Felis Domesticus are the world's most popular pet, even surpassing their distant canine cousins. In America, there are 60 million cats gracing people with the privilege of their company. The newfound popularity of cats may be a result of society's changing lifestyles. People are busier than ever, and in most households both spouses work full time. While cats do require affection, they demand less attention than dogs, and are often happy on their own. Cats may become the ultimate pet for the information age. As we spend more of our time watching TV or surfing the Internet, a cat is perfectly content to just sit in your lap and sleep.

America's Rarely Seen Endangered Cats
Now Appearing in Unique Educational Presentation at Local Zoo
You've probably heard of an ocelot, but chances are you may never have seen one since there are less than 100 in the nation's zoos. Ocelots gained their fame during the height of the fur coat trade, but today more difficult issues like habitat fragmentation and development pose a more challenging threat. Caribbean Gardens: The ZOO in Naples is the most recent place where you can see these endangered felines and is also one of the very few zoos where you can see them in a presentation and learn what can be done to protect this animal so revered for its beauty. The zoo features these rare cats in its premiere educational program: Safari Canyon - a unique presentation combining live animals and video screens to better educate audiences. And if you ever wondered if all this time and effort is worth it, just ask the zoo's director of education, Tim Tetzlaff. Yes, he's David's brother and he shares David's enthusiasm for the shows. "The impact of seeing a live animal combined with interpretation by a live person cannot be overestimated. Our guests come for a fun time with their family, but they also want a connection to nature and to learn about this wild world. It's hard to get all of that when you're hanging out with your kids and seeing everything around you. Dave and I know that. We both have children and we visit zoos all the time with them. It's hard to read signs and take it all in. But sit everyone down for a show and you all get to relax and focus on what's in front of you. That's when you learn the most. And that's what really helps build the connection you came for."

For each variety of animal there is a corresponding animal lord. There is a fox lord, a bass lord, a mouse lord, a home lord, and hundreds of other animal lords. Animal lords can appear in two distinct forms: a human form and an animal form, In either form, each animal lord looks quite different. In humanoid form, they look much like a human man or woman but with subtle features of the animal in question. In this form, they are of standard size, about 6 feet tall. In animal form, they look like the animal over which they exercise dominion. The tiger lord will look like a sleek, beautiful tiger, the badger lord will appear as a badger, etc.

What a pretty kitty!
The Invasive Species Specialist Group of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) has recently published a list of the world's 100 worst invasive alien species ( www.issg.org ) and, strange as it may seem to some readers, the cat is among those animals included. The domestic cat is descended from the Eurasian wild cat and became tame in prehistoric times. Feral cats, i.e. those that do not depend on man for their survival, have been responsible for the extinction or depletion in numbers of countless animal species, especially birds and reptiles, in numerous islands across the world. On many occasions, they have been introduced either as a pet or to control plagues of rodents, but in the majority of cases, the result has been catastrophic for those island species which had evolved in the absence of predators. In some cases, the situation has become so extreme that governments of countries such as New Zealand, Australia and the United States, to name but a few, have been forced to develop intensive programmes for controlling and eradicating cat populations by means of traps, powerful poisons and even by propagating specific feline infectious diseases. The negative effect of cats on the native fauna of many islands is compounded by the changes to habitats caused by herbivore activity (animals such as goats, rabbits, etc.), introduced plants and, in the worst of cases, by the presence of rats. Some sadly famous examples include that of the wren of Stephen Island (New Zealand) and the black robin native to the Chatham Islands. The Stephen Island wren was a flightless bird whose numbers had been decimated by the Polynesian rat but its definitive extinction was largely due to the cat of the island's lighthouse-keeper in 1894. In the second case, cats were introduced by Europeans in the 19th century to control rabbit populations in Mangere Island but they ended up exterminating 12 bird species, including the black robin.

