Main Course: Love to Learn and Learn to Love
All my life, I have been trying to grow wiser without growing older. Though I have not been totally successful as (as my balding head will show), my spirit is still in its youth. That is sort-a what this website is about learning about things... all sorts of things... yet, remembering the love and trust we all need from Mother and Father. So, when you are traveling through this labyrinth of a website, please help our younger viewers understand what it is all about. To our older viewers: our studies show that the older you are, the harder it is to "get" this website. Maybe you can be learning from the youth at the same time? Thank you.
Some Example Study Paths
Notes: most of our study paths are not linear and may take time to grasp. All of our study paths are supposed to be interactive: you give us feedback, and we change the web. Since we never stop learning, this website never stops growing. And, please remember... we are trying to be fun :) So, we do tend to use humor. Besides, if you don't want to have fun, you should go home... hehehe... just kidding. If you need ideas on how to incorporate this website into a lesson plan for a specific age group, please

Parenting is important to you because your children matter. As a caring adult, you want to give your kids the best. So you strive to understand child development, child discipline and become a better parent. You work hard for your family and give them more than you had as a child. But have you ever asked yourself what you want from this relationship?
In your heart of hearts, if you imagined the best possible outcome for yourself, what would you foresee?
Would you feel fulfilled if your children grew up to honor, cherish and respect you?
Every parent would.
But how do you create this, especially if you don't enjoy a healthy relationship with your parents?
And how do you change the way you raise your kids, if you're flying blind and making it up as you go along?
Where did you learn how to raise kids anyway? Did you go to school and get a masters in child development?
Probably not. (And don't worry ... you don't need one.)
If you're like most of us, you learned child discipline from your parents, who learned from theirs.
While there's nothing wrong with this, especially if you had wise and loving role models, times have changed. Parenting strategies have evolved and our understanding of child development and child discipline has led us to become more insightful and humane.

Research and Analytic Skills

Building on a strong liberal arts foundation, students are required to take courses in research and analytic skills. The requirements include research methods (PAM 204), intermediate microeconomic theory (PAM 200), introduction to statistics, and multivariate statistics. These courses are designed to provide students with skills and competencies to enable them to undertake individual policy studies and, most important, to evaluate the validity of the plethora of policy studies that are used in both the public and private sector decision-making processes.

Policy Analysis and Management (PAM) Core Courses

At the heart of the PAM undergraduate curriculum are the core courses in the major. These courses include PAM 230 An Introduction to Policy Analysis which provides students with foundational concepts in policy analysis and exposes them to current issues related to family, consumer, and health policy. PAM 220 An Introduction to Non-Profit Management introduces students to the fundamentals of management theory as it applies to both public and private sector institutions. PAM 204 Applied Public Finance introduces students to the fundamentals of public sector taxation and expenditure policies. Building on these core courses, students are then required to take PAM 240 Critical Perspectives, a course in which policy issues are analyzed using group dynamics in a classroom setting.

September/October 1997 Teaching Teachers to Work with Families A new study by the Harvard Family Research Project recommends substantial changes in how teachers are trained and certified By Leon Lynn At the heart of any successful parent-involvement program are teachers who are not only committed to building family and school relationships, but who also have the skills and knowledge to do it well. To succeed, a teacher must be able to make good use of families' expertise and resources, at the same time reaching out to families to support them. All the while, the teacher must also meet the day-to-day challenges of the classroom. To succeed at building parent involvement, teachers need professional development experiences that prepare them for the task, just as they need preparation in subject matter and teaching skills. But a new study conducted by the Harvard Family Research Project , "New Skills for New Schools: Preparing Teachers for Family Involvement," finds that few education and certification programs for teachers address family involvement in substantial ways. Lack of Specifics Family Research Project researchers reviewed teacher-certification requirements for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Only 22 even mentioned family involvement. "And even when it was mentioned, often it wasn't defined in clear and precise terms," says Elena Lopez, the Family Research Project's associate director. Phrases such as "parent involvement," "home-school relations," and "working with parents" often appeared without any explanation or examples of what they meant, she says. "The conclusion was that these issues were not a high priority in state certification."

