THE JAGUAR.
Jaguars are only found in the Americas.
Jaguars were historically found from the southwestern United States to southern Argentina. Its range is now reduced; Jaguars have lost over 50% of their range since 1900.
Most of the loss has occurred in Mexico and the United States in the north, and in Brazil and Argentina in the south. The largest contiguous area of jaguar range is centered in the Amazon Basin and includes adjoining areas in the Cerrado, Pantanal, and Chaco to the south and extending to the Caribbean coast in Venezuela and the Guianas. Please help save the Jaguar before the extinct.

Fabulous Felines of the Wild Kind!
Dunlap, CA
Crazy about cats? Well, the most fabulous of the felines have some great advocates who are working at education, and habitat conservation, and they just opened a specialty zoo. Some of the rarest of the rare can be seen at the Sierra Endangered Cat Haven (SECH)in Dunlap, California.
You are probably asking, "Where the heck is Dunlap, California?" It is the same question, Ark Animal's Director Diana Guerrero asked when she first met the team of professionals at the Feline Taxon Advisory Group (TAG) Meeting not too long ago.* After years of planning, the zoo opened to the public for Memorial Weekend 1998.
Since that time, Guerrero attended their official Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting and just recently returned from their first fund-raiser. The fund-raiser was put on by Project Survival (PS), the 501(c)3 support arm associated with the SECH. They focus their efforts on projects affecting the fabulous felines and their habitats.
The fundraising event had an Arabian Nights theme and was attended by about 100 of the most intimate friends and supporters of the Sierra Endangered Cat Haven and Project Survival. Cam-Lo the clouded leopard attended the event and as usual, stole the hearts and attention of most of the animal lovers attending. If you would like to help endangered cats or to visit the Sierra Endangered Cat Haven, contact them directly at (559)338-3216.

AMUR LEOPARDS
The Amur Leopard is considered critically endangered with approximately 30-50 left in the wild. This is due to poaching for their fur and body parts as well as habitat encroachment. They are from the Amur River Region of Russia near the borders of N.Korea and China. For the latest information on them in the wild and how you can help go to Tigris-updates. There are 9 genetically diverse Amur leopards at FCC. They currently have the most genetically diverse captive colony in the world. ...

Left:This is Katia at 8 months old. Right:This is Katia and her mom when she was 7 months old. Aijka (mom) is an offspring from one that was caught in the wild. That makes her a half captive/half wild bloodline. In some cases, instead of shooting a troublesome leopard in the wild they will tranquilize it and send it to a zoo. This is a good thing since there is always a need for new bloodlines in order to keep the species in captivity purebred. That makes Aijka a very important addition to the captive population.

No other animal captures the image of strength and majesty like the lion. Thousands of years ago, these powerful felines were found from the Mediterranean to India. Today the "king of beasts" is largely restricted to Africa, south of the Sahara desert, where some live in the woodlands and savannas of protected reserves. Like all cats, the lion is a muscular hunting machine. Unlike the cheetah, the lion is built for strength, not speed. A male lion often weighs between 160 and 180 kilograms (350 to 400 pounds) and is 3 meters (10 feet) long, including the tail. The female lion weighs about 150 kilograms (330 pounds). The shoulder and forelegs are well developed, enabling lions to clutch prey and pull it to the ground. If its prey is small, the lion may bite through the skull or neck with its powerful jaws. Larger animals (like the zebra or wildebeest-the lion's preferred prey) are usually strangled with a throat bite. Of its 30 teeth, the four canine teeth are used to hold and puncture, while the four

B IG C ATS THE BIG CATS-FELINES AT RISK The big cats of the world (family Felidae) include the Lion, Tiger, Leopard, Jaguar, Snow Leopard, Clouded Leopard, and Cheetah. With the exception of the African Lion, all of these magnificent animals are highly endangered, or threatened, in the wild. While serious efforts are being made to develop captive breeding programs, to insure the long term survival of these great cats, the success of their survival in the wild is hindered by a complex set of political, economic, and environmental issues. The Lion (Panthera leo) that we often see on African safaris, and in the movies, is the Masai subspecies and is holding its own in the wild, possibly due to its complex social structure. Rather than living alone, as do most other big cats when they are not mating or raising young, the Masai Lion lives in a pride environment headed by a senior adult male lion and includes subadult males, females, and cubs. They hunt cooperatively, raise and protect the cubs as a family, and live on the open grasslands of the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem in east Africa, one of the richest wildlife habitats on earth. They follow the millions of migrating wildebeest through this government protected ecosystem and, thus, have an extensive prey base available. With hyena packs, and a limited number of Masai natives as their only serious competitors, they enjoy a combination of positive circumstances which offer them a higher probability of survival.

Suggested Guidelines for
Feral Cat Colony Caretakers
Am I ready for this Responsibility?

They're hungry, they're breeding, they may be ill or injured. This is the scene that many people come upon BEFORE humans intervene in a feral cat "colony". A "colony" is the term used to describe a group of unowned, wild cats. Feeding is the first step in caring for feral cats, but certainly not the ONLY step and not even the most important step!
Before supplying food to feral cats and/or kittens, you should consider the following questions.
  • Are you willing/able to make a long term (lifetime) commitment to these cats?
  • Do you have the financial means to commit to these cats? (Food, spay/neuter, medical attention, if necessary)
  • Is this a safe place for a colony of cats to exist?
  • If you are not the property owner, do you have permission from the property owner to feed/water and maintain the cats on the premises? (Is the property owner aware of this long term commitment?)
  • If you plan on moving in the future, are you prepared to find someone to take over the care of your colony? (Are they aware of this long term commitment?)

Ten Steps to Trapping and Altering Your Feral Cats Thank you for assuming the responsibility to trap and neuter your feral colony. Forgotten Felines has a limited source of manpower and your own efforts will make a critical difference in helping us to control the feral cat population. A neutered colony is a happy colony!
    IMPORTANT NOTES

Please plan what you are going to do with the cat you are trapping BEFORE you trap. Your plan should be one of the following:
  • Trap and take the cat to your veterinarian for neutering, vaccinations, ear tipping and necessary health care. Be sure to tell the vet to use stitches which will dissolve, that the animal is wild, and ask them to tip the ear. Take a pet carrier (large enough to hold the cat laid out) to the vet's office with you. Ask the vet to transfer the cat into the carrier after surgery for recovery. You will transport the cat home in the carrier. The carrier will be more comfortable for the cat if you need to care for the cat between the time it leaves the vet and its release to your property to be cared for, fed and watered daily. Be sure to make appointment and arrangements with your vet BEFORE you trap.

    THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE

Thousands of feral cats roam neighborhoods throughout the Salt Lake Valley. They yowl. They fight. They leave odoriferous gifts in gardens and flower boxes. And they multiply. Boy, do they multiply.
Some harried homeowners would like nothing more than to see these mangy critters wiped out the sooner the better.
But many animal experts warn that sooner isn't better.
Since feral cats live in colonies, if some are trapped and sent to shelters to be euthanized, more inevitably move in to fill the void. It seems to be nature's way.
So a better approach, experts argue, is to trap, sterilize and return the animals to their colonies. This keeps the population in balance. However, new litters are significantly reduced or eliminated altogether. Eventually, the colonies die out.
Yes, it takes time. Feral cats prone to disease and injury generally live about five to seven years. But at least spayed females are not producing two to four litters a year with four to eight kittens in each.
