economic and social considerations, present a continued and escalating threat to archaeological remains and increase the need for protection. The EAA wishes to contribute to an active preservation of archaeological remains, through the continued development of standards, the discussion of preservation problems at our conferences and in our journals, as well as constructive influence in European institutions.
Development and challenges Since 1997, we have a professional secretariat that is established in London, capable of providing efficient service to the membership. The Annual Meetings have developed into a major event, averaging around 600 participants and providing an important forum for discussion at the European level. Information is also provided through a biannual newsletter (The European Archaeologist) that now appears regularly in a summer- and winter issue. Since January 1999, the EAA also has its own domain on the internet (http://www.e-a-a.org) which will add significantly to our ability to communicate. Finally, the Journal of European Archaeology, relaunched in 1998 as the European Journal of Archaeology in co-operation with Sage Publishers, apart from appearing regularly now, has developed into a well-established medium for scientific exchange. Electronic delivery of the Journal will be introduced in 2000.
