Many of these maps reflect the European Age of Discoveries, dating from the late 15th century to the 17th century when Europeans were concerned primarily with determining the outline of the continents as they explored and mapped the coastal areas and the major waterways. Explore the Explorers Online!
Columbus and the other early explorers provide your students with the opportunity to explore new worlds as well as worlds of knowledge and discovery! This week, Education World delivers a shipload of sites and activities guaranteed to keep your lessons afloat and your curriculum current. Editor's note: For additional "explorer" resources, be sure to check out this week's CURRICULUM story, Across the Sea: Europeans Explore the New World Students, perhaps distracted by the October 12 school holiday, often forget that Christopher Columbus wasn't the only explorer who sailed into uncharted seas to find an unknown land. They may not even realize that he wasn't even the first of those adventurers to set foot in the New World. Historians believe Leif Erikson, an Icelander, was the first European to arrive in North America, landing in what is now Canada in 1001.
Then why is Columbus so widely-known and celebrated and Erikson so often ignored or forgotten? Pose the question before you begin exploring "Explorer" Web sites. Students should be able to answer that question and many more at the end of their online voyages.

Lessons of the Explorers!
What kinds of people choose a life of exploration, adventure, and danger and where would we be without them? Your students will answer those questions as they investigate explorers and determine their impact on our world. Included: Eleven simple and successful classroom activities and two activities for families to share. Which Europeans explored Trinidad? Newfoundland? the Cape of Good Hope? Texas? Those questions are probably easy enough for your students to answer or to find the answers to. But once they have the facts, can they answer the more difficult and important questions: Who were the explorers really? What drove them? What sustained them? What impact did they have on our lives? They'll know the answers if their explorations have led them to Explorers of the World , a Web site that emphasizes the use of knowledge instead of just the knowledge itself.

From Kirkus Reviews , December 15, 1991
The author of more than 40 nonfiction books for young adults focuses on the busy period of political and commercial interchange between Asia and Europe from 1245 to 1433 A.D. Beginning with Marco Polo's famous meeting with Kublai Khan, Stefoff summarizes the growth of the Mongolian Empire and the increasing contact with Europe that began in the fourth century B.C. The oft-told but still fascinating story of the Polos is followed by a final chapterset in the period just before the Columbus eraabout two lesser-known explorers, Ibn Battuta of Morocco and Cheng Ho of China. The author's steady stream of concentrated information is well complemented by period illustrations, including a color insert, with informative captions. The sheer interest of the material here will reward those diligent enough to pursue it. Map; bibliography; chronology; index. (Nonfiction. 14+) From Horn Book
The explorers and their achievements are placed into historical context in this well-written, well-researched series, while the many illustrations, maps, and color plates make the books inviting. Followers of the series may be growing tired of the identical Michael Collins introductory essay which appears in every volume. Bib., ind.

An Adventure to the New World Instructions from the King and Queen You, as an agent for the King and Queen, are hereby authorized to make a journey to the New World on behalf of our kingdom. All of our rivals are competing for land, trade and wealth. Whoever wins will be the strongest kingdom in Europe. It is imperative that you succeed. Your mission is to claim all land for the monarchy, locate a new trading route across the ocean, look for the Northwest Passage, and bring back gold, silver, metals, spices, new plants, and any items deemed valuable. You will be provided with a ship, crew, and all the necessary provisions for an extensive journey to the New World. Certain precise requirements must be met if you expect to be rewarded for your achievements. In order to fulfill your contract you will make an Explorer's Notebook consisting of the attached items. Good luck on your journey and Godspeed. The Monarchy THE TASK You must complete the journey and return with evidence of your findings in the new land. Create an "Explorer's Notebook" for your journey. It should include:

    CARTHAGINIANS IN THE NEW WORLD
    A RADICAL THEORY (c) 1999, 2002 Roy A Decker
Evidence of ancient explorers traveling to the new world does exist, and more than a single anomaly. The Biblical Clues:
Able Seamen: *Herodotus also notes that the feat of circumnavigation of Africa was soon duplicated by the Carthaginians. Phoenician sailors set out from their homeland on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean to trade, explore and to found colonies. They had competition from the Greeks, but managed to set colonies on most of the islands in the Mediterranean, along the north coast of Africa (including one named Carthago, Carchedon to the Greeks, or Carthage - from the punic Qart-Hadasht meaning "New Town") and along the coast of Spain (then called Iberia by the Greeks). They built small trading settlements through the Sahara desert and scattered through the middle east. They were able to navigate by the stars, unlike their Greek and Roman counterparts who without any compass were forced to sail within sight of land at all times.
The New Town When Alexander completed his conquest, Carthage sent letters of congratulations and gifts - although fortunately for them Alexander didn't turn his attention to them. Alexander was apparently planning on an expedition against Carthage and Italy, but died of a fever before completing his preparations. The question of whether or not he could have been successful is moot, however it would have been a different sort of war than the Persian conquest. Carthage would not likely collapse after a defeat or two, Alexander was short on manpower (he was forced to reorganize his phalanxes with only the front three ranks being Macedonians, the remainder Persian and other levees) and how the naval conflict would resolve is unknown. Rome and Carthage were allied at this time, and the Romans were fond of saying that if Alexander had gone west instead of east he would not be known as "The Great".

What We Do and Why We Do It At World Wide Explorers we run missions and wilderness trips with students from all over the country. We have sites that are designed just for students. The sites offer a combination of challenge, adventure and ministry opportunities. One word that would best describe World Wide Explorers is challenge. All of our trips are based on challenging students, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Make no mistake - World Wide Explorers is not for everybody. We are not about the site you will visit. We are about challenging you and to be all that God created you to be. We started World Wide Explorers with the idea of developing students into Leaders. We know that there are a lot of organizations out there offering missions trips for students but we wanted to create one that would be intentional in training student leaders. We want to challenge students to do more, work harder, and develop perseverance. We provide opportunities to students in real leadership experiences that will help them be better leaders for the Kingdom of God. What Makes World Wide Explorers Unique 1. Challenging Trips:

STANFORD, Calif. The way to kick-start a humans-to-Mars program is to take a do-it-yourself approach and focus on research needed to open the Red Planet to explorers and eventually settlers, a guru for Mars exploration says. Private monies are being spent to study how to combat the long-duration effects on mice and humans of microgravity en route to Mars, and to better assess the skills required of people that voyage that great distance to open up the next "New World" for humankind, says Mars Society President, Robert Zubrin.
