Explorers of the New World Leif Ericson
Around the year 982 Eric the Red sailed to Iceland. He landed on the coast of Greenland. He founded the first colony there. His son named Leif Ericson began exploring the area. He reached the North American mainland around the year 1000 and called it Vinland. Later archaeologists uncovered the remains of his settlement at the extreme northern tip of Newfoundland. In 1965 a map dated from around 1440 was found. This Viking map showed parts of northeastern Canada. Back to Chart Marco Polo
Marco Polo and his two uncles visited Cathay, later called China. They lived at the court of the Emperor. When he went back to Italy, Polo wrote a book about this travels in the Far East. After the invention of Gutenburg's Printing Press in the year 1436 this book became one of the first to be published. Men became fascinated by Polo's descriptions of the Orient. Men began searching for sea routes to China, Japan, and the East Indies. Some of these men believed that the sea to the east of China and India was the same sea that was west of Europe. One map maker named Paolo Toscanelli even drew a map showing Europe with the Indies to the west rather than the east. Back to Chart Prince Henry
Prince Henry spent his entire fortune funding many voyages of exploration as well as projects in navigation, ship design, astronomy, and mapmaking

New World Disorder
A Review of Explorers of the New World
John Butterfield Explorers of the New World, a feature-laden if one-sided exploration of the European journeys through North and South America, promises a multimedia investigation of the travels, findings and impact of age of discovery. It's said that history is written by the winners. So is this CD-ROM. That's its biggest problem. Because in this case the winners annihilated cultures while they amassed credits in the history books. Explorers of the New World makes a token effort to acknowledge the devastation, but effort is so timid and shallow that it ends up more insulting than illuminating. A more balanced portrayal not only would have been more historically accurate; it also would have added drama and intensity to what should be a sweeping tale of adventure, tragedy, greed, envy and courage. Instead, we get short, shallow McNuggets of information, gussied up with technological bells and whistles. Technically impressive bells and whistles, though. Future Vision Multimedia incorporates a well-thought-out, well-illustrated interface to introduce viewers to the adventurers who ransacked and reconnoitered the Americas from 1492 to the early 1600s. After an introduction touting the excitement and adventure to follow (mercifully skippable on return visits), the viewer finds a landscape peopled with costumed figures, and a few standard navigation tools: a compass (onscreen through all scenes) to jump from section to section; a timeline; a searchable database of explorers; a guided tour(nicely done) to explain maneuvering through the disk; and "Impact" a look at how items from Europe (cattle, smallpox) affected the Americas and (coffee, turkeys) vice versa.

White Explorers

European explorers shared some of the reasons for travelling round Africa with Muslim fellow travelers, but had others peculiar to the time. They went in search of:
fame and celebrity, and
people to convert to Christianity
POWER AND KNOWLEDGE
European travelers hugely increased a general understanding of geography, climate and resources. Some accounts of the people were objective (as far as an outsider can be objective), others were willfully misleading. All the information these travelers brought back - wrong and right - contributed to devising an imperial strategy for controlling Africa.
SOURCES OF RIVERS
For Europeans the golden age of travelling was the early 19th century. The first half of the century was dominated by a desire to establish the sources of two of African's great trading arteries, the Niger and the Nile respectively.
The sort of men who undertook journeys across regions which were unknown to Europe were in the main strong willed, eccentric, sometimes cruel and prejudiced.

Black Explorers

At its widest point, from West to East Africa is 4,600 miles wide (7,400 km) and 5,000 miles long from North to South (8,000 km). The North of Africa, or the Maghreb as it is known in Arabic, is separated off from the rest of the continent by desert which forms a band some 3,000 miles (4,830 km) across the northern part of the continent. Throughout history the people of Africa have made immense journeys. Some were one-way journeys involving the complete relocation of a society.
There were three main reasons for making these long and dangerous journeys:
Trade
Famine and climate change, and
War
GROWING RICH WITH SLAVERY
For thousands of years merchants made the trip across the Sahara, taking gold and slaves from the interior of West Africa up to the North and bringing back textiles and finished goods, later guns.
The journey could take three months with temperatures as high as 135 degrees Fahrenheit, falling to freezing point at night. It was a test of endurance for merchants, camels and slaves alike. A typical caravan in the 19th century would not have been much different from one of the 11th century, comprising about 1400 camels and four hundred merchants and slaves.
"The camels walked slowly and with effort for they were almost exhausted…The sight of this numerous caravan, destitute of water, scattered over the arid land, was truly dismal…the plain was interspersed with hills of coarse red sand mixed with gravel…The heat was stifling…The allowance of water was every time more and more scanty. We suffered beyond all expression."

The site has been untouched for 500 years
A team of explorers has discovered the ruins of a "lost city" in Peru, hidden in a remote mountain jungle and untouched for more than 500 years. Called Cota Coca, the ruins are in south-east Peru, about 50 kilometres southwest of the well-known Inca site of Machu Picchu in the Andes. Thomson (l) and Ziegler plan to return to the area
British writer and explorer Hugh Thomson said the site, more of a settlement than what we would understand as a city, was in a "remarkable state of preservation". Mr Thomson, a co-leader of the expedition, said: "You're only going to find a new Inca site once in your life." Britain's Royal Geographical Society says Cota Coca's "constructed area" is more than twice as large as any found at the other Incan ruin whose discovery was announced just a few months ago. Thirty buildings The ruins include about 30 stone buildings around a central plaza. One structure, believed to be a large meeting hall or barracks, measures longer than 20 metres.

http://www.plainfield.k12.in.us/hschool/webq/webq168/
Explorers of the New World: A webQUEST of discovery Introduction Task Process Resources ... Evaluation Introduction Explorers from every era have braved the unknown to discover new lands. Religious fervor, greed, trade, empire building, and a thirst for knowledge have all played parts in the motivation of these explorers and the countries who sponsored them. The world we know today has been shaped by their adventures and continues to be expanded by those continuing the quest for new discovery. As important as these explorers have been and continue to be in the world's history, they are largely forgotten outside the classroom. In today's modern age we travel without a thought across vast oceans which once posed seemingly impenetrable barriers to the known world. TOP Task Congratulations! You have been given the opportunity to nominate an explorer for the latest series of trading cards by Top Cards . Working alone or in a group, you will search various resources to find information on an explorer of your choice. Once you have gathered your information, you will create a trading card for that explorer to submit to Top Cards, and a persuasive essay to convince them of your explorer's worthiness. Only 15 explorers will be chosen for the first pack of cards to be produced, so be convincing! TOP Process
  • If you are working alone, choose an explorer you wish to nominate, and narrow down his achievements to a particular voyage you wish to highlight. If you are working in a group, choose an explorer for the group to nominate, and each person in the group should choose a different voyage from that explorer to present in card form. If your group has more people than the explorer has voyages, you may pair up to create your cards.
