Students will learn in which country a sport originated, where the country is located, and which animal could be considered an Olympian in that sport. MATERIALS
  • world map
    research materials
BACKGROUND
Some sports originate in one country while others are a combination of several sports stemming from different countries. Olympic sports that can be traced to one country include soccer and hockey (Great Britain), basketball and volleyball (U.S.A.), fencing (Egypt), judo (Japan), and shooting (Switzerland). Olympic handball is a combination of games from three countries: Czechoslovakia, Germany, and Denmark. ACTION 2. Have students research their sport, finding a description of the sport and its country of origin. Students who chose the same sport may work in groups, deciding among themselves how the research should be divided. 3. Hang a world map on the wall. On the map, ask each student or group to label the country in which their sport originated, and describe the sport to their classmates. DEEPER DEPTHS
Have students research an animal that would qualify as an animal Olympian in their chosen sport. Using the Olympic Animal Athlete cards as an example, have them create their own card that can be copied and shared with classmates.

Before taking the reins of the Harvard program, Brand spent six years as the head men’s and women’s coach at Brown University and previously served as an assistant coach at MIT. At Brown, Brand guided a successful program that regularly sent qualifiers to the NCAA National Championships, including three members of his 1998-99 team. He coached the Bears’ women’s team to a pair of New England championships (1994 and 1995), while the men’s squad captured the 1993 New England title. Brand was the Northeast Collegiate Fencing Conference’s 1994-95 Coach of the Year. While at MIT, he also gave private lessons and one of his students, Peter Cox, was selected to the 1996 United States Olympic Team.

The Olympic Games were held every four years for more than 1,000 years, until a.d. 393, when a Roman emperor stopped them.
Some Modern Olympic Firsts The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece. A total of 312 athletes from 13 nations participated in nine sports. Women competed in the Olympic Games for the first time. For the first time, medals were awarded to the first three people to finish each event The Olympic flag was raised for the first time, and the Olympic oath was introduced. The five interlaced rings of the flag represent: Africa, America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The first Winter Olympics, featuring skiing and skating events, were held. The Olympic flame was introduced at the Olympic Games. A relay of runners carries a torch with the flame from Olympia, Greece, to the site of each Olympics. Starting with the 1994 Winter Olympics, the winter and summer Games have been held two years apart, instead of in the same year.

The expanded competition was announced today by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) which has committed $3 million to stage the five day event from the 8 th th of January 2003. "Our first Olympic Festival in 2001 was a resounding success and more sports have been added this time round" said AOC Secretary General Bob Elphinston. "Such is the popularity of the AYOF 25 of the 28 summer Sports Federations wanted to participate and ultimately the AOC would like to include them all" he said. The new sports added to the 2003 program are Archery, Badminton, Fencing, Judo, Shooting, Softball, Table Tennis, Tae Kwon Do, Water Polo, Weightlifting and Wrestling, "Badminton, Fencing, Judo and Wrestling are sports where we are less developed and looking to improve" Elphinston said. The AOC has invited all countries from the East Asian Region and it’s expected Australia’s future Olympians will compete against teams from China, Japan and South Korea. "These countries are the world super powers in many of those disciplines," he said.

Benslimane puts Greenville on cutting edge with fencing nationals
    By Ann Green
    STAFF WRITER
    agreen@greenvillenews.com

Staff Ask local fencer Daniel Duncan why he decided to attend Furman University this fall and two words quickly pass his lips: Wari Benslimane.
Benslimane isn't a beloved professor at Furman, and he doesn't run a ground-breaking research program. Rather, the Algeria native teaches fencing in an upstairs studio on campus.
It was at Furman in 1995 that Lahouari "Wari" Benslimane, a newcomer to this country, began to wage a one-man campaign to stir interest in fencing in the Upstate. "He's the best," said Duncan, 18, one of Benslimane's converts and the 2002 state champion in the 19-under division of epee. "I decided to go to college at Furman partially so I could continue working with him," said Duncan, who just graduated from Greenville High. Today as the United States, a nation of immigrants, celebrates its birthday, Benslimane is living out the American dream, putting his talent and intelligence to work and making his adopted city better in the process.

USOC Teams with SGMA on Olympic Sports Web Page
NORTH PALM BEACH, FL (November 4, 1996) The U.S. Olympic Committee and the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association's Athletic Footwear Association (AFA) have joined forces to develop a unique Internet site that will serve as a guide to non-traditional sports. The AFA will work in conjunction with the USOC to provide more in-depth information for non-traditional sports in its existing "Sport-by Sport" area including, but not limited to, wrestling, team handball, badminton, fencing, tennis, kayaking, canoeing and cross-country skiing. "Through our participation studies, we've found that a great number of our young people quit sports at the middle school level, because that's when sports become varsity activities rather than fun things to do at recess," commented AFA executive director Gregg Hartley after announcing the program. "We wanted to raise their awareness of other potential sports, and we intend this innovative site will aid in that effort." The site will include a self-administered skills evaluation exercise, said Jim Page, the USOC's deputy executive director for programs. "Once individuals have determined their physical Îskills IQ' they can use that information to search through a database of information on each sport to determine which might be the best for them."
