Two 90-minute blocks per week - first half of Term
Rationale
European culture has been and continues to be a significant force in the global society and in its influence on other cultures.
An understanding of recent developments in Euro-culture is valuable in determining the extent to which our view of the world and ourselves has been and is shaped by cultural currents emanating from Europe. Objectives
To introduce students to key themes in European culture in the 19th and 20th century and to give a bird's-eye view on major trends in art, architecture and film. Content
In the last 150 years intellectuals in Europe have tried to come to terms with a dominating sense of alienation and absurdity of life. The class will focus on analysis and interpretation of selected works from European culture since the middle of the 19th century - philosophy, painting, music, film and design. To which degree are these relics of the past living elements in our life today? Can we still find pleasure or gain knowledge from our ancestors' artistic attempt to describe or explain the basic questions of human existence? Method
Combination of lectures, group work and class discussion based on audio-visual material and 5-10 pages of readings for each class. Please note that all students will be expected to be active in class and make contributions.

Language is both a process and a product. For those of us in English studies, emphasis is sometimes given to text as a process rather than product, as well as sometimes emphasizing product over process. The 7th Annual Conference at the Peaks wishes to explore this reciprocating relationship through technology studies as well as the traditional modes of scholarship:

Course: Elective, 40 classroom hours, 5.5 ECTS points
Time: Autumn semester 2001/02, Wednesdays,13:00-15:15 (class times for 2002/03 will be set by 15 September 2002)
Venue: Lecture room, Rynek Glowny 34
Course Objectives:
The course is addressed to graduate students interested in contemporary Eastern European literature and culture. It is exclusively based on English translations and does not require a knowledge of the Polish language. The course analyses reciprocal relations between literature, sociology, politics and anthropology in order to present various self-portraits of the nations whose cultural identity has been endangered by their historical experience. Since Nazism and communism shook the traditional system of values, many people have been forced once again to ask themselves a question "Who am I?" This search for self-definition is particularly interesting in Eastern Europe as it has led some of its writers to try different artistic and philosophical approaches which elucidate the whole European cultural tradition from a new angle.
