These people don't know there are many Asian-Americans who immigrated to America on their own, and through hard work and sacrifices became successful and helped make America the great country it is today. Asian-Americans have made remarkable contributions in many aspects of American life, including the arts, science, civics and government, education, sports, business and in the military. According to historical records, Asian-American military service dates back to the 19th century. Numerous Asian-Americans served in the U.S. military during World War I.

Beginning Library Research on ASIAN AMERICAN STUDIES
Stanford University Libraries contain many titles on the historical and contemporary experience of Asian Americans, making it an excellent place for students conducting research in this area. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of Asian American, relevant titles are often dispersed throughout the general collection depending upon subject matter. Use Socrates , Stanford's online catalog to to locate books and other materials. Use the library's print or electronic indexes to locate journal and newspaper articles and published papers. Socrates can tell you what library materials Stanford owns and where they are located, allowing you to search by author, title, call number, organization, or subject. When searching Socrates , it helps to know the Library of Congress Subject Headings. One method of identifying the subject headings is to check the Library of Congress Subject Headings bound volumes. Another (online) method is to locate material you know is on your topic by doing an author (A) and/or title (T) search. Then look at the full display to see what

Asian American Immigration CHINESE MIGRATION Beginning in the 1980s, we have been one of the fastest growing immigrant groups here in the United States. A 1952 Immigration and Nationality Act began to eliminate some of the anti-Asian racism. The act reunified families, protected the domestic labor force, and called for immigration of people with needed skills. It also made us eligible for citizenship, which we had long been waiting for. The 1965 Immigration Act abolished the national-origins quota system and created an annual quota of 20,000 of us Asians. Therefore, the amount of immigrants increased drastically as time progressed. STEREOTYPES Almost ninety percent of Chinese immigrants were women between 1946 and 1952. About 348,000 of us came here from Hong Kong and Taiwan between 1941 and 1980. Beginning in 1981, the number of immigrants increased coming from the mainland as opposed to coming from Hong Kong and Taiwan. We reached a population of 1.6 million people between 1980 and 1990. By the mid-1990s we were approximately one-third of all Asian Americans. As Chinese Americans, we are often mistaken for Vietnamese or Korean Americans. In 1994, Asian Americans were thought of as foreigners who consistently competed for jobs. We have been stereotyped as "model minorities" because we are ambitious and hard working. After the United States declared war on Japan in 1941

Filipino-American Political Participation.. The acknowledged underrepresntation of Asian American in politics, espcially that of Fiipinos, brings to light the question of whether or not Asian should vote for Asian candidates solely on the basis of etnicity. From the Harvard University Philippine Forum and Ugnayang Pilipino Quarterly Publication ten years ago when two Filipino-American were running for the city council. The following are cut and paste form the Publication in 1989. The Editorial..We believe that it is important for Asian American to voice their opinions and to particate in the electoral process. But to vote for a candidate because he/she is a good Fiipino/Asian will not serve the public good unless that candidate is clearly prepared and qualified for the position sought. The question of ethnicity should neither dissuade or persuade one to vote for a particlar candidate. Similarly voters should not automatically support candidates who field Asian running mates. It is a tenuous line taht Asian cadidates must walk in order avoid the stigma of tokenism. Moreover to overcome any qustionss of qualification, Asian candidates must demonstrate the highest levels of aptitude, integrity, and dedication the constituency they hope to deserve.

Because of a predominantly English heritage in the colonial period, the United States often has evaluated its varied citizenries' neighborliness and social inclusion (assimilation) by a single standard: White, Anglo-Saxon, middle-class Protestant. PURPOSE The purpose of this report is to provide a brief history of Asian-Pacific-American immigration; the impact of Asian Pacific Americans on business, education, and the political process; and contributions of Asian-Pacific-Americans to the Department of Defense. For purposes of uniformity, categories of Asian-Pacific- Americans are reported according to those used in the 1990 United States Census, and are not intended to exclude the contributions or diminish the importance of any group. Frederick P. Li, M.D. and Karen Pawlish, M.P.H Geographic Variation in Cancer Incidence Rates . Substantial geographic variations in cancer incidence rates have been found within and among nations. Data show that cancers of the lung, breast, colon/rectum, ovary, and prostate tend to be more common in developed countries In contrast, cancers of the cervix, stomach, and liver are more common in some developing countries, including most Asian nations . Among migrants, cancer incidence rates trend toward patterns in the country of adoption . These alterations in cancer rates are probably due to environmental and lifestyle changes, such as diet and cigarette smoking. Cancer rates can differ even within nations. In the U.S., lung cancer mortality rates are significantly higher in the southeast, where tobacco is cultivated and cigarette smoking rates are high . In China, lung cancer mortality rates are high in the north, in areas with widespread industrial and household pollution from fossil fuels . There are also large regional differences in nasopharyngeal cancer mortality rates in China, with higher rates in the southeast among the Cantonese; explanations may be genetic and dietary factors

Asian Americans Urged to Get Involved,
    Seek Office, Cause Change
By Sherry Fisher "We have to continue to fight invisibility and backlash and stereotyping through politics at all levels - as voters, hopefully as office holders, as contributors, as advocates," she said during a three-day conference "(Re) Presenting Filipino Americans." The symposium explored Filipino culture, history and politics through presentations, panels, round table discussions, performances and visual works. Some 150 academics and activists participated in the event, sponsored by the Asian American Cultural Center and the Asian American Studies Institute. Natividad said more Asian Americans must consider running for office. "It isn't enough for us to envision change, we have to see ourselves as the agents of change," she said. "We have to band together, not only as Filipino Americans, but also with other Asian Americans and present ourselves as a united front with other peoples of color," she said. "It requires us to move beyond our personal comfort zones and to pioneer new areas of mutual interests and involvement. "What makes an American?" Natividad asked. "Is it a yearning for a common language, a culture, a desire to assimilate? Or is it more of an emphasis on preserving one's ethnic identity while finding commonality in a shared belief in this thing that we call democracy?"

    Asian American Older Adults
    SS-194-02
Authors: Eunjee Joo, M.S., Doctoral student, Department of Human Development and Family Science and Christine Price, Ph.D., OSU Extension State Specialist, Department of Human Development and Family Science Asian Americans are a very diverse group. According to the 1980 census, an Asian American elder is described as an older person (age 60 and over) who is Chinese, Filipino, Asian Indian, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, or Pacific Islander which includes Guamanians, Hawaiians, and Samoans. Asian Americans have come to the United States from over 20 countries, represent more than 60 different ethnicities, and speak a multitude of languages (Asian American Health Forum, 1990). A majority of older Asian Americans have either immigrated to the United States as migrant workers or were invited by their children who previously immigrated to the United States with an "American Dream." The number of Asian American older adults is predicted to increase. For example, in 1990, 6% of the Asian and Pacific Islander population in America was 65 or older. By 2050, Asian American older adults will constitute 16% of the persons 65 or older in America (U.S. Department of Commerce, 1993). Despite their large numbers, 60% of Asian American older adults live either California or Hawaii. In contrast, they constitute the smallest population in Virginia and Louisiana (3.1% and 3.7% respectively) (Kim, 1983).