JULY 2002 / HIGHLIGHTS / BOTTOM LINE HOME SUBSCRIBE CONTACT COVER STORY ... RIO TINTO BORAX it’s a family affair When bloodlines alone rule the business, the first generation’s hard work might be lost. –Anthony Zecca Family businesses pay an estimated 65 percent of the wages in the United States and account for almost half the gross national product. Eighty percent of new jobs in this country are dependent on family businesses. And, while often portrayed as “mom and pop” shops, family-owned businesses actually comprise about one-third of Fortune 500 corporations. Successful family businesses, passed on like keepsakes from generation to generation, are the backbone of American commerce. Yet, according to the Family Business Foundation, a not-for-profit organization in New York City that provides an educational resource to these companies, barely more than 10 percent survive past the third generation. What’s the Problem? Too often, family issues spill over into the business, draining the emotion and the lifeblood (profit) out of the business, and creating a strain on the family. Although more than 70 percent of the average family’s wealth is tied up in its business, many family members never believe the gravy train could come to a screeching halt. And when the family business falls on difficult financial times, all too often entire families are caught in an emotional maelstrom that pits sibling against sibling, cousin vs. cousin, or one generation against another.

by Carol A. Schwab Three years ago when we first conceived the idea for The Forum for Family and Consumer Issues FFCI ), we simply wanted a means to bring people back to our home page. A quarterly periodical seemed to be a good plan. The early success of FFCI persuaded us that it should be bigger than a departmental publication, so last year we decided to take it national. As a result of that decision, we now have a national Editorial Board with representatives from 23 different universities or governmental agencies. Since "going national," we have received a number of questions about what sort of articles FFCI is interested in publishing. The answer to this question defines who we are, how we are different, and what we want to achieve.
Who Are We?
The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at N.C. State University is 100 percent Cooperative Extension. FFCI 's Editorial Board members have Extension appointments, a background in Extension, or a working understanding of Extension. Cooperative Extension's mission is "Helping individuals, families, and communities put research-based knowledge to work to help improve their lives." Extension in all 50 states is the "bridge" between the universities and the people.

Overview
Family planning programs and modern contraceptives enable millions of couples and individuals throughout the world to plan the number and spacing of their children or to avoid pregnancy altogether. Today almost 60 percent of couples use some form of contraception and over 50 percent use modern methods well on the way to the 70 percent use that demographers call the "fully contracepting society." Changing priorities
The 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) transformed the agenda for international family planning. The consensus forged in Cairo emphasized individual human rights over national development and population goals, redefined family planning as one element of comprehensive reproductive health care services, viewed health within a broader social context, and acknowledged the importance of equity and empowerment for women. Since the Cairo meeting, family planning programs have set new goals, including:

This section provides brief summaries of some of the major issues in delivering high-quality, cost-effective family planning services in low-resource settings. Increasing access to family planning
Access to contraceptive supplies and services affects the likelihood that people adopt a method, continue using it, or switch methods when they are dissatisfied (Ali, 2001; Ross et al., 2002; Steele and Geel, 1999; Steele et al., 1999). In some settings, access may even be more important than a couple's reproductive intentions in determining contraceptive use. Some researchers have speculated that increasing access to family planning actually influences couples' intentions, that is, it prompts them to feel a need for family planning (Magniani et al., 1999;

By Tarry Lindquist
Here's the story on historical fiction in my classroom: It illuminates time periods, helps me integrate the curriculum, and enriches social studies. Just take Amy's word for it. At the end of our westward-expansion unit, while modeling her journal entry after a fictional account we'd read, this fifth grader wrote: "Dear Diary, July 30, 1852: This journey has been heart-wrenching, thirst-quenching, and most of all, an adventure I will never forget." Blending stories into a study of history turns the past into a dynamic place. Of course, historical fiction doesn't stand alone in my instructional program; even the best literature cannot address skills and processes unique to social studies that kids must learn. I have students balance fiction with fact, validate historical hypotheses with research. Historical fiction is the spice. To help you build good fiction into your social studies program, below you'll find:
