FOREWORD
(PØEDMLUVA), CONTENTS (OBSAH) Covers the Territory of the Former Czechoslovakia, Including Bohemia, Moravia, Slovakia, and Subcarpathian Ruthenia. Compiled and Edited by Miloslav Rechcigl, Jr., Ph.D. Rockville, MD, USA, 1999 By Miloslav Rechcigl , Jr. and SVU 1703 Mark Lane, Rockville, MD 20852 Phone: (301) 881-7222; FAX: (301) 881-9667; e-mail: rechcigl@aol.com FOREWORD This is an aide to amateurs interested in Czechoslovak genealogy who have limited knowledge of computers. The reason for grouping Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia, Slovakia, and Subcarpathian Ruthenia together is quite simple. These ethnic groups lived together for more than a generation and intermariages took place among them. It is therefore logical to deal with them as one entitty. Whether we like it or not the computers are here to stay and sooner or later they will become the principal tools of genealogists. There is a lot of information on the Internet already but not everybody knows how to access it. Sometimes, it may take hours to locate a specific site unless one knows its address. For a beginner it is like looking for a needle in a haystack. If one is fortunate enough to locate a good resource page with numerous links, the immediate problem arises which of the links should one choose. Most pages list various links in a haphazard fashion, mixing apples with oranges, without any order or system. One has to then spend enormous amount of time opening each of these links to see whether any of them may be of some use.

Slovak Genealogy It can be argued that the yearning to connect with one's past inevitably possesses every human being at one point in their life. Whether it be an outlandish fantasy about a possible royal pedigree or just a superficial exploration of one's roots - inquisitiveness about our ancestors is universal. Questions dealing with genealogy almost always require tremendous amount of research and it is impossible for us to help with such specific requests. If you don't find the information you are looking for at this site, we probably don't have it. There are a multitude of genealogical resources on the web that are better equipped to deal with such questions and research. In most probability your endeavors will require to make trips to assess material first hand and which is not available on the internet. Consulting a certified, professional genealogist is an option we also recommend. Here is a set of links and addresses specifically dealing with Slovak Genealogy: Websites: Slovakia.ORG's Section on Slovak Americans

  • is a must for general genealogy information. Also has a section on Eastern European Genealogy.
  • The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)
  • has good on line general indexes to find microfilm rolls for censuses, immigration lists, etc. Plan on spending a lot of time navigating through the information to see what's available.
  • Family History Centers
  • You should try to rent microfilm through the Mormon Church (LDS) Family History Centers (FHC); service is good and inexpensive. Many of the records of the National Archives are obtainable through the LDS (rental only but at a lower cost and shorter waiting period). In addition the LDS has extensive holdings on microfilm of county, state vital records and newspaper archives. If you are looking for birth, marriage, and death records of ancestors your local Mormon Church Family History Center has an index on CD for church records for various towns in the Slovak Republic.

There is still much to be reviewed and added, so more changes are sure to follow....
