EAZA RAINFOREST CAMPAIGN 2002 The tiny tamarin is a small primate whose habitat is declining rapidly, leading to a perilous state of near-extinction for many of these animals. However, thanks to co-operation between zoos and conservationists in the wild, numbers have recovered in recent years. Marwell Zoo is supporting the Rainforest Campaign initiated by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA). During 2001 Marwell supported the important Bushmeat Campaign promoted by EAZA and contributed 25,000 signatures to a petition that could have considerable influence on efforts to save endangered African wildlife. Over recent years European zoos have played an important role. They have participated in the scientifically-managed breeding programmes for three species of the critically threatened lion tamarin. Marwell has the golden lion tamarin and the golden-headed lion tamarin. During 2002 the zoo will actively raise funds to adopt a group of golden lion tamarins in the wild. More news? -

Bison Newsletter Home A day of joy - I wish I had reason to say content - the day I surfed into the home page of the Carpathian Ecoregion Initiativ: www.carpathians.org/part_info.htm Finally society seems to have decided to safeguard the future existence of the mighty European herbivor and use whatever suitable habitat in and around the Carpathian region that can be made available. Ecoregion Initiative held a summit meeting in April in Bucharest. Reported to attend was Prince Philip and 7 Heads of state. Further 9 countries represented by high officials had been signed in for the meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to agree on a resolution to set up plans for protection of some 210 000 square km in the Carpathian region, with Romania and Slovakia having the main contribution. The project Ecoregion Initiative is run through the Vienna WWF office. It seems plausible to accept that the aerea big enough to house a free-ranging herd of European Bison, big enough to be left to live their own life without genetic damages. Thus I admit having been too pessimistic as to the possibilities of finding space enough.

Modern zoos can trace their genealogy back a very long way. Ancient monarchs maintained grand collections of live exotic animals for purposes of private entertainment and public display, and their humble subjects could admire similar specimens in sideshow displays or in pitched arena combats. As this range of viewing opportunities suggests, some branches of this large and venerable family tree have always been more dignified than others. Medieval and early modern Europe offered a similar spectrum of proto-zoos, from the private menageries of kings and wealthy aristocrats to the street performances and tavern displays of mangy individual specimens. In Animal Attractions Using a wealth of examples, in which the experiences of the National Zoo in Washington, the Bronx Zoo and the Philadelphia Zoo figure with particular prominence, Hanson also discusses the development of modern standards of wild animal husbandry, changing fashions in zoo architecture and the often brutal and wasteful process by which the market for wild animals was supplied. Although she is primarily concerned with the development of zoos as institutions, she also describes some very interesting characters, such as animal collector and self-publicist Frank Buck and taxidermist-turned-zoo-director William Hornaday.

However the most useful aspect of the site, from a wild cat research perspective, is the Campaigns category. Specifically, the Tiger Campaign contains a list of Target Projects for wild tiger conservation. Each project description has photos and a high level overview of the work to be done.
