President Millard Fillmore Served 1850-1853 (became President upon the death of Taylor) Millard Fillmore was born January 7, 1800, near Locke Township, Cayuga Country, New York, in a log cabin. He married Abigail Powers on February 5, 1826. They had two children. She taught him to read, and he pursued his studies and became a lawyer. As Zachary Taylor's Whig Party Vice-President, in 1850, Fillmore was the second man to become President after the death of the preceding President. For his elegant tastes and love for reading and books, Fillmore became known as "The American Louis Philippe" (a King of France). His wife encouraged him to make many improvements to the White House and he built the first library there. Marking America's westward expansion, California was admitted to the Union during Fillmore's term as President. The biggest issue of his term in office was slavery, which, as others before him, he tried to solve by making deals. One of these was the Compromise of 1850, which admitted California to the Union as a free state but included a law that all runaway slaves had to be returned to their owners. Fillmore's bid for the Whig Party nomination in 1852 fell to General Winfield Scott, but the Whigs were disorganized, and Scott's opponent Franklin Piece won the election.

On 4 October 1851 the Utah territorial legislature passed a joint resolution creating Millard County from a portion of Iron County known as "Pahvant Valley"; they named its county seat Fillmore City. This resolution also relocated the territorial capital to the new community and appropriated $20,000 toward that effort. On 21 October two companies set out from Salt Lake City for the Pahvant Valley. Brigham Young headed a delegation of lawmakers making the site selection of the territorial capital. The other company, under the direction of Anson Call, was chosen to make a settlement. On 28 October territorial lawmakers selected a spot located on the hunting grounds of the Pahvant Indians, 150 miles south of Salt Lake City. A monumental statehouse was planned to be constructed to house the territorial government. Truman O. Angell, architect of the Salt Lake Temple, designed an elaborate structure of four wings in the form of a cross with a Moorish dome at the center. Local red sandstone and native timber were to be used in its construction. The first wing was completed for the fifth annual session of the Utah territorial legislature which convened in Fillmore on 10 December 1855. Inauguration Judge William Cranch administered the executive oath of office to Vice President Millard Fillmore on July 10, 1850 in the Hall of the House of Representatives. President Zachary Taylor had died the day before. Biography: In his rise from a log cabin to wealth and the White House, Millard Fillmore demonstrated that through methodical industry and some competence an uninspiring man could make the American dream come true. Born in the Finger Lakes country of New York in 1800, Fillmore as a youth endured the privations of frontier life. He worked on his father's farm, and at 15 was apprenticed to a cloth dresser. He attended one-room schools, and fell in love with the redheaded teacher, Abigail Powers, who later became his wife. In 1823 he was admitted to the bar; seven years later he moved his law practice to Buffalo. As an associate of the Whig politician Thurlow Weed, Fillmore held state office and for eight years was a member of the House of Representatives. After serving in congress, Fillmore, a Whig, was Zachary Taylor's vice president. When Taylor died in office, Fillmore became President. His attempts to compromise on the slavery issue left him with few fans on either side, and his stay in the White House was brief. In the election of 1852 Fillmore failed to get the nomination at the Whig convention (the candidate from the Democratic Party, Franklin Pierce , went on to win the election). In the election of 1856 Fillmore ran for president as a candidate of the Know-Nothing Party, but carried only Maryland.
