Legend Of The Firewalkers Of Fiji
Many years ago on the island of Beqa (pronounced Mbengga), a tribe called Sawau lived on a mountain village called Navakeisese. In this village there lived a famous storyteller known as Dredre, who regularly entertained the members of the tribe with his stories. It was customary for the people of the village to bring gifts to Dredre in appreciation of his entertainment. On one occasion when asked what gifts he would like, he requested each person of the audience to bring him the first things they would find while hunting the next day. One of the warriors of Beqa called Tui-na-Iviqalita, went fishing for eels (rewai) in a mountain stream. The first thing he caught, felt like an eel, when he pulled it out of the mud, it assumed the shape of a Spirit God. Tui was extremely pleased and set off to present his catch to Dredre, the storyteller. The Spirit God, however, pleaded for his life and offered all manner of gifts in exchange. These Tui refused until finally, the Spirit God offered to give him power over fire and this offer aroused his curiosity. To prove his gift, a pit was dug and lined with stones, and a great fire was lit on the stones. When the stones were white with heat, the Spirit God leapt down on the stones and called Tui to jump in with him. Finally, he plucked up enough courage and was surprised that he did not feel any effect from the heat. The Spirit God then told him that he could be buried for four days in the oven without suffering any injury. However, Tui was afraid to do so, saying that he was quite satisfied to walk on the stones. To this day members of the Sawau tribes are able to walk on white hot stones and direct descendants of Tui-na-Iviqalita still act as Bete, or high priest, of the firewalkers of Fiji.

Fijian culture has managed to remain largely intact despite European contact and the influence of Western culture. However, many of the customs and traditions have been scaled down somewhat. In pre-missionary contact years, rituals, elaborate ceremonies, strict observance of customs were part of the Fijian way of life.
Some of these violent customs were stopped after the missionaries arrived in Fiji. These included rites, associated with cannibalism, such as the piling up of bodies (which were later cooked) for a chief’s installation. Human sacrifice was also a part of daily living then. For example, when the posts for a temple or chief’s house were being set up, live men were put in the holes where the posts were to go - "to hold them up". Thankfully such practices are a thing of the past.
But Fijian tradition and culture still lives on. The Fiji society is a communal one - with values placed high on the family unit, the village and the vanua (land). People in villages and those in urban areas share the communal obligations and rewards of community life and are led by a hereditary chief.

The Samoan way of life, Fa'a Samoa, is unique in the Pacific and a tradition that is proudly upheld by the people. It's a way of life that that binds the community together, yet welcomes strangers in its midst. Thanks to Fa'a Samoa, Samoans live in open houses, yet the crime rate is one of the lowest in the world.

The Samoan people cling tightly to their traditions in the face of increasing modernisation: their tattooing, their oratory, their singing and dancing, their legends, their kava, their fa'a Samoa are vitally important to them.
It is not unusual for men and women alike to be heavily tattooed in traditional patterns with boar teeth needles dipped in soot-based ink. Tattooing is done from breast to knee, where it is not usually seen by the public.
The special matai language, spoken only by selected people, is kept for oratory and ceremonial occasions and is considered an art.

Travel Phonecard Fiji: Creatures, culture and creeps By Jane Dunn I lived in Australia for five months while studying abroad. The experience there was like no other. However, as many people know, the plan ride between Australia and the United States takes forever. On the way there, I was with a group of college students and we were able to turn the plane into a party taking full advantage of the free drinks at the bar. On the way home, I decided to break up the trip with a trip to Fiji. Fiji is not one island but 365 islands. One of the largest issues in going there was figuring out where to go. All large planes fly into Nadi (prounouced NAHNDEE). So, I decided that Nadi was to be my starting point. When talking to people on the plane ride over, I heard about how wonderful Fiji was and how beautiful it was. However, I was not given much of an impression by their opinions. It sounded as though they had only been staying at resorts where you are so secluded and pulled away from locals that you could be absolutely anywhere and it just happens to be Fiji's tropical islands instead of Hawaii's.

