DANVILLE - The 11th annual Danville Fall Crafts Festival brings 200 artists from around the country to downtown Danville on October 26 and 27 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The Alamo- Danville Artist Society and the Danville Fine Arts Gallery will provide instructors. The Craft Corner will be open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm both festival days.
At Prospect and Hartz Avenue you will find Scarecrow Alley, where artistically designed and embellished scarecrows will be showcased for both days. All are welcome to enter the Scarecrow Contest for the most funny, most scary, and most original. Winners will be selected on Sunday at 4:00 pm.

Valentine's Day Mardi Gras St. Patrick's Day ... Christmas Edible Scarecrow Candy Necklace
by Michelle Jones Scarecrows and pumpkins abound in the country this time of year. You can make this cute little scarecrow necklace by gluing candy to a raisin box and using a round piece of taffy for his head, would make a great class project too! Each scarecrow will need:
1 round piece of taffy, wrapped (head)
2 Tootsie rolls (arms)
2 rolls of Smarties or Spree candies (legs)
1/2 ounce box of raisins (body)
Low-temperature glue gun (Parents, remember to supervise children whenever using hot glue guns.)
Ruler
Scissors
Small piece of raffia or straw Glue body parts together using the raisin box as the body, legs attached to the bottom corners of the box, arms attached to the top sides, and the head to the top of the box lid. Measure and cut five 4" pieces of raffia and tie 4 of them together into a bunch by knotting the fifth piece around the center of the bundle. Glue knot to the top of the body (raisin box), at the base of the head. Making it look kind of like a bowtie. Trim the raffia if needed. Cut a long piece of raffia to make the necklace, being sure it will fit over the child's head. Glue the center of the strand to the back of the box and tie the ends together. Your edible necklace is ready!

Daily Egyptian Sharon Rickett knows what sells at the typical fall craft show, and it's usually as simple as a Santa Claus or a couple of turkeys. This year, though, she's been a bit surprised to find people still stuck in the beginning of July. But she's rushed to meet the demand, and it's created a different kind of feel in the character of her painted wooden decorations, a feel that nixes the usual holiday colors in favor of red, white and blue. She's been practicing her art for more than 20 years, and she has become accustomed to churning out the standard Christmas and Thanksgiving decorations, but this year is proving to be dramatically different from any other. After all, this is the year of Sept. 11. And if we've learned one thing from it, it's that red, white and blue are colors that don't run.

This project is fun and so impressive to the kids at Halloween. It's the same thing you've been doing for years, carving a jack-o-lantern, but this time you'll be doing it several more times! Just cut off the top of each pumpkin and remove the seeds. (Salted and toasted in a shallow pan in the oven, the seeds become an extra treat!) Draw a face on the pumpkin with the pencil and cut along your lines with the knife.
You will be building your totem pole on a metal fence post. Drive it into the ground up to the cross bar. Seven pumpkins will generally cover the full height of the post. Slide the pumpkins down the post one at a time. You may need to make a hole in the bottom of each pumpkin to make putting them on the fence post a bit easier. As the pumpkins are added, you might need to even the tops, so that the next pumpkin will sit level. Use the florists picks to add any extra pieces you wish. Beaks and ears, wings and horns can all be made from the parts of the pumpkin you carved out. As you add each pumpkin, put a couple of votive candles in each one. It may be difficult to do this after you have them on the fence post. You will need the long fireplace matches to help light the candles toward the top of the pole.

September, 1997 issue Fall Crafts Show at Lyndhurst The annual Fall Crafts Show at Lyndhurst promises improved facilities. A "super tent" will replace the two tents used previously and organizers anticipate that it will reduce aisle crowding, minimize muddy conditions in heavy rains and make the tented area larger, brighter, and cooler. Artrider Productions, which conducts the show, will experiment with a new high-tech flooring system to allow visitors to walk on the site without getting wet or muddy. There will also be a new covered ticket/information pavilion and redesigned fencing to "create a more efficient circulation pattern and shorter waits at ticket lines." The thirteenth Fall Craft Show will feature 342 crafts people from 34 states, who exhibit and sell one of a kind pieces in a wide range of styles, including jewelry, ceramics, hand-blown glass, fiber, wearable art, wood and leather. Besides the spectacular display of crafts outside and inside the "super tent," visitors may tour the historic mansion, listen to continuous live music and enjoy children's activities such as story-telling. There will be a special arts and crafts area where children may create their own masterpieces. Kraft Foods property, which is next door to Lyndhurst, will be available for visitor parking. A free shuttle bus system will bring visitors from various parking areas throughout Tarrytown to the ticket booth. Metro-North riders will also be picked up by a shuttle bus and brought to the site.
