    Biography

Millard Fillmore was the 13th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES (1850-53), succeeding to that office on the death of Zachary TAYLOR Fillmore was born in Cayuga County, N.Y., on Jan. 7, 1800. His parents were poor, and as a child he had little schooling. An apprentice wool carder, he gained his first formal education in 1819, when a slow period at work enabled him to attend New Hope Academy for 6 months. He then purchased a release from his apprenticeship, worked in a law office, and passed the bar examination in 1823. His law practice flourished, first in East Aurora, N.Y., and then in Buffalo, N.Y., which in 1830 he made his permanent home. Early Political Career Fillmore began his political career in the mid-1820s, as one of the many young men swept up in the anti-masonic movement of western New York. Elected to the state assembly in 1828, Fillmore successfully sponsored a bill to end imprisonment for debt. In 1832 he was elected to the U.S. CONGRESS as an Anti-Mason. In Congress, Fillmore joined the

On July 9, 1850, President Zachary TAYLOR died in office. The next day Vice President Millard Fillmore was sworn in as the 13th president of the United States. He was the second VICE PRESIDENT to assume the PRESIDENCY after the death of a president in office. Fillmore has been considered one of the lesser U.S. presidents. Yet he was a statesman whose support for the Compromise of 1850 helped to prevent civil war and preserve the Union for ten years. He was also a diplomat whose dispatch of a U.S. expedition to Japan helped open that nation to world trade. Early Years Fillmore was born on January 7, 1800, in what was then the frontier village of Locke, New York. He was the second child of Nathaniel Fillmore and Phoebe Millard Fillmore, who had come from New England. The Fillmores were poor tenant farmers, and young Millard spent his early years working alongside his father. As he grew older, Millard realized that his formal schooling was meager. He used his spare moments to educate himself. Even while tending a machine as an apprentice to a cloth maker, he found time to memorize the definitions of words from a dictionary. Law and Marriage At the age of 18, Fillmore became clerk to a county judge, under whom he studied law. In 1823 he was admitted to the bar and opened a law office in East Aurora, New York.

Later, he decided to be a tailor. Fillmore didn’t learn to read until he was an adult. A woman named Abigail Powers taught him to read and in 1826 he married her. She helped him to become a lawyer. Perhaps because he learned to read as an adult, Fillmore especially loved books. He built a permanent library in the White House.” On Line Lesson Plans: Millard Fillmore from TeacherVision

Millard Fillmore's Bathtub In the New York Evening Mail of 28 December 1917 appeared an article by H.L. Mencken entitled `` A Neglected Anniversary .'' The article discussed the very first American bathtub, how the bathtub had faced substantial public, medical and legal opposition, and how one was eventually installed in the White House during the administration of President Millard Fillmore. Mencken made the whole thing up. ``This article,'' he wrote, ``was a tissue of somewhat heavy absurdities, all of them deliberate and most of them obvious.'' ``My motive,'' he explained later, ``was simply to have some harmless fun in war days. It never occurred to me that it would be taken seriously.'' However: Soon I began to encounter my preposterous ``facts'' in the writings of other men.... The chiropractors and other such quacks collared them for use as evidence of the stupidity of medical men. They were cited by medical men as proof of the progress of public hygiene. They got into learned journals and the transactions of learned societies. They were alluded to on the floor of Congress. The editorial writers of the land, borrowing them in toto and without mentioning my begetting of them, began to labor them in their dull, indignant way. They crossed the dreadful wastes of the North Atlantic, and were discussed horribly by English uplifters and German professors. Finally, they got into the standard works of reference, and began to be taught to the young.

    Vice-President and President. top
Later Life. top In 1852 the badly split Whigs nominated Gen. Winfield Scott for the presidency instead of the reluctant incumbent, and they were badly beaten at the polls. After his retirement, Fillmore traveled widely and attempted to revive the disintegrating Whig party by collaborating with the growing anti-Roman Catholic and anti-foreign Know-Nothing movements. In the 1856 presidential election he became the standard-bearer of the Know Nothings, now dubbed the American party, but in spite of the endorsement of the remnant of the Whigs, he ran third behind James Buchanan For the remainder of his long life, Fillmore lived in Buffalo, where he was active in civic affairs. Although he supported the Union during the American Civil War, he was highly critical of the Lincoln administration. He died in Buffalo, on March 8, 1874. Dignified, modest, and well liked by his associates, Fillmore helped calm the North-South controversy that marked his accession to the presidency. Unable to appreciate the moral dimensions of the antislavery struggle, however, he was not strong enough to provide permanent leadership to the deeply divided nation.
