Fencing

Fencing has been in existence for more than 3,000 years and has been an Olympic sport since the first modern Olympics in 1896.
There are three types of duels. They are the sabre, foil and epee. Each differs in scoring, style of fencing and swords.
  • Individual competition
Each bout consists of three three-minute periods with one-minute breaks between each. The first fencer to score 15 hits, or the fencer with the most hits when time expires, wins the bout.
  • Team competition There are three fencers to a team. Each bout is worth five points. The first team with 45 points wins the competition.
Glossary
  • En garde: The position taken before the match begins. Feint: A false attack used to elicit a response from the opponent. Fleche: A running attack. Lunge: An attacking move in which the fencer moves front leg forward and keeps back leg planted. Parry: A defensive move in which the fencer blocks the opponent's blade.

liff Bayer's fencing coach rarely let him forget the exquisite timing and savvy ruses that make Sergei Goloubitski the world's premier foilist and an Olympic gold medal favorite. Yefim Litvan's praise of Goloubitski, a fellow Ukrainian, sounded to Bayer more like taunting than motivation. "It was like taking a knife and throwing it into my side," Bayer, 23, said recently in the basement training room of the New York Athletic Club. "During a lesson he'd say, 'Do like Sergei does; watch a tape of Sergei.' He was always relating to him like a godlike character." That is, until last August, when Bayer faced Goloubitski in the quarterfinals of a World Cup fencing tournament in St. Petersburg, Russia. It was their first encounter since Goloubitski trounced Bayer, then a junior, six years before. "He wins a lot with sheer intimidation," Bayer said. "He makes good fencers look like children because of his tricks. He sets up his opponents very well. He has a lot of patience. But when he started his mind games, I didn't listen, which is what he doesn't want you to do."

It's almost time for Olympic Fever. The kids will barely be back in school when from September 15 to October 1, 2000, most of us will be glued to our television sets, watching the games taking place in Sydney, Australia.
The 2000 Summer Olympic Competition events fall within the following categories:
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon
    Debut Sport: Trampoline
    Individual: Men Only
    Individual: Women Only
Team Events: Men Only Team Events: Women Only Team Events: Men and Women Equestrian Debut Sport: Triathlon Featured Competition: Rowing
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon This event isn't for slackers. It also helps if you're a morning person, too. Competition starts at 5:30 A.M. with a pistol shoot at a bull's-eye target 10 meters away. After that, there's the dueling and fencing for "first blood," where a single touch wins. Then it's on to the pool, where competitors swim a 200-meter sprint; stroke style is each competitor's choice. Without even taking time to dry off, competitors head to the equestrian arena where they each coax an unfamiliar horse around and over a course of fences. Then, after "resting" atop that horse for a bit, there's a final, two-mile cross-country run. The entire competition takes about 12 hours.

From Fetzer To Finley: Carolina's Olympic Sports Have Done It All This Year UNC looks to clinch Carlyle Cup Sunday.
April 20, 2002 By Dave Lohse
    Associate Athletic Communications Director
Chalk up the 2001-02 athletic year as another sterling one for the Olympic sports program at the University of North Carolina. As the spring sports season begins its transition from conference championship to NCAA championship phase in the next few weeks Carolina's excellence has become abundantly clear once again. On Saturday, the Tar Heels' women's outdoor track and field team won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship, giving UNC four league titles this school year. Three more Tar Heel teams will be in ACC championship matches on Sunday in women's lacrosse versus Maryland, men's tennis versus Georgia Tech and women's tennis versus Duke. In addition to women's outdoor track and field, Carolina has also won ACC titles this year in women's soccer, volleyball and women's swimming and diving. Carolina is bidding this year to lead or share the lead in the number of ACC titles won for the 15th successive year. The last time any school won more conference championships in a single school year than Carolina was 1986-87. Wow! With the Sears Directors' Cup standings set to be updated again this coming Thursday, the Tar Heel athletic program currently stands a solid second in this year's rankings and barring a complete collapse in the spring, which appears highly unlikely, the Tar Heels are destined for a Top Five finish with a great chance to finish as high as second.

    Fencing
The art of swordsmanship has been practiced since Biblical times and has evolved through the ages from deadly combat to an Olympic sport. Trigger-fast reflexes and a quick mind are needed to be able to strike a competitor without being struck. Three swords are used in fencing competitions: the "foil," the "epee" (pronounced epp-ay), and the "sabre." Individual and team competitions are held for each.

    Scoring
In a fencing bout, the objective is to touch your opponent with your sword. Fencers battle on a "strip" which is a mat 45.9 feet long and 6.5 feet wide. At opposite ends of the strip are two light towers. When one fencer strikes another, the point of the weapon is depressed. This sends a signal to the light tower that triggers the light to flash, indicating a touch. A flashing red or green light means that a point has landed in a valid target area on the fencer nearest to the flashing tower. The official, known as the "director," must confirm the touch before it counts. Each touch is worth one point, and the fencer who reaches 15 points first wins the bout. For a team bout, the goal is to be the first team to score 45 points.
