TURKEY VULTURE FESTIVAL Turkey Vulture Fest Activities Vulture Facts Registration Form ... Accommodations The Kern River Valley Turkey Vulture Festival celebrates the height of fall Turkey Vulture migration through California's "Valley Wild", the Kern River Valley. One of the two largest known migration sites in North America (north of Mexico) - Thousands of Turkey Vultures were counted during 2001's 4-day festival. The entire 2001 count period from from September 1st through October 20th, tallied a total of over 20,000 Turkey Vultures. The magnitude of the migration over this southern Sierra Nevada count site is awe inspiring. ACTIVITIES - Our late September festival dates also correspond with what is historically one of the finest weekends for observing fall land bird migration in California. In addition to the presence of many western migrants attractive to eastern birders, there are excellent chances for observing eastern rarities at nearby desert oases. This year we offer Booths/Exhibits/Children’s Activities at the Kern River Preserve as well as field trips.

There are many contests throughout the 3-day festival; including outhouse races, bed races, frog jumping, turtle racing, marble shoots, hog calling, husband calling and many, many more. Over the years, Hootin and Hollarin has expanded to include parades, a queen pageant, a chilli cook-off, quilt show, and many booths where you can purchase local crafts such as wood carvings, paintingss, pottery, toys, needlecrafts, and food galore! There is something for everyone. Come join us for some Hootin an Hollarin fun!

The wet leaves compress into trash bags more efficiently or they can be added to a mulch pile. Since they are wet the wind won't blow them back all over the yard again. Saved me a lot of time this year. (Ernie Komarek - MilehiMall) WindChime (easy for young ones) Take a regular paper plate you can use craft beads, old buttons, magazine cut outs,or anything that you can get to stick on a paper plate. Have the kids color or paint the paper plates however they like. Then take the beads or whatever else you have found and glue them with Elmer's glue, glue stick or safe non toxic glue. Punch out 3 to 4 holes on the bottom of the paper plate. About 1/2 to 1 inch from the bottom. Get some yarn or string (about 3 feet)and loop it through and make a know and let the rest of the string hang. Make one last hole at the top of the paper plate and loop another piece of string or yarn about 1 to 3 feet. After everything is dried you can hang it from a hook or wherever else in your house you like and you now have a wind chime. (Sally) Magnets Pumpkin Patch (craft)

Why Do Leaves Change Color in the Fall?
Ever wonder why leaves change color every fall? Here's a simple scientific explanation:
Plants take water from the ground through their roots. They also take a gas called carbon dioxide from the air. Plants then use sunlight to turn the water and carbon dioxide into glucose, which is a kind of sugar that they can use for energy. This process is called photosynthesis. That means "putting together with light." A chemical called chlorophyll helps make photosynthesis happen. Chlorophyll is what gives plants their green color. As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter. This is how the trees "know" to begin getting ready for winter.
During winter, there is not enough light or water for photosynthesis. The trees will rest, and live off the food they stored during the summer. They begin to shut down their food-making factories. The green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves. As the bright green fades away, we begin to see yellow and orange colors. Small amounts of these colors have been in the leaves all along. We just can't see them in the summer, because they are covered up by the green chlorophyll.

    Fall Leaf Ideas
Gather together some leaves that have fallen from the trees. Make sure they are not real crispy, you should be able to bend and move them without them breaking up on you.
    You'll need:
    typing paper
    construction paper
    crayons
    white craft glue
    scissors
    leaves
Place the leaf down flat on a table. Then put a piece of typing paper over the leaf. With your crayon, color over the area where the leaf is laying. Press firmly with your crayon, but not too hard... you don't want to break your crayons! You can use one color if you like to... or you can use lots of pretty colors!
When the picture you've colored looks like a leaf... stop. What you've just done was made an impression of the leaf by using the texture of the leaf! You can do this with other objects... coins are fun too! Name Cards Fold your typing paper in half, then in half again. Put your leaf under the first layer ... then use your crayon to bring out the texture of the leaf. Now write the person's name on this card. When finished... put the name card on the dinner table... This will be perfect for those coming to Thanksgiving dinner! They will be able to know where to sit when it's time to eat! Thanksgiving Cards Fold a piece of typing paper in half, then fold it in half again. Put your leaf under the first layer... then use your crayon to bring out the texture of the leaf. Now write a greeting on the card. This makes wonderful gifts!
