Poultry Nutrient Management Awareness Program for Growers
Printable PDF Version (2 pages) At the request of the poultry industry, an awareness program for nutrient management was developed and delivered for contract poultry growers throughout the state. This program was planned through a multi-disciplinary group, the Water Quality/Nutrient Management Task Force, which is a comprehensive research and extension task force composed of extension specialists and researchers. The program focused on the following major topics:
  • Utilization of poultry waste nutrients in forage production. Nutrient management regulations in poultry (where we have been, where we currently are, and where we are going). Components of Nutrient Management Plans for poultry. Alternative uses of poultry litter, especially as a cattle feed for beef producers.
The overall program was developed, then followed, by an agent in-service training program. A special communication plan was developed for use by agents and specialists in communicating availability of training to poultry producers. Following the in-service training, 12 individual poultry trainings were held in the poultry-growing central and southern parts of the state between May 11 and June 1, 2000.
Workshop Evaluation
A total of 297 evaluations were received from more than 300 poultry growers who attended these workshops. The evaluation instrument documented the high value of the information and satisfaction by participants, and in addition, identified needs of poultry growers.

Department of Crop and Soil Sciences Cropping Systems Research: The Agronomy Farm Developing principles and strategies fundamental to reducing risks, increasing profits and improving environmental quality
The Situation Increased world competitiveness, the phase-out of gov't support programs and growing environmental concerns are stimulating a re-evaluation of crop rotation and tillage systems. The Challenge Building research capacity for competitive cropping systems requires the combined experience, expertise, and resources of growers, researchers, industry, and agency people of the region. Coordination and implementation of our efforts will lead to creative solutions not imagined by more singular efforts. Located in Whitman County, five miles Northeast of Pullman, the 140-acre Agronomy Farm includes soils and topography representative of the Annual Cropping Region. A group of 14 WSU and 8 USDA-ARS researchers is currently working to develop and implement a coordinated cropping systems project designed to meet the needs of growers in this higher precipitation region of the Inland Northwest. Guided by an Advisory Committee comprised of a diverse constituency, the research conducted at the Agronomy Farm will strive to develop new guiding principles and practices fundamental to reducing risks, increasing profits, and improving environmental quality.

http://web.uflib.ufl.edu/spec/archome/Series91a.htm
Subseries 91a Florida Cooperative Extension Service.
Annual reports, 1917-1948. This subseries is arranged as follows: first administrative reports of the director, leaders, and district agents in chronological order followed by departmental reports arranged alphabetically and chronologically within individual files. These are followed by county agent statistical and narrative reports and then county agent Plan of Work reports. All of the above is classified as Men's' Work. The second major division is Home Demonstration and is arranged similarly to the Men's' Work. Within the county agent and Home Demonstration agents reports, racial segregation is also evident. Additionally, there are a small number of special reports on unique projects, studies and trips. These are arranged alphabetically among the departmental reports.
The home demonstration reports offer a complete description of the varied activities of the home demonstration agents. A number of these reports include photographs of farms, farm homes (interior and exterior), rural crafts and other farm products such as canned foods entered in annual competitive shows. Florida's rural folk are featured in both photographs and narrative anecdotes generally reflecting an improvement effected in living conditions or a triumph over adversity as a result of the supportive efforts of the local home demonstration agent. That part of the series covering the Depression years is particularly revealing of the economic condition of rural Floridians and the state and federal governments' response to their plight.