by Grayce Pedulla Dillon Having that ritual done, each of us filled our tiny hands with peanuts to feed the squirrels. Tap, tap, tap , we would knock on the ground to get their attention. We'd drop the treats just in front of us and remain very, very still while they gingerly approached. They would grab their gifts and cleverly maneuver the shell to get at the nut inside. We were enthralled at the entire performance. Next we happily skipped ahead to the deer herd enclosed in their fenced yard. We were convinced they belonged to that roly-poly, jolly guy who dressed in red. Of course we searched diligently for the most famous reindeer of all with the red nose. The only one to spot him for certain was (you guessed it) Dad. It was a thrill to get so close and to know the herd lived in the Bronx. Just a short run ahead was "the giant bird cage." It was very exciting to enter their world as a myriad of feathered creatures freely flew over our heads. What fascinated me also was the variety of birdcalls. Until this day I whistle to birds, mimicking their calls as I learned to do then. Some responded and came closer to examine us in wonder. One exhibit after another entertained us beyond our expectations. As many times as we visited we were never bored. There was always a new discovery and Dad enhanced it with his own shenanigans. He would skip along exhorting us to join him as he sang "Here we go gathering nuts and hay, nuts and hay, nuts and hay." We merrily skipped along singing, laughing, and eagerly anticipating the next stop of our tour.

Kathmandu Sunday November 17, 2002 Army has a new air truck now By Khim Ghale KATHMANDU, Nov 16 The Royal Nepal Army (RNA) has purchased an air-truck from a Poland-based aircraft manufacturer. The brand new aircraft, which landed in the capital last week, is expected to aid security forces fighting Maoists insurgency in the country. The STOL (short take and landing) aircraft, which can land in almost every airport around the country, will be used to transport logistics and the security forces, highly-placed security sources told The Sunday Post. The twin-engine aircraft, which can fly in all temperature conditions, was brought in Nepal by the American Air Force last week, according to the sources. Although the aircraft has a much higher pricetag, the RNA purchased it in a subsidised rate of US $ 40,000, the sources claimed. "Because we are the first South Asian party to buy the aircraft, the company offered us the subsidy," one RNA official told The Sunday Post. The small-sized, aircraft has 17 seats for ‘para-dropping’ and 20 seats for ‘ordinary passengers or security persons’. "It’s very light and will be very handy," an official said.

The Andean mountain cat ( Oreailurus jacobita ) is a small, little known inhabitant of the arid Andes highlands. CAT sponsored surveys in the four range states: Argentina, Bolivia and Chile and Peru are improving our understanding of the species' geographic range and confirming its rarity. The Andean mountain cat has been upgraded from Vulnerable to Endangered status on the 2002 IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals.

    Margays
These photos are of margays. These cats are aboreal. This means they spend most of their time in the trees. They have flexible ankle joints that can rotate 180 degrees outward. Only one other cat has this feature, the Clouded Leopard from Indonesia. Because of this feature the margay is able to descend a tree head first, while most cats back down, then jump when close enough to the ground. They can also hang from tree limbs by one hind foot. They are very fast and even during a fall they can grab a hold of a branch with one hind paw and climb up again. Margays can hunt, sleep and have their young in trees. Their tails are very long and they have very large eyes. They look very similar to a baby Ocelot. Go to margays1 and to see photos that I took of Rustin and Maggie together! Photo by Jennifer Chavez Cat health has been a priority to the Foundation since early in its history. Dr. Morris was one of the first to use the term "companion animal" and to recognize cats in that realm. Early feline studies focused on nutrition and metabolism. Dr. Sanford Miller at Rutgers University was one of the first scientists awarded a Foundation grant to study "Protein Utilization in the Cat."
Initial studies identified feline viruses, the detrimental affects of aspirin in cats, and urinary disorders. Other studies delved into the study of the immune system and feline leukemia. Morris Animal Foundation-funded feline health studies have contributed to many profound feline health accomplishments. Notably:
