NORTHERN VISIONS: FUNDING
Myth or Magic'…………...first find the money!'
So you'd like to make a film or video? First question on most people's lips: how to find the money to make it?
True independent film production is about financing films from sources that have no control over your story, your vision and your creative ideas. You are free to make the film you want to make… which generally means that you may have to finance the film yourself! But hey, we're an impoverished artistic community and few filmmakers have the resources to completely make their own films…so…
FUNDING CONSIDERATIONS
This is where the various film-funding agencies come on board and hopefully help you realise your dream film! There are a number of funders you can turn to but they all impose conditions: receiving their funding depends on the type of film you are proposing. Is your film meant for non-broadcast use i.e. for a local community group, an educational group, a campaign tape for a pressure group? Is it a major film drama for cinema release? Is it a documentary aimed at television? Who will help you to make the film? Are you employing professionals in the film industry or making the film with friends who have a bit of know-how or a mixture of both? Answering these questions will determine whom you approach to raise the necessary funds and of course how much finance you will need.
Most filmmakers spend a large proportion of their time not in front of a television or cinema screen but a computer screen; filmmakers have to be good writers! Everything starts from a script: you must begin by putting your ideas clearly down on paper, and there's nothing beats a good idea….the film may end up looking completely different from the script but hey you're a creative person with an ever-changing creative idea! So success in raising funds depends on how strong your idea comes across on paper. This is generally all that potential funders have to go on! It doesn't matter if you have a list of award winning credits as long as your arm…even Ken Loach has trouble raising money for each new film…it's the ideas in the script that matter to funders at this stage.

    Ultra-Low Budget Film Making
One of the achievements of Kung Fu Vampire Killers is that it was made for the ridiculously small budget of just $NZ14,000 (just over $US6,000). Let's face it, next to 'Lawrence of Arabia' or 'Titanic', it looks cheap. It is also kinetic, exciting, suspenseful, and very funny. KFVK revels in the grungy quality of the heavily processed video and makes up for what it lacks in 35mm gloss with boundless energy and chutzpah. "I think if we had more money we may well have made a less good film"says director Phil Davison.

o Comedy romance - former tough guy inherits failing Florist business and decides to make a go of it.

    Shoot on DV
If you shoot on any kind of film you'll get that "film look" but it will cost you an arm and a leg. Every time an actor forgets their lines, every time a mic falls into shot it will cost you an arm and a leg. You'll get tense. Everyone else will get tense. You'll have no limbs left. When an actor gives a performance that's merely OK you'll be tempted to say 'Print', instead of going for the dynamite performance that might be just around the corner.

We have worldwide experience of travel, research, photography, and filming in remote places, built up over 33 years. Most of our films are of Wildlife and Environmental subjects, but also include Anthropology, Documentary and Adventure titles. We normally work to produce and deliver a complete film package, from the birth of a concept; through research; reconnaissance; budgeting; treatment and script writing; filming on location, using our own full production facilities; through all stages of post-production to delivery of a finished film, together with accessory materials. However we also take on sequence material for other productions, providing personnel and equipment as necessary, and we specialise in aerial filming , utilising our own series of sophisticated camera mounts. Folks,
My concern for the future of the University of Washington is that it does
not teach film-making and television production outside of extension
courses. Cinematic studies are scattered between Drama, Comparative Literature, various area studies programs, and English, and concentrate far more on analysis than creation. The university seems to be ignoring the most pervasive art in our culture, that of recorded drama for television and film, to focus on the smaller, historical art that spawned it, the theater of the stage. Clearly the stage has a great deal to teach those who make films or television shows, and the history and techniques of theater are worth
