Each week during the month of October, CAC will profile a legendary woman coach who has made a significant contribution to coaching and to sport in Canada. This week's feature is Marina van der Merwe , the head coach of Canada's women's field hockey team from 1976 to 1995. Marina van der Merwe produced one of Canada's most impressive success stories in team sports. When she was named head coach of the national team in 1976, the prospect of Canada being an international powerhouse in women's field hockey seemed almost as logical as Mexico being near the top in ice hockey. But in the 1980s and early 1990s, van der Merwe realized what many considered an impossible task. She took over the 16th ranked Canadian women's field hockey team and led it to three Olympic Games appearances (1984, 1988, 1992) and silver and bronze medals at the 1983 and 1986 World Cups respectively. Over that period, the women's field hockey squad was Canada's best summer sports team, male or female.
