Good Pet Care Is Important
to Human Health
Did you say "I love you" to your pet today? If so, you are not alone; 91 percent of pet owners have said those words to their pets at least once. Additionally, surveys indicate that 76 percent of pet owners feel guilty about leaving their pets alone at home. No doubt about it, animals are an important part of our lives. Almost 60 million American households include a companion animal, and while dogs and cats comprise the majority of the pet population, birds, ferrets, fish, horses, rabbits and an array of reptiles and rodents also deserve honorable mention. With pets playing such a big part in our daily lives, keeping them healthy can go a long way in keeping ourselves and our families healthy as well. Good health and sanitation rules at home for the protection of your family also should include important rules about pets to prevent passing some diseases and parasites from animals to humans. For example, wash pet dishes separately from your own and rinse with boiling water. Children should never kiss animals or share eating dishes with them. Any reptile tanks, fish bowls or bird cages should be placed out of reach of children. Always wash hands thoroughly with soap after handling pets, their dishes, cages or litter boxes. "It's also a good idea to learn first aid techniques and have some supplies on hand," said Pam Wilson, program specialist for the Zoonosis Control Division of the Texas Department of Health (TDH). "Learn about poisons and store them out of reach, and keep emergency veterinary telephone numbers handy."

Pet Care Tips:
Pets in Pockets
From the moment you hold a soft ball of fluff cupped in your hands, you're smitten. The nose twitches, the whiskers wiggle, and the eyes shine. A fragile, furry bundle of love has put its trust in you, and you have made a new best friend. Welcome to the world of pocket pets. Rabbits, hamsters, gerbils, rats, mice, guinea pigs, and ferrets are often called "pocket pets" because they are small, cute, and inexpensive. Their name is not meant to imply, however, that they're disposable or that they can be neglected. These small animals have specific diet, housing, and handling requirements, and they need care and attention just as much as a dog or cat. And if they're well cared for, they can also be just as much fun. No place like home
Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize
You can enrich your pet's environment and keep him comfortable and active with a number of accessories. A "hide box"a small box, tube, or other enclosed area where your pet can conceal himself-will make him feel safe and comfortable. Plastic tunnels, wheels, hollow rolling balls with latching lids, and other toys are available that can let your pet exercise. Make sure your pet is safe and can't get trapped inside or catch his feet or tail on a seam or a corner. Also make sure that the toys are made out of metal or durable plastic so your furry friend can't chew and ingest them. You can buy chewing blocks made out of wood or very dense pressed plant fibers for rodents. Rodents' teeth grow throughout their lifetimesthey chew constantly to keep their choppers filed down to a comfortable length.

Human/Animal Bond:
Ferret Fetish
Ferrets are fascinating creatures that have moved their way into more than 395,000 American households over the past several years according to a recent study by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Popular because of their small size, their playfulness, and their friendly disposition, ferrets can be great companions. They do however require a lot of care and supervised attention. Members of the Mustelidae family, ferrets are related to minks, polecats, weasels, and otters. It is believed that ferrets were domesticated 2,000 years ago in Europe when they were used for hunting small game or controlling rodents. Domestic ferrets should not be confused with the North American black-footed ferret, which is an endangered species. Choosing a ferret
Ferrets are very dependent upon their human companions for survival. Because ferrets require continuous care and supervision, potential owners should evaluate their ability to commit. The commitment is long term since the lifespan of ferrets is 6-10 years. Ferrets may not be the best pet for families with small children. Although ferrets are very social animals, they may bite or nip if mishandled. Never leave a ferret and a small child alone together. Ferrets generally get along with dogs and cats if they are introduced carefully, but they should not interact with birds, rodents, or small reptiles.

