Overview Anyone planning to successfully market soybeans must develop a solid plan. This marketing plan should include price or profit objectives, and a time plan for action. An old saying among commodity traders is, “Plan your trades, and then trade your plan.” A consistent trading plan is necessary to protect sellers from changing plans in response to the market emotions of the moment. The most dangerous emotions in grain marketing are fear and greed. These emotions can and will affect your selling decisions. A solid trading plan is the only effective weapon against these emotions. It is said that when a trader with no plan crawls into bed at night, his old buddies, fear and greed, will crawl in with him. Other elements are important considerations in the development of a grain marketing plan. These include:

Extension Marketing and Cooperative Development Specialist Value added agriculture does not, and probably never will, increase commodity prices, but it can add value to those products by performing activities usually performed by someone else. The benefit comes from the value added activity performed. Another distinction is that the value added goes back to producers both directly or through producer owned businesses, not agribusiness processors. Some of the ideas being developed for value added enterprises in Ohio are a straw board plant, a corn ethanol plant, white pine processing, meat goat processing, fish processing, vegetable processing, and soybean processing. There are many other ideas waiting to be developed. These developments will help to support and sustain agriculture in Ohio. Predicted trends in agriculture that support the development of value added agriculture activities are:
  • To stay competitive, U.S. farming must move towards a more industrial model in order to cooperatively produce products with improved, consumer driven attributes. The focus of the production sector will continue to move away from growing products and towards the manufacturing of goods with value added consumer-driven attributes. Niche markets and a growing demand by consumers for a variety of preprocessed, ready-to-cook, and ready-to-eat foods will become a significant force in the development of value added products.

36. Family Farmers, Family Farm Markets
For most farm markets the centerpiece of their attractiveness is apples. Manyof these farms have two and three generations active in their management.
http://www.michiganapples.com/famfarm.html
Family Farmers, Family Farm Markets
Michigan's apple growers combine the best of old-fashioned agriculture blended with the sophistication of 21st-century agriculture. They're family farmers who live close to their orchards. They sink or swim by the skills they bring to their operations. Those skills are a far cry from what used to be adequate in fruit growing. Apple growers have to manage incredibly complex biological systems while trying to make a profit in a highly competitive environment. Another aspect of their traditional, close-to-the-land way of life is the marketing strategies that many employ. Although most Michigan apples are wholesaled and sold through supermarkets near and far, many growers keep their produce right at home and sell it through their own farm markets. Roadside Marketing
Michigan is regarded as the roadside-marketing capital of the nation. No definitive statistics are collected, but it is thought that no other state has as great a concentration of farm markets as Michigan does. There are so many, in fact, that the Michigan Department of Agriculture's (MDA) periodically published listings result in sizable booklets. The MDA's 1998-99

1993 National Organic Farmers' Survey Results
Executive Summary
In 1993 the Organic Farming Research Foundation (OFRF) mailed an eight-page survey to 2700 certified organic farmers in the United States that belonged to the fifty-four organic verification organizations and chapters that would share their lists with OFRF. 550 surveys (20.3%) were returned from growers in 39 states. Following are highlights of the 1993 survey results.
Information Resources
The sources of information growers indicated using most frequently are newsletters and magazines (87%) and other farmers (84%). Organic farmers rate other farmers as their most useful source of information, followed closely by newsletters and magazines, and all types of meetings. More than half of organic farmers also use catalogs and books (73%), attend conferences (66%), and consult suppliers (66%), buyers (55%), and extension advisors (53%). Substantially fewer organic farmers use electronic media (TV, video, radio, audio and computer), but those who do may use them quite frequently (e.g. 30 times per year for radio; 11 times per year for computers). Electronic media are considerably less useful as rated by all farmers in the survey, but those who report using them rate them about as high as some other people that they consult (suppliers, buyers, and extension advisors).

http://www.usda.gov/mission/ffas.htm
Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services (FFAS) Mission Area
The Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services mission area, comprised of the FarmService Agency, the Foreign Agricultural Service, and the Risk Management Agency, helps keep America's farmers and ranchers in business as they face the uncertainties of weather and markets. They deliver commodity, credit, conservation, disaster, and emergency assistance programs that help improve the stability and strength of the agricultural economy. FFAS contributes to the vitality of the farm sector with programs that encourage the expansion of export markets for U.S. agriculture. In cooperation with the private sector, this mission area offers broad-based crop insurance programs and other risk management tools.
  • Farm Service Agency (FSA) helps ensure the well-being of U.S. agriculture through efficient and equitable administration of farm commodity programs; farm operating, ownership, and emergency loans; conservation and environmental programs; emergency and disaster assistance; domestic and international food assistance; and international export credit programs. These programs are major components of USDA's farm safety net, which helps producers maintain viable operations, compete for export sales of commodities, and contribute to the year-round availability of low-cost, safe, and nutritious foods. Authorizing Legislation: FSA was established when USDA was reorganized under the Federal Crop Insurance Reform and Department of Agriculture Reorganization Act of 1994, P. L. 103-354.
