We started this feature mainly to come up with role models for Fil-Americans specially to our youth. We've been called an invisible minority because we tried to assimilate to the American main stream as quickly as we can. We're hoping that by this feature, we can showcase that Fil-Ams too are as successful as other minorities and capable of achieving more.

Asian American Voices for Affirmative Action by Paul Rockwell
    Oakland, California
In a flip remark last June, University of California (UC) Regents Ward Connerly said: "I would be quite comfortable with only white and Asian students at UC, I have no problem with that."
It was Henry Der, Chair of Chinese for Affirmative Action who took Connerly and Pete Wilson to task. In his eloquent address to the UC Regents, August 20th, Der said: "If Asian American students were to attend certain UC campuses that are exclusively Asian and white, such segregated education would not prepare Asian American students to assume leadership positions in a multiracial California society. As a parent, I do not want any of my three children to experience or choose a segregated college education."
Pete Wilson's attempt to foment hostility between Asian American and African American communities has already backfired. Asian American support for affirmative action is growing. Throughout California's communities of color there is an awakened sense that an injury to one is an injury to all.
Filipinos for Affirmative Action, the Asian Law Caucus, the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance; Kimi Lee, Executive Director of tbe University of California Student Association; and Eddie Wong, Western Region Rainbow Coalition Director, are playing an active role in defending affirmative action for America.

A film by Loni Ding. The untold story of how AsiansFilipino, Chinese, AsianIndianfirst arrived in the Americas. Film crosses centuries and oceans from the 16th century Manila-Acapulco trade, to the Opium War, to the 19th century plantation coolie labor in South America and the Caribbean. 1996. 62 min. Bontoc Eulogy
A personal and poignant docu-drama that examines the Filipino experience at the 1904 St. Louis World's fair. The film focuses on the filmmaker's grandfather, an Igorot warrior, one of the 1,100 tribal natives displayed as anthropological 'specimens' in the Philippine village exhibit. A unique fusion of rare archival images, verite, and carefully orchestrated visual sequences shot in the present, the film is an innovative investigation of history, memory and the spectacle of the "other" in the turn-of-the-century America. 56 min. Video/C 4168 (also as a second feature on Video/C 4393).

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. (ACCNS) I can recall a conversation with a young man at a store some time ago. I had recently been commissioned in the Air Force. When I asked him if he worked in the local area, he said, “I work on base.” He was apparently an active-duty military member. When he asked me where I worked, I replied, “I work on base as well.” But before I could finish my response, he quipped, “Oh, so you work at the BX.”
There are many Asian-Americans who work in the civilian sector on base and provide a valuable service to military people and their families. Despite what some people might think, there are also many Asian-American citizens who dedicate their lives to the United States through military service.
Before I joined the military, I told a man in a business office that I was born in the Philippines and my family and I immigrated to America when I was 13. He was proud to say he was stationed in the Philippines when he was in the military and knew a great deal about the country.
Then he said, “You speak good English.”

The books: Filipino American Lives by Yen Le Espiritu. Temple University Press, Philadelphia. 1995. This is a collection of first person narratives of Filipino Americans from various walks of life, from all over America - especially how race, white domination, generation and community have affected these lives. Some are shallow, some are deep, all are poignant. Ordering Information Philippine Costume by J. Moreno This is a monumental book - covering Philippine Costumes throughout the ages. There are hundres of photographs, in black and white and in color, of tribal costumes, 19th century dresses, dresses of the roaring 20s, models of the 50s and the 60s. Since the author is THE Fashion Czar of Asia, there is a lot of history included in this handsome coffee table book. Pictures of first ladies and royalties wearing the author's creation. Pictures of bygone era of Kahirup balls and cotillions and rigodons at the Manila Hotel and the Malacanang Palace. It really overwhelms the senses. J. Moreno Foundation, Manila, 1995. Search our database by Health Topic or enter your own keywords WOMEN OF COLOR HEALTH DATA BOOK FACTORS AFFECTING THE HEALTH OF WOMEN OF COLOR Asian Americans Although health issues for Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans often are analyzed jointly, in this fact book the groups are separated. Native Pacific Islanders are considered Native Americans and are discussed with American Indians/Alaska Natives. (See discussion of Pacific Islanders in section on Native Americans.) Asian populations are discussed together. This change is made because native Pacific Islanders are only 5 percent of the Asian and Pacific Islander total and often have health outcomes more akin to those of American Indians/Alaska Natives than to Asian subpopulations. In addition, native Pacific Islanders are not immigrants to the United States as are Asian populations. Thus, an effort has been made throughout to disaggregate Asians from Pacific Islanders whenever possible, and to display data for the groups separately. Aggregate statistics for Asians and Pacific Islanders are used, however, when they are the best available. Asian Americans are immigrants to the United States (and their descendants) from more than 20 countries who speak more than 100 different languages. They come from places such as China, India, Japan, the Philippines, Korea, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand and represent more than 60 different ethnicities (22). In 1990, the largest subpopulations (in descending order) were persons of Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Asian Indian, Korean, and Southeast Asian ancestry. By the year 2000, Filipinos are projected to be the largest Asian subpopulation, followed by Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese Americans, in that order (120).
