http://www.sedl.org/pubs/fam32/5.html
This lack of clarity and agreement about what and who is included in the concept of family and community connections with schools creates a challenge for those who seek models that are practicable and yield measurable results. When achieved, however, the rewards will be many, for effective connections can improve student achievement in school, support student success in life, and nurture the development of healthy schools, families, and communities.
Ways Families Connect with Schools
The following are some of the specific types of family connections with schools that were described in the literature reviewed:
  • Supportive home environment, including the supervision and structure that parents give children outside of school to support their education, such as limiting television viewing time and providing structured time for homework and learning (Shumow, 2001; Xu, 2001).
Parent-child discussions and interactions about school-related issues and activities, including parental advice and guidance on academic decisions and course placements (Catsambis, 1998; Yonezawa, 2000).

Life as a Parent
This is an excellent introduction to the world of parenthood. It provides a light, common sense approach to parenting and gives good advice for each phase that your child will pass through.
How to Teach Your Children Discipline
Children have to be taught discipline. They are not born with it. Little by little parents have to teach it to them. While teaching discipline does take time and practice, it gets easier as children learn to control their own behavior. And best of all, teaching discipline does not have to hurt either the parents or the kids. This is a great article, filled with answers to commonly asked questions and contains many helpful suggestions for parents.
Emergency Illness And Injury Procedures
When parents enroll their child, they should provide child care provider with the contact information and consent that they will need if there is an emergency involving that child. A sample "Child Care Emergency Contact Information and Consent Form" is included in this section, along with first aid measures one should take under different situations.

SHOW NAME TARGET AGE Squigglevision 8 - 12 years "Squigglevision" offers an entertaining approach to education. In addition to the "Science Court" story, each episode includes segments on arithmetic estimation techniques ("See You Later, Estimator") and Vocabulary skills ("The Last Word"). The series uses activities at a radio station and in a courtroom as vehicles for teaching scientific concepts and their everyday applications. Characters use critical- thinking skills, demonstrating both inductive and deductive reasoning as they evaluate hypotheses in light of data. Scientific and math estimation concepts are illustrated via practical demonstrations and graphics. The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh 3 - 6 years Based on the classic Winnie The Pooh books by author A.A. Milne, "The New Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh" depicts the everyday lives of Christopher Robin and his companions Pooh, Piglet, Rabbit, Tigger, Eeyore, Owl and Gopher. Series episodes deliver strong messages about honesty, responsibility, persistence, cooperative effort, friendship and caring. Many stories are designed to help young children distinguish between fantasy and reality and overcome common childhood fears. Sabrina: The Animated Series 8 - 11 years Twelve-year-old Sabrina Spellman, who is half witch and half mortal, is being raised in a non-traditional family consisting of her Uncle Quigley and two young aunts. Series episodes explore social and developmental issues such as peer pressure/competition, loyalty and friendship, responsibility, honesty, facing fears, speaking up for one's beliefs, etc. Family issues such as divorce and remarriage and household rules are also addressed.

June 1998 ERIC
Family and Intergenerational Literacy in Multilingual Communities

National Center for ESL Literacy Education (NCLE) by Gail Weinstein
San Francisco University
The terms intergenerational literacy and family literacy have been used to describe how literacy is valued and used in the lives of children and adults. They have also been used to describe educational programs designed to strengthen literacy resources by involving at least two generations. While there are many differences in definitions and approaches, a key notion that most family and intergenerational literacy studies and programs share is a recognition that the relationships between children and adults are important and that these relationships affect literacy use and development.
What research has informed family and intergenerational literacy work?
In this period, interest grew in exploring how families for whom English is not the native language use languages and literacies. Studies of language use among Mexican Americans (Delgado-Gaitan, 1987), Navajos (McGlaughlin, 1992), Cambodians (Hornberger, 1996), and the Hmong (Weinstein, 1990/1997) for example, illustrate how language and literacy use reflect values, beliefs, and views of the world that are culturally patterned and may or may not be shared by school teachers and others. Ethnographic research makes it possible to document these differences and explore their consequences. As immigrant children gain access to English more quickly than their parents, this approach also makes it possible to look at the role of language and literacy in changing intergenerational relationships (Weinstein-Shr, 1995).
