The Fiji Islands - Culture
BACK Fijian, Hindi and Chinese are widely spoken, but almost everyone speaks English too. Of the total population of 800,000, 50% are native Fijian and 46% of Indian origin. The balance are Chinese, Europeans and other Pacific Islanders.
Indigenous Fijians have a 3,000 year old history, a society with a complicated Chiefly hierarchy still practised today. Sharing their cultural experience with you is a vital part of their upbringing and visitors will feel the sincerity.
Fijians dress moderately and revealing clothing is not acceptable in public places, especially villages.
THE LANGUAGE
Communicating in Fiji is really easy. Almost everyone speaks English. We here put together some pointers to correct pronunciation of Fijian which will help you in your visit to Fiji. MORE INFO
YAGONA DRINKING
Participating in the drinking of Yagona (or Kava) is a regularly practised social custom. Made from the root of the pepper plant, it is mildly anaesthetic and if you are offered a cup (bilo) the correct procedure is to clap twice, take the coconut cup and drink at once.
MEKE
The Fijian Meke is a ceremonial occasion with tradi- tional songs and dances, with costumes and stories that vary in each province or island. The music pro- vided is usually on a Lali, a drum carved from the trunk of a tree or bamboo beaten on the ground.

Culture and Society Culture and Society Children of the Sun: Fiji Islands by Glen Craig. Recommended retail price $12.50.
This is a superb collection of wonderful photographs by long time Fiji resident/visitor Glen Craig. Glen (who for reasons known only to himself goes by the epithet Glenbo) has a quirky and vibrant photographic style and his photographic sense of humor shines through. The fly leaf to the book proclaims: “This book is a celebration of the peoples of the fiji islands whose wonderful spirit and spontaneity is evident in the many and varied images. May they and all visitors to these shores protect and nurture this spirit for all present and future Children of the Sun.”
The guff at the back makes much of the fact that only amateur cameras were used and that no scan or system editing was applied. This is really so much sophistry … when you are as good a photographer as Glen is, it really doesn’t matter what system you use. And anyway the distinction between amateur and professional cameras is thin these days.
If you had to buy only one book about Fiji this would be my recommendation … even above my own Fiji’s Natural Heritage (but of course you should buy both!) Soft cover, 136 pages (17 cm by 17cm).

Time To Address Culture Imabalnce In Schools
Follow Ups Post Followup Fiji Discussion Forum Posted by Devant Maharaj on July 21, 2001 at 12:36:06: Time to address culture imbalance schools Archbishop Edward Gilbert, head of the Catholic Church in Trinidad and Tobago recently observed that only 30 per cent of the students at Presentation College, Chaguanas are Roman Catholics. He also expressed his intention to give special attention to Roman Catholic education in Catholic schools. Although Presentation College, Chaguanas, is a Catholic College, by the Concordat signed between the Catholic Church and the Eric Williams administration, they sold the majority of places to the State in exchange for certain financial support. Clause 5 states: "The Principals of Assisted Secondary Schools will make available a minimum of 80 percentum of the First Form entry places to those who by passing the test, qualify on the results of the Common Entrance Examination for free Secondary Education." The present Education Act incorporates the ideas of the Concordat signed in 1960 by the Government and the Roman Catholic Church. It represents the battle for converts, power and cultural space which began when the protestant Anglicans took over Trinidad at the end of the 18th century. The Roman Catholics had to accommodate to a gradual reduction in their institutional power during the 19th century when ward schools were set up to educate the ex-slaves.

One of the fascinating things about going to Fiji is learning about their culture and customs. On Vitu Levu there are two cultural centers that you can go to to learn about the history and customs of Fiji. Some of the pictures below were taken at Kalevu Cultural Center in Society centered around the extended family and families lived together in villages which were headed by a hereditary chief (photo on the left). The village chief was polygamous and intermarried. The village consisted of bures, which are thatched roof huts as seen below. These photos of bures are part of the Kalevu Cultural Center. The tall bure is the priest's bure and the smaller one is where a family lived or where they did their cooking or stored their weapons. There was fierce rivalry between villages and as a result many different weapons were created. Below is a picture of Coconut, the tour guide at Kalevu, showing the group the weapons used by the early Fijians. Replicas of these are now sold as souvenirs As in years past, outside of the main cities, the Fijians still live in villages along the rivers or coast, with 50 to 400 people led by a hereditary chief. The traditional thatched roof bure has been replaced by buildings of tin and panel. They still work the communal land individually and grow most of their own food. One of the highlights of any trip to Fiji is a visit to a Fijian village

Fiji Medical Scool takes culture into account
Courses at the Fiji School of Medicine cover a wide range of topics, including programs in health management, epidemiology, health promotion, food and nutrition. But to what extent do these courses take into account the specific cultural needs of Pacific countries? According to the head of the Fiji School of Medicine's Public Health and Primary Care department, Dr Sitaleki Finau, courses at the school are still not culturally broad enough. Dr Finau has commenced what he refers to as a process of "regionalisation" of his courses, in a bid to help cater for cultural differences of students from across the Pacific. And as he explained to James Panichi, the repackaged courses are expected to produce better health professionals. listen audio help

P eace R esearch- T owards a C ulture of D ialogue for P eace, J ustice and R econciliation TIME FRAME : 18 months June 2001-November 2002 WHY THE PROJECT HAPPENED In response to the May 19th, 2000 political crisis, ECREA initiated a project titled Creating a Culture of Peace, Justice and Reconciliation which included Television and Radio advertisements, booklets, posters and stickers. The theme was Mending Bridges within our Communities Since then ECREA has been developing several approaches to deal with protracted (deep-rooted) conflict. We have chosen a long-term transformative approach, which involves training middle-level leaders who can work on this process in their respective areas with the capacity to move toward a long-term vision of sustainable peace and justice. PROJECT GOALS v To develop a framework and strategies for further dialogue and discourse on cultural/religious symbolism, worldviews, and how these could feed into creating a national platform for articulation of a national identity and symbols; v To develop a capacity building programme for loca l community and religious leaders and government ministries to nurture peace and a vision for the future that meets the needs all communities.
