Introduction
Yee-Ha! We want to welcome all of you young cowboys and cowgirls to come join us on our field trip to the rodeo. Put on your ropers and cowboy hats and prepare yourself for a ripping good time. We will read a story about farm life, round-up animals on the internet, play some games and color some barnyard animals.
LEARNING ABOUT FARM LIFE:
Erin!
Activity: The class will read the story "Life on A Chicken Farm".
  • How old was she Erin when she first started raising chickens? Name two ways that Erin takes care of chickens? Tell me one thing about barn duty. Name one of the chicken breeds that Erin enters in the fair.

  • ANIMALS SEEN AT THE RODEO: 4-H Farm Animal Awareness Workbook Activity: Look at each of the animals in this site and look for differences and similarities.
  • Which animals eat oats? Which animals have two legs and which have four? Which animals may have horns? Name one other differnce you see between the animals.

    The Topic:
    Wolves
Easier - A wolf is a wild animal that looks like a dog. Wolves are in the same family as pet dogs. Wolves live in remote forests. They hunt in packs and feed on deer, elk, and reindeer. Harder - A wolf is a carnivorous mammal. When hunting, they often howl as a signal to other wolves in their pack. Females have four to six pups each spring. In many areas, the wolves are nearly gone because they were killed by humans. Wolf recovery programs are reintroducing wolves to remote forests. Many people such as ranchers are unhappy about these wolves. They say that the wolves will kill their cattle and sheep. Others see the reintroduction as important in reestablishing a balance in nature. International Wolf Center at Ely, Minnesota

To say of it "Here is a magnificent novel" is rather like gazing into the Grand Canyon and remarking, "Well, well, well; quite a slice." Doubtless you have heard that this book is not pleasant. Neither is the Atlantic Ocean. -Dorothy Parker O ne of the main characteristics of experimental films is that they tend to make hash of the terms we use to speak about narrative features, and James Benning's haunting, beautiful, and awesome Deseret (1995)-his eighth feature- length film-performs this valuable function from the outset. To say that Deseret is "directed" and "written" by Benning requires some bending of the categories. He "directed" it insofar as he conceived the project, filmed the images, recorded the s ound, and edited the sound and images; he "wrote" it insofar as he compiled and edited the texts that are read offscreen by Fred Gardner, though he didn't write them. In a Hollywood film the directorial tasks described above would be carried out by a prod ucer, cinematographer, sound recordist, editor, and sound editor; it's anybody's guess what the compiler and editor of the text would be called (researcher? script editor? production assistant?).

    Electronic puzzles
Finding "innovative" products is always fun and this week, I have two recommendations, ( Jigsaw It! and Kirei ) both from a Japanese company called DYNAWARE. The company is not well known in the U.S., but they are the third largest developer of software in Japan. They made their name in CAD/CAM and Midi Products. The San Francisco Bay Area affiliate group develops "new-wave" software, targeting universal audiences. If you're familiar with EA Kids' Art Center , you will recognize the yellow icon character in Jigsaw It! The work is done by the same artist. Jigsaw It! makes electronic jigsaw puzzles. This is a concept that lends itself to computers so well that I'm surprised that the market isn't overrun with similar products. Jigsaw It! is the first that I've seen. Just think, parents: no more puzzle pieces underfoot. No more searching for stray parts. Users can customize Jigsaw It!

    INVITATION
How can we help students to begin to understand what encompasses a farming community? How do we help them understand the connections between farm animals and the products that come from farms? How do we motivate students to learn the tasks and responsibilities involved in running a farm?
    TASKS
Students begin the project by learning about different farm animals, what their babies are called, and what sounds they make. Students create multimedia projects that illustrate a farm community.
    TOOLS
Computers. AppleWorks; Art Mania 12,000; HyperStudio or mPOWER; Kid Pix Studio Deluxe.
    INTERACTIONS
The teacher sets an atmosphere to reflect a farm community and the students role-play the animals. The teacher shows students slides or photographs of different farms and what types of items are found on them. Once the atmosphere has been set, the teacher begins working with students on topics such as specific farm animals and what they provide for us. Students then create multimedia projects that illustrate a farm community.

    Introduction
Multimedia is the presentation of information through a combination of different formats, including text, audio, images, animation, video, and virtual reality. It is one of the major features that makes the World Wide Web the most exciting part of the Internet. Multimedia files are designated by suffixes added to the end of file names. . Both of the major browsers - and Microsoft Internet Explorer - maintain lists of these add-ons. In addition, there are Web sites that specialize in tracking and linking to new browser add-ons, such as BrowserWatch Browsers.com , and ActiveX.com Download the audio plug-in RealPlayer

Sounds and Pictures in Words: Images in Literature for Young Adults
    Connie S. Zitlow
Louise Rosenblatt 1978, 32 Literature is one of the arts, and reading literature is an artistic, or aesthetic, experience that has something in common with such other aesthetic experiences as listening to music, watching dance, or looking at paintings. ( Bruce E. Miller 1980, 3 Great stories give us metaphors that flash upon the mind the way lightning flashes upon the earth, illumination for an instant an entire landscape that had been hidden. ( Paula Fox, quoted in Zitlow, 1997, 413-414 Students can learn a great deal from experiences with literature that has powerful imagery, works written artfully by an author who is willing to test the boundaries of the genre, works that require the same type of thoughtful contemplation and effort one uses when viewing a piece of visual art. Why then should teachers ignore the imagery in a body of literature that is available to a generation of students who view and listen everyday? An important way we as people think and learn is by using images, such as visual connections and sound associations. The use of images, or imagery, is a primary underlying structure in language, media, and mind. It is a basic element in communicating and creating, an integral part of thinking, speaking, listening, reading, and writing. "Language and images are inextricably linked in how we generate them, how we make meaning from them, how we use them, and how we remember them" (

    THE PROJECT
    A NEW WORLD
When taking these pictures, I had to allow myself to view the farm as a place of mystery. I thought mainly about my childhood and what things made farms special to me. I always loved playing in the hay, the sounds of animals like the sheep baaing, and the cows mooing, and the potent smell of chicken manure. These memories are what made a farm a unique and adventurous place for me to experience. As I followed children around, I watched as they took simple pleasures in feeding the animals, playing on rocks, or just staring in awe at the sights surrounding them.
