Lonely Planet Lonely Planet guide to Faroe Islands and the world Order Now
Faroe Islands History St Brendan and his monks sailed past a couple of islands in the 6th century that they named the Island of Sheep and the Paradise of Birds, and modern day historians have speculated that both islands were in the Faroes. The Paradise of Birds may well have been Mykines, the Faroes' westernmost island with an unusually dense bird population. The first human settlers were Irish monks, who did not arrive till late in the 6th century. They were no doubt seeking pagans whose souls they could save, or places where they could leave peaceful lives of devotion. Little information remains about their stay, but it's likely that the herds of sheep that the Norse found there in the 9th century originated from hardy stock the Irish brought with them. Like those who settled Iceland, the first Norse to arrive in the Faroes were simple farmers and pastoralists looking for a peaceful place free of the ravages of pirates and tyrants on the mainland. According to the , written in Iceland during the 13th century, the Faroes converted to Christianity around 1000 and became a constitutional part of the Kingdom of Norway in 1035. Norway was formally joined to the Kingdom of Denmark in 1380, and the Faroes adopted a Danish system of law and justice. From very early on, the government of the Faroes lay in the

A Review of Faroese Postal History
(Nielsen, 1986; Lost og fast af Faeroernes posthistorie; plus separate English translation volume by Amedro, 1996) This gem has been largely inaccessible to collectors of Faroe until Amedro's little-known ENGLISH translation was published. Two volume set; the original with Faroe text and illustrations and then the translation. A very interesting background of the development of Faroe postal history and the post. Will be of great interest to any collector of Faroe covers.
The Faroe Post 1877-2000 (Johannesen, 2000; Postur i Foroyum) An impressive 528-page hardbound volume documenting the history of the Faroe post office (not postal history, but history of the post). Hundreds of illustrations, many in color, including all the stamps. Though entirely in Faroese, the illustrations will be of great interest to serious collectors of Faroe. I even note illustrations of what appears to be Faroese Tin Can Mail!

THE ART SOCIETY'S HISTORY
The majority of the young first generation of artists who in the 1930s to 40s were trained at the Art College in Copenhagen were in Copenhagen when Denmark was occupied by the Germans in 1940. Amongst them was S.J. Mikines, the first of the professional Faroese artists. When, shortly after this, the Faroe Islands were occupied by British forces all contact between the Faroe Islands and Denmark was cut off. In 1941 Faroese students in Copenhagen founded the Faroe Islands Art Society with the aim of encouraging this new pictorial art. After the war the artists came home to the Faroes and along with them the Art Society, which became a very important factor in the artistic milieu which developed in Tórshavn in the 1950s. IIn 1948, at the suggestion of the Art Society, the Faroese government established a national collection of Faroese art. The Faroe Islands Art Society built the exhibition building - "Listaskálin", which was opened in 1970. In 1989 the national Faroese art collection and the art collection of the Art Society and " Listaskálin " were combined into one institution
