Threatened and Endangered Species ACTIVITY #3 ENDANGERD SPECIES AND THE CASE OF THE SHRINKING HABITAT Background

National parks and wilderness areas regulate development within their boundaries. But despite this protection, the mammals and birds within the park may not be fully protected from extinction. Wildlife will migrate or travel to wherever they need to in order to locate enough food, water, shelter, and space to survive. For example, animals that are not adapted to surviving the cold (hibernating, growing thick fur) migrate from the winter cold to warmer climates. When wildlife wander beyond the boundaries of protected land, they lose their protection too. Outside of North Cascades National Park Service Complex, many species are more vulnerable to the dangers presented by people. Procedure
Using the pieces of rope, make two large circles on the ground. Each circle should be big enough for the whole class to stand inside. Explain to the students that they will be acting like migrating birds in this game. One circle represents the birds' summer habitat while the other represents their winter habitat. The peregrine falcon and golden eagles migrate to points south. When you give the signal for the season to change by saying something like "it's fall (or spring) now," you are signaling the students to "fly" to the other circle. During the first round, which represents the first year of the game, there is no change in the size of their habitat. In the second year the habitat shrinks. To do this, you will need to make the circles smaller after each season. As the students are standing in the circle of their winter home, make their summer home smaller. While you do this, ask them what real life things could cause this to happen (development, resource extraction, pollution that makes the area uninhabitable).

Species that receive protection under the ESA are classified into two categories, "Endangered" or "Threatened," depending on their status (how many are left in the wild) and how severely their survival is threatened. A species that is listed as Endangered is in danger of becoming extinct throughout a significant portion of its habitat range (the areas where it lives). Threatened species are those that are likely to become Endangered in the foreseeable future. How does a species get "listed?" How are listed species protected? The Endangered Species Act outlines a number of protective measures that are designed to preserve species that have been listed as Endangered or Threatened. These measures include restrictions on hunting, transporting and trading (buying and selling) the species. Also, the USFWS is authorized to develop recovery plans for Endangered and Threatened species, which outline the steps that need to be taken for the species to recover and eventually be removed from the ESA. How many species are protected by the Endangered Species Act?

What Does Threatened And Endangered Mean? Endangered
means that a species may become extinct.
A species is endangered when the number if individuals (called the "population") of a plant or animal species has gotten so low that we're concerned that soon there will be no more of that species left in the world. Threatened means that the species may become endangered in the near future.
A species is called "threatened" when the population has gotten low enough that it soon may be hard for the adults in the species to produce enough offspring to get the population back to healthy numbers. What's a healthy population size? Large enough to survive normal threats to a population like a drought or being killed by natural predators. Lists of Species

Endangered species are plants or animals that will likely become extinct within the foreseeable future. Threatened means that a species may become endangered within the foreseeable future. In Texas, plants or animals may be protected under the authority of state law and/or under the Federal Endangered Species Act . Examples of federally listed species in north Texas are the black-capped vireo, golden-cheeked warbler Extinct and Extirpated are other terms associated with rare species. While extinct means that a species no longer exists anywhere on earth, like dinosaurs, extirpated describes an animal that has disappeared from a given area but still exists elsewhere. An example is the pronghorn antelope. The first settlers that arrived in North Texas described in their journals herds of pronghorns as far east as Fannin County. Pronghorns have since been extirpated from the northeastern portion of their range in Texas. They currently exist in Texas west of the 100th meridian and are numerous enough to be a game animal. What is being done to conserve our natural resources in North Central Texas? The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department administers a grant program called the

IUCN Red List Categories: The text below gives summary definitions of the categories in the new system. EXTINCT (EX)
A taxon is Extinct when there is no reasonable doubt that the last individual has died. A taxon is presumed
Extinct when exhaustive surveys in known and/or expected habitat, at appropriate times (diurnal, seasonal,
annual), throughout its historic range have failed to record an individual. Surveys should be over a time frame
appropriate to the taxon's life cycle and life form. EXTINCT IN THE WILD (EW)
A taxon is Extinct in the Wild when it is known only to survive in cultivation, in captivity or as a naturalized
population (or populations) well outside the past range. A taxon is presumed Extinct in the Wild when exhaustive

    Quotes:

"Europe, so hard on men in uniform and women and children civilians, was easy on its birds. Through 2,000 years of settlement involving the wholesale conversion of primeval forest to farmland and cities, not a single species of bird was documented as lost to extinction. Soldiers fell by the million, but the endemic birds of England and the continent endured.
Across the Atlantic, the story was different. "In North America, within 200 years," writes John K. Terres in his Encyclopedia of North American Birds , "largely because of the growth of the human population, early market hunting of some species, and destruction of the environment, this continent compiled the worst record of any comparable land mass in the world for exterminating its birdlife."" -Edward Kanze, "

Explanation These indicators assume that the environment degrades as the number of endangered and threatened species increases. The original indicators seek to calculate the number of endangered and threatened species, employing the categories of the Endangered Species Act. Funding constraints have in the past influenced the number of species that could be adequately surveyed to qualify for listing, e.g., 19 in 1990 and over 300 in 1998. The new indicators track both plant and native animal species from data listed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. These data are available from 1995 through 1997 and will apparently be gathered by the Environmental Council on a regular basis. These data provide highly differentiated categories of measurement from extinct to abundant for plants and from species of concern through extinct species for animals.
