The Market Management Program continues to be our single most highly intensive program. This program currently involves year-round activities including:
market start-up activities within each community (i.e. meetings, permit applications, contracts, Board hearings, etc.)
farmer/vendor application review and market placement, collection of market fees, recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating of on-site Market Managers, administration of the market budgets, promotional activities, problem-solving, and facilitation of market meetings. The Federation served 17 member markets in 1999. Out of those 17 markets, 14 were fully managed by our association. Member and managed markets are listed within the Farmers’ Market Programs Summary of the annual report. Detailed discussions relative to each managed market take place on a “per market basis” at individual market fall meetings and are published as meeting minutes and specific market rules. The following outline highlights points of particular interest on the overall association level.

With their guidance and collaboration, the NFDP creates employment, marketing and farm ownership opportunities in the small farm sector in NYC and its region. The NFDP fosters a new farmer community engaged in sustainable agriculture, preserves farmland, strengthens and expands local marketing outlets, and works with similar projects nationwide and internationally. The NFDP provides on-farm education, business and marketing training, mentoring opportunities, technical assistance, credit opportunities, and access to project land and other farms.

  • Description Impact The Center for Farm Financial Management continued to refine existing software and issue new software decision aids. During 1999-2000, they distributed 1,644 copies of FINPACK, 291 copies of Marketeer, 44 copies of Dairy Champ, 49 copies of Manure Application Plan, 15 copies of their Risk Rating software, and 48 copies of a program to complete FSA forms. CCFM staff trained 134 people in the use of FINPACK-including 50 Extension staff (46 from states other than Minnesota), 13 agricultural educators, 59 lenders, 4 other professionals, and 8 farmers. In addition, CCFM trained 52 people in the use of "Marketeer"their new risk management software-4 Minnesota Extension educators and 48 agricultural educators. The CCFM also conducted a number of "Winning the Game" Marketing Workshops. A total of 390 trainees participated, including 345 farmers, 24 Minnesota Extension educators, and 21 other agricultural professionals. Participants were surveyed regarding how much they planned to increase forward marketing as a result of their new knowledge and skills. The projected net return just for soybeans from the 169 producers who responded totaled nearly $408,000. If corn and wheat has been included, this return likely would be doubled.

TIERRA MIGUEL FOUNDATION Our present picture
December 2002 Incorporation The founding Board of Trustees established Tierra Miguel Foundation on October 29, 1999. On April 7, 2000, Tierra Miguel Foundation filed Articles of Incorporation with the State of California as a Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation for charitable and educational purposes. It received its 501(c)3 federal IRS tax exemption designation August 30, 2001. Agricultural and Land Conservation Tierra Miguel Foundation (TMF) leases 87 acres of certified organic farmland in Pauma Valley, California. The acreage was leased from the landowner, William Potter, as of September 2000. The Foundation's goal is to purchase the property and to arrange for its conservation so that the land will be permanently preserved for agricultural use. Our goal is to secure the purchase and land conservation by September 2003. We anticipate combined cost of the land, development rights and land conservation, final business expenditures, and minor improvements will run approximately $3.3 million. We are finalizing the funding plan for purchase and conservation by identifying interested donor and funding groups. Currently these include: local community groups and private donors from California and elsewhere, government organizations such as the California Department of Conservation, California Coastal Conservancy, and United States Department of Agriculture, and interested foundations and corporations.
