  • Integrating Technology in the Elementary Classroom
So, your school has invested in technology and now you either have a new lab or new computers in your classroom. Maybe you've just gotten the Internet into your school. And now you're expected to use it! Great! Just one more thing we have to teach! Is the time, effort, and money really worth it? Do I believe that this will help my students become more successful learners?
    Top of Page
    Scavenger Hunts
These links are included as examples of the kinds of scavenger hunts teachers can create to reflect the program being taught in their classrooms. Some can be used as presented. Some can be modified to suit particular needs. Some are quite good. Others probably reflect early attempts at using this idea.
  • Animals Internet Scavenger Hunt
Where in the world do some animals live? Celebrate National Zoo and Aquarium Month by sending your students on an Internet scavenger hunt! They'll learn about the natural habitats of ten of the world's animals including some animals they've never heard of! Two versions! One for beginners and one for experienced surfers.
  • Internet Scavenger Hunt: Especially For Kids Have you ever been on a scavenger hunt? Here is your chance to find some real treasures of the Internet! Visit the Web sites below to answer the questions, and keep track of the treasures that you find.

    Introduction Task Process ... Conclusion
Introduction Thirty foot monsters, untamed seas, unknown lands, strange peoples, gold, riches. What awaits the ancient explorer on his journey? Throughout this quest, you will become familiar with the life of an explorer, his dreams, his life at sea, his accomplishments, and his effect on the new found land. Task
Your task is to take the identity of an European explorer as he searches the unknown world. You will be writing a proposal for your quest, keeping a journal of your experiences, and creating a map of your voyage. Upon your return, you will be informing your sponsors of your amazing journey, sharing your experiences with them. Process 1. Choose an explorer from the Explorer List 2. From the explorer's point of view, you will need to write a proposal to the governing authority for your quest. Your proposal should contain:
    • Where you are going, the route you will take, what you wish to accomplish in your voyage Why it is beneficial for them to sponsor you (What's in it for them?)

Students and teachers will find curricular resources (information, content...) to help them learn about this topic. In addition, there are also links to instructional materials (lesson plans) which will help teachers provide instruction in this theme. Please read our 1492: An Ongoing Voyage
This virtual exhibit from the US Library of Congress addresses the following questions: What was life like in the Western Hemisphere and the Mediterranean before 1492? What spurred European expansion? How did European, African and American peoples react to each other? What were some of the immediate results of these contacts? The exhibit also examines the first sustained contacts between American people and European explorers, conquerors and settlers from 1492 to 1600.
[An] Adventure to the New World
Intermediate students use the Internet to complete an Explorer's Notebook in a simulated voyage to find the North West Passage. This is a two - three week Language Arts and Social Studies unit.

Resources for the Study of the Age of Exploration
There are a number of very good sources of online information regarding the Age of Exploration. An outstanding multimedia project, The European Voyages of Exploration , has been put together by the Applied History Research Group at the University of Calgary. For the student interested in general survey accounts the 1492 Exhibit is quite good. Andre Engels' Discoverers Web contains hundreds of links to further information and is an excellent place to start looking for hints to further online research. His page on primary sources is as outstanding as it is thorough. Richard Hooker has written a fine section of his general survey of western civilization called Discovery The Beginnings , and the Mariners' Museum at Newport News, Virginia, is excellent as well. On Columbus, check out Columbus and the Age of Discovery from Millersville University (Pennsylvania) and Keith A. Pickering's Columbus Navigation Home Page . Andre Engels has collected an extensive list of links on Christophorus Columbus . You can also read Dinesh D'Souza's 1995 article "The Crimes of Christopher Columbus."
