    93. American (Hyper)Tale

    http://www.cwrl.utexas.edu/newsletter97/hyper316.html
Literature Class Tells an American (Hyper)Tale by Tonya Browning
My American Literature course is all about connections . . . connections between writers and their culture, between American history and our stories, and between America's past and our future. If we were writing American Literature's biography what might we call it? In my view, an apt name would be HyperNarrative. Like Hypertext, our culture and our writing have nodal elements. Similarly, the narratives of American Literature intersect and overlap with other narratives in our culture. Whether viewed through the lens of criticism or culture, literature consists of more than just text. The category "literature" can contain many different things: plays, folktales, novels, poems, short stories, biographies, pictures, videos, letters, fiction and nonfiction, as well as all their multiple combinations. American Literature is more than the sum of its partsit is the composite narrative of a diverse nation and its people.
