The 16,000 inhabitants of the Faroe Islands are all Lutherans Political and Religious History Christianity ; as early as 1076 they had a bishop of their own. The bishops of the Faroe islands were usually chosen from the canons of Bergen, and were originally suffragans of Hamburg-Bremen, later of Lund (1104), finally (since 1152) of the Primate of Norway in Trondjem. There were in all twenty-three Catholic bishops, from Gunmund to Amund Olafson. The latter was forced to yield to the Lutheran superintendent Jens Riber, who also took over the episcopal title. Later on only "provosts" were elected. The Catholic clergy remained steadfast in their faith, but were unable to resist the advance of Protestantism Protestant worship. Projects Linking land and sea around Faroe Islands and Svalbard
    (NORDLINK) Project summary:
The purpose of the proposed project is to study the timing and interactions between Late Weichselian and Holocene climatic change in the central sector of the North Atlantic, in vicinity of the maximum polar pack ice limit, such as registered by terrestrial and marine records. The region of interest will be the Faroe Islands and Svalbard, including the surrounding shelf and slopes. The project will consist of individual research themes, which will be coupled together in an overall synthesis, thereby emphasising the mapping, monitoring and modelling research approach of the project. Both areas are situated in vicinity of the modern Holocene North Atlantic maximum pack ice limit and both local climate and oceanography are consequently extremely sensitive towards any environmental variations. In contrast to most continental research sites, due to their limited size, the Faroe Islands and Svalbard are not liable to generate any significant climatic feed-back effects, such as caused by variations in snow cover. Both areas are located in or near branches of the North Atlantic Current, and therefore represent unique locations for registering regional North Atlantic climatic variations, past as well as present.

Faroe Islands You may not know where the Faroe Islands are, but their history and geography make them a great destination in northern Europe. Midway between Scotland and Iceland, the islands were an early destination for the Vikings, and they are reachable by plane or ferry from various cities in northern Europe. If you love hiking, you'll love the striking vistas afforded by dramatic cliffs. The Faroe Islands have more than 685 miles of coastline, so the seafood is as fresh as it can get. • Geography
The Faroe Islands are formed from volcanic rock and the landscape mainly consists of cultivated grass. Apart from 3.5 million birds, the most popular one being the puffin, the Faroes share their green islands with 80,000 sheep, which graze on the Faroese mountainsides. Føroya actually means "land of the sheep" and the Faroese sheep are free-range animals in the true sense of the word. In places difficult to access they are only in touch with humans twice in their lifetime: when they are let loose as lambs and when they are herded together as fully-grown animals. An old Faroese saying has it that the sheep are a wandering barometer. They come down from the mountains to the sea when cool weather is coming, and they return to the mountains when warmer weather is on the way. The climate in the Faroe Islands is distinctly oceanic, with predominately cool summers and mild winters when the Gulf Stream keeps the waters ice-free. In autumn and especially winter there is plenty of rain and strong winds, leading to several hurricanes in the 1990s. Boat in front of church History and Politics
Vikings, who may have driven away an earlier colony of Irish monks, settled the Faroe Islands in the early ninth century. In the eleventh century the Faroes became a Norwegian fiefdom and Christianity was introduced. Denmark and Norway were united in 1380, and the Faroes came under Danish rule. When Denmark and Norway parted in 1824, the Faroes remained part of the kingdom of Denmark.
