Family Literacy and Adult English Language Learners
Family literacy programs have been recognized as a way to help children become successful in school while adults develop literacy skills. The Adult Education and Family Literacy Act, Title II of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998, reflects this dual goal in its encouragement of adults to "become full partners in the educational development of their children." The law also mentions helping adults to "become literate and obtain the knowledge and skills necessary for employment and self-sufficiency."
Trends and Issues
The Even Start Family Literacy Program, first authorized in 1988 as part of Title 1 of the Elementary and Secondary Act of 1965 (ESEA), is the major family literacy initiative administered by the U. S. Department of Education (2001). Many family literacy programs, including Even Start, use an educational model with four components (U.S. Department of Education, n.d., Programs and responsibilities: Even Start
  • Adult education and adult literacy
  • Parenting education to help parents support the educational growth of their children
  • Interactive parent and child literacy activities.

As as kid watching "The Wizard of Oz" for the first time, I remember thinking I was home free once I got past those scary flying monkeys and the Wicked Witch of the West. But suddenly at the end there was the large falsely projected Wizard shouting at our heroes to "Pay No Attention to the Man Behind the Curtain!" Attending the latest hearing in the effort to save Terri Schiavo's life was like that right down to the thick, rich red curtains in the background. The entire proceeding was structured to make the real person with disabilities named Terri disappear behind the curtain of talk while the huge threat of her being starved to death could not be banished. Moral/Ethical Issues How should I talk with children about the death of a family member and about death in general? Please give me some insight to the following quote from the Portals of Prayer , June 18, 2000, devotional: "God gives each of us roles to fill. The father is to be the spiritual leader in the family. He is to see that his children are baptized, that they come daily to God's Word and learn of God's salvation through His Son. He is to teach them the difference between right and wrong." This is a great example of how a family can work. However, I am a divorced mother and there is no man in our household. Is the church's stance on the father being the spiritual leader of the family so strong that the church would believe our family is spiritually "lost" because we have no male person as head of our household? Or is it that the word "father" here is used in more of a role title rather than only suggest gender? What is the Synod's position on cloning , whether of an animal or of human beings?

Unfortunately, though, girls and youth of color still lag behind white males in math achievement and even in enrollment in higher math courses. Further, many poor or immigrant adults did not have the opportunity to learn math; thus, they have limited job opportunities, cannot serve as models for their children, and may even fail to realize the value of mastering math.

I was very active in all sorts of left Zionist (what would now be called "anti-Zionist") mostly Hebrew-speaking "groups," but the groups scarcely merited the name, and I was pretty much a loner even in them. Later, I was part of a lot of movement activities (like Resist), and took part in tons of things, but usually in my own way. I've often been close to radical Christians, for example, and have found much of what they did inspiring all right (even stayed in the Jesuit house when I visited Managua). But it would be absurd to say I was part of such communities. The Chomsky Household
Mikveh Israel today
Avram Noam Chomsky was born 7 December 1928 to Dr. William (Zev) Chomsky and Elsie Simonofsky, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Chomsky had fled from his native Russia to the United States in 1913 in order to avoid being drafted into the Czarist army. Upon arrival, he worked in sweatshops in Baltimore, Maryland. He then managed to work his way through the Johns Hopkins University supporting himself by teaching in Baltimore Hebrew elementary schools. After moving to Philadelphia, he and his wife began teaching at the religious school of the Mikveh Israel congregation. Eventually, Dr. Chomsky was to become principal of this school.

Dr. Chomsky continued to pursue his research in the field of medieval Hebrew language" and went on to become, according to a 22 July 1977 ... It is certainly not surprising that, "as a boy of 9, in 1938, [Noam] used to sit in the front row of the Hebrew class at Mikveh Israel ... paying little attention to the teacher [who happened, on occasion, to be his mother]. He was not being disrespectful; he happened to have covered the ground long before, at home, with his parents" (Otero, "Third Emancipatory Phase" 22). Said Itzhak Sankowsky, one of his Hebrew teachers, "it was expected from his family background that he should know more Hebrew than anybody else. Superficially, you couldn't tell there was something unusual there. You had to bring it out with a debate or a bit of knowledge. Then you knew" (qtd. in Yergin 41).

Such tools, however, need to be used with prevention and social skills materials because many behavioral issues are interrelated. Defining sexual harassment concepts and teaching preventive skills can be more effective and welcome when such concepts and skills are considered in the context of broader, pro-social outcomes.

The FTC makes the following recommendations:

  • Experimenting with alcohol can lead to other drug use. Parents who are alcoholics place their kids at higher risk for alcohol abuse. Alcohol use often leads to risky behaviors. This is especially true for children, who are less experienced at making their own decisions. It could lead to drinking and driving, unprotected sex (risk of pregnancy or a sexually transmitted disease), injury, trouble with the law, or other drug use. Children may use alcohol to deal with other problems they have. Does your child have another problem in addition to her alcohol use? Your own attitude about drinking greatly impacts your child's attitude about drinking.

Teaching Your Child
Start Early Give Child Self-Confidence Tailor Teaching to Age Let Child Guide You ... Go to Teaching Links
Start early Two years old is not too early to start teaching your child about safety. A three-year-old can learn how to talk on a telephone and how to make an emergency call (post the number on the wall, and make sure he or she can reach the telephone at all times). Between 3 and 4 years old, a child can learn a home number and address. To help reinforce the child's memory, paste your home phone number on the wall and on the telephone, and practice calling the number from other places. A really great way to reinforce lessons you've taught is to have your child teach you. Pretend to be a younger sibling, or a young friend or play Barbies or dolls and have your child teach you or the dolls how to handle different situations. This forces the child to think and to apply the lessons. Give your child self-confidence Safer Child has provided you with an ever-evolving list of Teaching Links to helpful organizations that work to teach you how to teach and protect your child. Safer Child isn't suggesting you hound your children to a point at which they're afraid of their own shadow. But you can gradually introduce them to the notion that there is the potential for danger. Then, because it wouldn't be fair to tell them that and not give them the self-confidence or skills to cope with it, make sure they know that you (and other caregivers) will protect them, and that, over time, they also can learn how to protect themselves.
