Helping wild populations is very important. Still, we cannot let the success or failure of species preservation rest on in-situ efforts alone given the growing destruction of habitat, poaching, decline of biodiversity, and ever encroaching human population. Every 20 minutes, the world adds another 3,500 human lives but loses one or more entire species of animal or plant life. Zoo breeding programs certainly help, but with limited space and rising costs, zoos are not well suited to the preservation of many species. HOW WE CAN HELP: Since nature preserves and zoos are not enough, it is vital that we create a cooperative network of responsible, knowledgeable, mini-sanctuaries within the private sector. Without a lot of help from responsible private caretakers, sooner or later there will be calls for drastic, last ditch measures to preserve whatever small gene pools remain until "better" strategies can be developed. By then it may be too late. Such last ditch efforts will result in small, isolated genetic islands without the strength to continue a healthy species. There would be no going back.

Only "qualified, trained professionals"should keep large wild cats, the USDA wrote, citing the experiences of its inspectors in the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. "[Animal care] personnel have seen too many instances where wild and exotic cats kept by untrained people have not only harmed people but suffered themselves due to poor care,"said the agency, which issued the statement at a press conference during The HSUS's Animal Care Expo 2000 in Las Vegas. This cat though, doesn’t come running like the cat at my house. This cat wants nothing to do with any human. He’s feral, probably born in the wild and unaccustomed to contact with humans. Living as wild, this cat has to contend with disease, predators, and starvation. His life would probably be difficult, painful and short if he didn’t have friends. Fortunately for this cat and many more like him, he has help from Friends of Feral Felines, a small group of people trying to improve the lives of feral cats in Southern Maine Mike Chase feeds feral cats on Portland's waterfront Mike is one of a dozen or so people who take turns feeding the cats in several locations on Portland’s waterfront. Every two weeks, when his turn comes up, Mike leaves a couple of cans of wet food, a bowl of dry food and a bowl full of fresh water down for the cats who stay in the bushes or amid the lobster traps until he moves away. Shipping palettes and underbrush shelter the bowls. "It keeps the seagulls away." Mike explains, "The cats are afraid of them." Friends of Feral Felines got their start one day in 1992 when Jill Cournoyer spied a group of kittens behind Jay’s Oyster Bar in Portland, "It was Friday, and that weekend we received torrential rains. My thoughts all weekend were with the young kittens, as I shuddered imagining how they were faring." The following Monday, Jill mentioned them to a co-worker who knew a woman who fed the waterfront cats. With help from yet another woman experienced in cat rescue, Jill and her friends began trapping the wild cats, arranging veterinary care and spaying and neutering the strays. They found homes for those that could be domesticated and released those that couldn’t.

Feline Species There are 36 species of wild cats. In early March 1996 the Felid TAG (Taxonomic Advisory Group) had a conference. At this meeting a revised felid taxonomy was officially agreed to. As you may have noticed in the past, many different books gave different taxonomies - for example, the snow leopard being in 'panthera' or 'uncia', all small cats being 'felis' vs many different small cat genera, etc. The new taxonomy agreed to basically divides the former Felis and Panthera groups into 13 and 4 genera respectively, for a total of 18 genera (13 in the Felidae subfamily, 4 in the Pantherinae subfamily, and 1 in the Acinonychinae subfamily). There are still 36 species (the Iriomote cat is officially a subspecies of Leopard cat, and the Canadian, Eurasian, and Iberian Lynxes are officially different species, not subspecies). Most species are further divided into subspecies, based on physical distinction and/or geographic separation. I have only gone into detail about the leopard subspecies, as these groupings are fairly well agreed upon. Most cat species' subspeciation is a topic of debate. Separate pages for some of the species below describes their IUCN (World Conservation Union) Red List status. The Red List takes into account overall world-wide populations, so even if a cat is endangered in one country or state, as a species it may not be listed as endangered. Tickets for the special exhibition are included with museum general admission. Cats! Wild to Mild traces the history of cats from wild, exotic felines to America’s number one pet. Visitors will explore feline science, myth, responsible pet care, and endangerment and conservation issues of wild cats through interactive displays, photo murals, dioramas, text panels, and more than 25 taxidermied animals. All of the animals died of natural causes; none were specifically collected for the exhibit. Among the specimens are the snow leopard, tiger, jaguar, lion, bobcat, lynx, ocelot, mountain lion, serval, marbled cat, caracal, margay, and the wild cat ancestor of today’s modern domestic cat. In total, visitors will learn about 35 species of exotic felines and 36 breeds of domestic cats. "We’re bringing "Cats" to the museum because the exhibit addresses important concepts of species diversity, habitat conservation, and responsible interactions between humans and animals, all in the context of animals that our visitors are familiar with and enjoy," said Robert McKernan, San Bernardino County Museum Director. "Cats, both large and small, have been part of the southern California region since prehistoric times.
