    Early Explorers
Today, if we wanted to go exploring in the woods, or in a cave, or up a river in the mountains, we could probably run out to an auto club or go to the Internet and find information. But what did the early explorers do before maps were so readily available? How did they know how long it would take to get somewhere? What tools would they have used to help plot their course? And who were these people and what made them want to chart out new territory? The resources below help in solving answers to these and other questions.

    European Explorers
    http://www.civilisations.ca/vmnf/reper/r-ch1-en.htm

Seeking the shortest navigation route towards China and the Indies, Europe happened upon an unknown continent: America, the New World. Includes a timeline of explorations. You can tour this site in chronological order, or you can also click on a date to jump to the corresponding page.
    The Explorers
    http://www.civilisations.ca/vmnf/explor/explcd_e.html
The exploration of North America starts long before the arrival of the colonists. Using this theme, the ancient continent is discovered coming to grips with famine, epidemics and wars, which stimulate migratory flow. The seaports of France are left behind for moorings in the bays of the Saint Lawrence valley and access to a New World. The growth of business and the establishment of a new world were founded on the activities of the explorers. Thanks to the chain of trading posts set up on the explorers' trails, they drew the ever-growing outline of New France.
