Academic-Athletic Fellows Linking Athletics And Academics The integration of athletics and academics is a challenge at any university or college. Academic integrity-or the lack of such integrity-is at the forefront at many institutions. A recent Princeton Board of Trustees report acknowledged that athletics is a valuable resource and reinforced that athletics is an important component of the educational experience. In an attempt to strengthen the true student-athlete ideal while continuing to preserve and advance the University's overall educational mission, the Department of Athletics launched the Princeton Academic-Athletic Fellows initiative in the spring. The coach of each varsity team is required to identify a faculty member who will serve as its academic-athletic fellow. Their mission is to strengthen and reinforce the ties between a student's academic and athletic pursuits and act as a resource for the student-athletes, coaches, academic administrators and faculty. The creation of the academic-athletic fellows initiative was conceived by director of athletics Gary Walters, who recalls how an experience from his days as a Princeton student-athlete impacted him and his teammates.

Mr. Smith Just Wants to Help Navigating NCAA and IVY Group Rules as a Booster Most rules violations in college athletics are committed by well-intentioned people who believe their actions will only reap positive results for the program. However, a positive outcome does not necessarily make the activity permissible under NCAA and Ivy Group rules. Knowledge of rules is the key to maintaining the integrity of Princeton University and protecting the eligibility of our student-athletes. When in doubt, ask before you act. The NCAA considers you a representative of athletics interests if you: 1) participated in or have been a member of any of Princeton's various athletics Friends Groups, 2) make or have made a donation to any of Princeton's men's and women's athletics programs, 3) provide or have helped arrange summer employment for enrolled student-athletes, 4) have been involved in promoting Princeton Athletics in any way, i.e., recruitment of prospects, 5) are the parent of an enrolled student-athlete. The following hypothetical situations provide some examples of the most commonly broken rules for representatives of athletics interests and their involvement with prospects and enrolled student-athletes. (Note: A prospect is any student who has started classes for the ninth grade.)

THE CHARTERING PROCESS

Chartering begins in the Student Union Office with a set of guidelines, which contain an explanation sheet, the official rules and regulations, and sample charter. Once a charter is submitted to the Student Union, it is sent through three areas of approval: Student Senate, Student Life Committee, and General Faculty. Once approved, the club will receive a letter and a copy of the signed (approved) charter from the Student Union, where the original charter is kept on file. Any changes to existing charters must go through the approval; process beginning in the Student Union.
ANNUAL CHARTER RENEWAL
Each Spring Semester, the Student Union sends a form, titled "Officer List" to the liaison of each organization. By completing and returning this form, complete with advisor’s signature, to the Student Union Office in the spring, your organization renews its charter for the following academic year. Change in Officers during the ensuing year need to be forwarded to the Student Union Office.
