There are many ways of being a parent and each person will bring a unique range of experiences to his role as a dad.
Dads will bring experiences from their own father as well as cultural influences and values.
There are also social values about fatherhood that are constantly shaping the way men play a part in their role as a father.
Children need physical and emotional comfort as well as intimacy and protection.
Happy and healthy children grow and develop within a range of fathering styles. Special times are important but sharing simple daily tasks serve the same purpose. You should seek to share in the everyday life of your child. Some Suggestions Be aware of the way your baby shows how he/she feels to his mother and yourself. Talk to others about ways to reassure and comfort your child and try them yourself.

Surely a basic unity of objectives should govern the educational systems of the nations, even though uniformity of method and of techniques may not be possible. Differences of language, of background and of culture will and should always exist; they constitute the beautiful tapestry of human living down the ages. But much that has hitherto militated against right human relations must and should be eliminated. These wars, aggression and thefts which have distinguished every great nation without exception are facts and can not be denied. Surely, however, the lessons of the evils which they wrought (culminating in the war 1914-1945) can be [46] pointed out and the ancient causes of present day prejudices and dislikes can be shown and their futility emphasized. Is it not possible to build our theory of history upon the great and good ideas which have conditioned the nations and made them what they are, and emphasize the creativity which has distinguished all of them? Can we not present more effectively the great cultural epochs which - suddenly appearing in some one nation - enriched the entire world and gave to humanity its literature, its art and its vision? Two major ideas should be taught to the children of every country. They are:

Quality Time with Dear Old Dad
What is "quality" time? It's time spent together talking, sharing, and learning about each other. Lots of girls say they'd like to spend more quality time with their dads, but they don't know what to do. Here are some ways to spend quality time with your dad (or, if not your dad, another important male role model in your life, such as your grandfather, uncle, or teacher.)
Go for a ride.
Why not pump up those tires and go for a long bike ride with your dad? You can get great exercise and watch the world go by as you zip around corners and over hills. Check out maps of local trails and plot your course together before you go. Be sure to take lots of water and remember, to always wear your bicycle helmet.
Read a book to him.
Remember when you were little and your dad used to read you a book before you went to bed? Why not switch roles and read a book to him instead? Turn off the television and read one chapter a night. Try an adventure story, a classic like Old Yeller, or maybe even a mystery that will give you both goosebumps.
Play catch.

Christmas Valentine's Day Easter Sunday Mothers' Day Fathers' Day
The Sunday Friends Foundation has always made holidays special. Every Christmas, Valentine's Day, Mothers' Day, and Fathers' Day, we focus on helping the families to make, earn, "purchase", and gift-wrap gifts for each other so they can have the means to give as well as receive. We also provide creatively framed photos of the children as the most precious gifts of all.
Halloween
Halloween is a very important holiday for children who, in large part, have been forced to grow up too fast and to forego creative play. The Sunday Friends Foundation works with numerous groups to outfit every child in need, and we have always collected enough costumes to spread to community shelters. We throw our best party of the year, offering magic potion mixing, scarecrow construction, photos, and more. Click here for more information about Halloween Activities at Sunday Friends.

10 Ways to be a Better Dad
Ten Things Every Father Needs to Know ... And Do!
Spend Time With Your Children How a father spends his time tells his children what's important to him. If you always seem too busy for your children, they will feel neglected no matter what you say. Treasuring children often means sacrificing other things, but it is essential to spend time with your children. Kids grow up so quickly. Missed opportunities are lost forever. Earn The Right To Be Heard All too often the only time a father speaks to his children is when they have done something wrong. That's why so many children cringe when their mother says, "Your father wants to talk with you." Begin talking with your kids when they are very young so that difficult subjects will be easier to handle as they get older. Take time and listen to their ideas and problems.

Bring Your Fathers to School!
Just in time for Father's Day! A recent study reveals that a father's participation in in-school activities and events can have a significant impact on his children's educational success. Read about the implications of that study and learn some things you can do to make every day Fathers' Day at your school. Research has long confirmed that parental involvement is crucial to a child's success in school. However, most of that research has focused on parents as a single unit and has usually failed to distinguish between the individual influences of mothers and fathers. Now, the recently-released study, Fathers' Involvement in Their Children's Schools , reveals that children whose fathers participate in classroom activities and school meetings and events receive higher grades, enjoy school more, and are more likely to participate in extracurricular activities than children whose fathers don't participate regardless of the level of maternal participation. "This study provides hard evidence about the powerful and positive influence that parents can have as full and equal partners when they make the commitment to help their children get a good education," Vice President Gore said. "Fathers matter a great deal when it comes to helping their children succeed in school and this study should encourage millions of American fathers to step up to the plate and make a difference in their children's education."