Pacific News Member of Culture Gallery Introduction ANGLONESIA Anglonesia is a neologism used here to refer to Australia New Zealand and the United States in the Pacific (ANZUS). The progress from colonialism to independence in the Pacific Islands region (both north and south of the equator) has not brought an end to the influence of the former colonial powers. Presently, there are ten territories or dependencies linked directly to an extraregional government, and five others are constrained in their foreign policies by the terms of their free associaton compacts. Like these territories, the independent states are also affected by the political, security and economic policies of the extraregional powers. There continues to be an overlap of interests between outsiders and islanders, which is likely to persist even as more island stated begin to exert their influence more and more within the region as well as globally. About us
Send me a Brochure Tripbuilder (Shopping Cart) Send me a Quotation ... Pacific News Member of Fiji Culture Fijians still practise many traditional arts and crafts, some of which have endured the destructive impact of western influences and the relentless campaigning of the Christian missionaries, and some which have been modified and embellished to satisfy the demands of tourism. Dance is still strong in Fiji and the narrative meke performances rest on strong oral traditions. Dances are passed down from generation to generation, and in their strict forms the dancers' bodies are said to take on spirits of the netherworld. Mekes accompanied special events like births, deaths, calls to war, marriages and property exchanges. At times of war men would perform cibis with spears and clubs, while women performed deles or wates - dances which sexually humiliated enemy captives. Traditional Indian dances are still taught in Indian communities. The missionaries brought hymns and choir singing to Fiji, and local church singing is truly divine. Popular local musical artists include Seru Serevi, Danny Costello, Michelle Rounds, Karuna Gopalan, Laisa Vulakoro, the Freelancers and the Black Roses. Cassettes of local music are available in Fijian stores. Music from `Bollywood' films (Indian melodramas) is popular amongst Fiji Indians and local bands play covers of Indian songs. At Indian cultural centres performances and lessons are given in traditional Indian music featuring vocal, harmonium, tabla and sitar ensembles.

... Travel Warning History The first European discovery of the Fiji Islands was by the Dutch Navigator Abel Tasman in 1643, but the islands were recorded in detail by Capt. Bligh after the 1789 mutiny of the Bounty. In the 19th century the search for sandalwood, in which enormous profits were made, brought many ships. The influence of the deserters, shipwrecked sailors who settled on the islands disrupted the pattern of life of the indigenous Fijians and gave rise to inter-tribal wars until Fiji was ceded to Britain on 10th October 1874. Culture The visitor to Fiji with even the vaguest powers of perception cannot help but notice the pride of the indigenous people, which comes across in their carriage, their way of looking you squarely in the eye, and their respect for tradition, manifest in their hospitality.

Leave your shoes outside the door when entering a home and keep in mind that it's also insulting to touch someone's head - which can be tempting when you are surrounded by wide-eyed, smiling children. If you are invited to drink kava, don't ask, just enjoy the ritual and the tumb noungue, sorry - the numb tongue. When visiting a village, it is customary to present a gift of kava, which is also known as " yaqona ". The gift, (a "sevusevu"), will cost less than F$20 for a half kilo. If you are accompanied by a guide, he/she will look after that. The sevusevu is presented to the traditional head of the village ("Turaga Ni koro"). After it's been pounded into powder and mixed with water, it is usually served in the head person's house.

Fiji Islanders love to meet visitors. Almost all speak English and you will certainly hear Fijian spoken. The country is multi-cultural and you may sometimes hear Hindi spoken. Beqa is the ancestral home of Fiji Islands' fierce and famous Fire Walkers. These people have the mystic gift of walking barefoot on hot rocks without harm. Ask one of our staff to relate the incredible legend that explains how this came to be. This unique event is part of Lalati Resort's traditional Fijian evening (Meke) complete with native food prepared lovo style. Local villagers will sit around the carved wooden Kava bowl with you, sharing their grog, stories and culture. Lalati Resort supports sustainability on remote Beqa Island. Visiting Lalati is very much of a cultural experience. Remuneration by the resort for cultural events helps support the local villages so that the Fijian culture sustains itself.
The Beqa Islanders are proud to share their native Meke dancing, Firewalking ceremonies and Kava sessions with you. Because Fijians are the friendliest people on earth, you will enjoy knowing them.