http://www.animalhospitals-usa.com/small_pets/ferrets.html
Ferrets The ferret ( Mustela putorius furo is a domestic pet. It is not a wild animal, though ferrets are descendants of the European polecat (weasel) and are, therefore, close relatives of skunks, mink, otters and badgers. Types and Terms: There are 2 varieties of ferrets, based on coloration. Fitch ferrets (the most popular) are buff-colored, with black masks, feet and tails. Albino ferrets are white, with pink eyes. The female ferret is called a "jill,” while the male is called a "hob." Babies are "kits." Physiology: The gestation period of ferrets is 42 to 44 days (average, 42 days). The average litter size is 8 (range, 2-17). Kits are born deaf, with their eyes closed. Their eyes open and they begin to hear between 3 and 5 weeks of age. Their deciduous ("temporary") teeth begin to erupt at 2 weeks of age, at which time they begin to eat solid food. Kits generally are weaned onto commercial kitten chow at around 8 weeks of age. Kits reach their adult weight at 4 months of age. Males are typically twice the size of females, but both sexes undergo periodic weight fluctuations. It is not uncommon for the average ferret to add 30-40% of its body weight in fat deposited beneath the skin in the fall, and lose this fat the following spring. The average lifespan of ferrets is 9-10 years. Home Dogs Cats Birds ... Ferrets were once an uncommon sight in most animal shelters, but now many
facilities have a separate cage or two set aside for these sociable creatures.
If you are considering having a ferret as a pet, please take the time to be
aware of the special needs of these domesticated weasels. Find an experienced
veterinarian who can perform initial health exams and provide ongoing medical
care. Review the tips below to provide your ferret with excellent care.
        1. Pick Out Some Furniture Ferrets' ancestors were den animals, so any temporary home you create should be like a den, too. Use a wire cage that's at least 18 inches long, 18 inches deep, and 30 inches wide. Many ferrets prefer bi-level cages that feature stairs or ramps that ferrets can climb, and shelves or hammocks where ferrets can perch. An ordinary cat cage will work in a pinch, but avoid aquariums, which provide poor ventilation. Because ferrets are accomplished escape artists, the cage should feature a secure

About Ferrets By Pamela Grant, STAR*Ferrets The History of Ferrets M ustela furo , the domestic European ferret, is a member of the weasel family (polecat, mink, ermine, otter, etc.). The first ferrets came to the United States over 300 years ago on ships and were used for rodent control.
There are no populations of "wild" ferrets in the United States, except for the North American Black-footed Ferret, which is an endangered species and just recently reintroduced to the wild. Pet ferrets have no hunting instinct left; they will chase and catch rodents, but don't know how to "survive" on them. Ferrets are domestic in the truest sense of the word. They come in a variety of colors, with albino being the original color of pet ferrets. Other popular colors are sable (with raccoon-like mask), chocolate (brown), silver (white with sprinkling of black hairs and black eyes), and cinnamon (just to name a few colors). Patterns are mitts (white feet), panda (white head), badger (white blaze), and Siamese (dark legs and tail). Male ferrets are referred to as hobs and average from 2 to 5 pounds. Female ferrets are called jills and are half the size of the males. Baby ferrets are called kits and are considered "adults" at 6-7 months of age. A group of ferrets is called "a business of ferrets."

[Your user agent does not support inline frames or is currently configured not to display frames. However, you may visit the related document. Ferret grooming tips By Linda Matlack F errets require a lot of the same care as cats and dogs. They need a bath every once in a while. They need their nails cut and ears cleaned frequently. They also need to be groomed a bit. Nail clipping is the most common and most frequently performed grooming habit. Since ferrets hardly sit still for a second, clipping nails can be tricky. A tried and true way of tricking the ferret is what many ferret owners use to help them clip nails. Pour a few drops of Ferretone or Linatone on the ferret’s belly. While the ferret is happily licking up his favorite treat, cut his nails, using small-animal clippers and being sure not to get too close to the quick of the nail. Repeat drops of Ferretone as necessary to get all nails trimmed. Cleaning ears is difficult. If you can get someone to help you with this chore it would be beneficial. The way I clean ears is by scruffing the ferret, dipping the cotton swab in baby oil, then swiftly rubbing all over the ear. Ferrets hate this and will fight you the whole time. You feel guilty for putting them through this, so be sure to give them lots of treats when you finish both ears. It makes you feel better -– not them! Bathing ferrets can be fun or can be a nightmare. First, let me say that ferrets should not be bathed more than once per month because bathing them washes the oils out of the skin, which in turn makes the oil-producing glands work harder to put oil back in the skin, which then causes them to smell worse! So keep baths to a minimum. Some ferrets love baths because they love to play in the water. These types of ferrets make baths fun. Then there are the type of ferrets I have -– the kind that aren’t real pleased to be in the water and claw whenever I try to wash them, constantly trying to climb out of the tub. Then when they are out of the tub, they hate being dried off and are wiggly rats. Oh the joys! If you do succeed in getting your ferrets in the tub, use special ferret shampoo, available at most pet stores, to bathe them.
