The sport of Olympic fencing
The sport of fencing is experiencing a nationwide revival. This effort comes on the heels of a recent attempt to ban the sport form Olympic competition. The sport has also suffered from an image problem of late. Many Americans have classified the sport as violent and elitist. Ironically, fencing was one of the original nine sports in the inaugural modern Olympic Games played in Athens, Greece in 1896. It is one of only four sports that has been featured at every single Olympic competition since 1896. bodyOffer(25185) The reputation as a violent elitist sport has foiled fencers, who deem the sport a game of physical chess, a tactical masterpiece of grace and prowess that harkens own back through the annals of history, where the sport originated in ancient Egypt to where it reached its heyday in Elizabethan England. Fencing advocates also argue that fencing equipment is less expensive than hockey or football gear, and is less violent than both of the aforementioned sports. The sport of fencing incorporates agility, strength, coordination, balance, timing, and strength. In fencing, physical ability is just as important is having a strong mental edge.

I live in Paris now, but will probably return home to New York City (...birthplace..of ME!) at some point. Being here has been a great experience since its given me the chance to compete against some of the world's best fencers, something other Americans dont have the chance to do back in the States When I grew up in New York, fencing was not something that was thought of as a sport. I was told bedtime stories about King Arthur and immediately took a shine to that notion of chivalry and romance. When I was 3 I saw "Ivanhoe" With Robert Taylor and Elizabeth Taylor. I decided then that I wanted to be a knight. The teachers at school a few years later didn't appreciate the notion that I wanted to knock other people off their horses, slay the dragon and rescue the damsel in distress. My mother patiently explained to me that I couldn't do that and I suppose I took it well. A few years later, I saw my first Errol Flynn movie. I was astounded: this was even better than being a knight: no horse, no armor, just a blade and all the swashbuckling I could ask for. I didn't play 'cops and robbers' with my friends and brothers. It was usually 'robin hood', 'peter pan' or 'the king's muskateers and the cardinal's guards.' I always had an interest in swordplay even though it really didn't occur to me to learn.

FENCING
The Worlds Oldest Modern Sport
When most Americans think of swordplay, the images that come to mind are either of the lumbering power of armor-clad knights battling with broadswords, or of the swashbuckling flair of Errol Flynn and other screen duelers of the '30s and '40s. In what it requires and how it is conducted, Olympic fencing resembles these two clichés about as much as this summer's Opening Ceremony will call to mind the ritual sacrifice of animals that once signalled the start of competition. The modern Olympic fencer trains for years, honing agility, quickness, and subtlety of movement. The sport has been described as "chess with muscles," suggesting that complicated strategy lies behind the thrusts and parries that punctuate a duel. Fencers of today employ a strange combination of archaic and modern customs; combatants still salute before a match and wear the traditional white uniforms and masks, but scoring is now determined by electronic padding worn by the combatants that registers when a hit takes place with flashing, color-coded lights. As suggested by the continuing power of the myths of swordfighting knights and adventurers, the fencing tradition is rich and storied. Like fellow Olympic sports archery and javelin, fencing has its roots in ancient combat. Around 1200 BC, the Egyptians began the custom of fencing for sport, as seen by images in decorative reliefs from that period depicting knobs on the end of weapons, earflaps and other protective garb. Sword craftsmanship evolved through the ages, from the short, wide swords favored by the Greeks and Romans to the heavy two-handed broadswords in vogue during the age of chivalry. After the advent of gunpowder and firearms, armor became obsolete and lighter swords gained popularity as the sidearm of choice for European officers and gentlemen.

Dumb Olympic Sports
Rollerskating, ballroom dancing and water skiing could be events you see at future Olympic Games. You may also see tug-of-war, sumo wrestling and even chess. All of these are activities which the people who organize the Olympics consider to be "sports", and are thinking about adding to future Olympic competitions. Gimme a break. There are already enough lame sports at the Olympics. They don't need to add more sports; they need to get rid of some. Why do they even have fencing or shooting events? These are not sporting events, they are methods of murder. The same goes for synchronized swimming. If you have to put on make-up and get judged based on how much you smile - then it's not a sport (and it is possible to be bored to death by synchronized swimming!) What are they gonna add next? Modeling and hair styling ? I guess that way Anna Kournikova could finally say she's a winning athlete and not just some hot babe with a nice racket. The IOC (International Olympic Committee) did have enough brains to decide that bodybuilding is not a sport (it's actually defined as a circus act or a freak exhibit) - but the organization has given status to too many other activities that should really be classified as hobbies or "things I do when I'm really bored," (synchronized swimming not being one of them!)

From Fetzer to Finley: A Look at Issues Important to Carolina's Olympic Sports Carolina Men's Tennis Team Has Been the Surprise of the Spring April 10, 2000 By Dave Lohse, Director of Media Relations for Olympic Sports A year ago about this time someone said to Sam Paul, "You know, there are a lot of people out there who don't think you're the right man for this job." I wonder where those folks are now. The news about the men's tennis team at North Carolina has been buried behind the Tar Heels' run to the Final Four, the late season resurgence of the women's basketball squad, the excitement of spring football under a new offensive staff and a baseball team which started out the season 21-0. But as Atlantic Coast Conference championship competition for spring sports begins this weekend with the women's golf championship in Clemmons Friday through Saturday, it is Sam Paul's men's tennis, which is quietly making the most noise amongst Tar Heel teams.