Upcoming Events on the Calendar : June
The "Month of Perfect Days"
June has topical items of interest any teacher can use in the classroom: birthdays, historical events, special days like Flag Day and Fathers Daythe possibilities are almost endless!
Give some of these June ideas a try.
Check with a local meteorologist. Does June have the best days of any month in the region where you live? If so, ask why weather is better in June than other months.
June often appears in poems and songs because it rhymes with so many other words. Brainstorm a class list of words that rhyme with June. For centuries, June has been associated with weddings. It is said that this came about because, since the preceding month was observed for "the unhappy dead," May was considered unlucky for marriages, so weddings usually were postponed until June, and the custom continues. 1) Make a class list of reasons why people might choose June for their wedding. Poll family members and friends for their ideas too; 2) Weddings cost a lot of money. Many people specialize in businesses that supply services and planning for weddings. Ask a person in the business to talk to your class about the planning and costs involved in weddings;

Mama
As Mothers Day approaches, my thoughts turn towards your way,
Wishing I could be there just so that I could say ...
You mean so much to me mom - with all you say and do,
For everything I have achieved, was inspired by Love from you ! You were there right from the start to teach me as I grew.
You gave me love and encouragement, But you knew when to scold me too !
I use to think you were too harsh, when you got down on my case,
But now I know you showed me Love, and taught me of God's grace ! I'd like to take this special day - To Thank You for what you've done,
And all the help that you have been - to so many little ones !
Your house has been a home to more than the children that you bore,
You listened when you heard God's call and knew what he called you for ! They didn't have to be yours, for you to love them too, The only thing they had to do - was have a need for you. I realized in my thoughts today - How Lucky I Must Be ! That You are my real Mother, and You're always there for Me !!!

Father’s Day
How Father’s Day Began
A woman, Mrs. Sonora Dodd of Spokane Washington, first proposed the idea of a Father’s Day in 1909. Her own father, Civil War veteran William Smart, had lost his wife when she died during childbirth to their sixth child. Alone with a new infant and five young children, William Smart, raised them all on his own. As an adult Sonora Dodd was inspired to help create a day to honor fathers as she listened to a sermon about Mother’s Day. The first Father’s Day was observed one year later on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington. In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported a National Father’s Day, but it wasn’t until 1966 that President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a proclamation declaring the third Sunday of every June as Father’s Day. [top] [home]
Traditions
Individual people and families celebrate Father’s Day in a variety of ways. The father of the family might be served breakfast in bed or be taken to a favorite sports game. Gifts are often given including a new tie, tools, or game equipment. Sometimes communities hold a pancake breakfast or picnic event for fathers and their offspring. Amusement parks, zoos, and shows can also be found giving free entrance to fathers if they are accompanied by their children.

Irreverent Commentary on the State of Education in America Today
by Dr. Mark H. Shapiro
"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray....." Matthew 6: 3-6 Commentary of the Day - June 23, 2001: Teach Me To Pray. Guest commentary by Tom Cordle. My Christian faith is tried to its limits more often by other Christians than by non-believers. That may be because I expect better of my Christian brothers. I guess it angers me that we often fight over such small things, like dogs with an old bone. Generosity of spirit–and everything else–is supposed to be the hallmark of the faith we all so freely profess. But far too often, Christians do not demonstrate a generosity of spirit; they demonstrate a desire to control the world and force it to believe as they do–or at least as they claim to. Recently I was deeply troubled to sit in church and listen to another sermon demanding prayer in schools. The sermon mentioned the tragedy at Columbine High School, intimating that had there been prayer in schools this would never have happened. Or that the posting of the much violated Ten Commandments somehow would have caused the two psychotic young men at Columbine to lay down their arms.

Many of you might know Alan from the Gay Fathers Coalition International. If you are a gay father, when you clicked on this page, you may have reacted the same way I (Alan) reacted at "Stonewall 10" in June, 1979 in New York City when I saw guys carrying signs for "Gay Daddies" and thought about my little boy in Philadelphia and how thrilled he would be to see such a fantastic and positive group of people celebrating the kinship that we share. I raced from the sidelines to join the Gay Daddies in the parade and I marched the rest of the way with their group. I made lots of new friends that day, including Al Luongo (from NYC), and determined that I would go back to Philadelphia and get a group started there. In less that one month, I had set up an ad in the Philadelphia Gay News (courtesy of Mark Segal, the publisher), received over 100 phone calls and started a local Gay Daddies group like the ones in New York. From the very beginning, the meetings were heartwarming, supportive and uplifting! Then, on Sunday, October 14, 1979, I went to Washington, DC and met Dave Berube (from Washington, DC) at the International March for Lesbian and Gay Rights. Al Luongo, Dave Berube and I arranged to hold the first meeting of a National Coalition in my apartment in Philadelphia.
