Batman (1989)
by Gerry Velasquez While this wasn't the first adaptation of the famous comic book hero, it still is, in my opinion the best. The film centers around the acceptance of the Batman (Michael Keaton) by the public. He must also face the Joker (Jack Nicholson) and deal with his love for Vicky Vale (Kim Basinger). http://www.makingthefilm.com/
Making the Film is a project that I have set up to document my transition into the world of film-making from an unrelated background. The project will culminate with the production of a low-budget feature film. The film will put into practice all the advice and tips I will undoubtedly pick up along the way. Latest News ( 04-Apr-03 ): Today I begin the second draft of my new film, Napanee . I am still on target to direct the film in June. Click here to see what people are saying about MakingTheFilm.Com. This web site has been split into four main themes. Firstly, the Diary , which I tend to update every time something interesting happens, or a milestone is met. The second theme is the Quick-Start Guide to Filmmaking . As I pick up excellent filmmaking tips from the pros, I will add them to this guide, which itself is constantly undergoing changes as the guide moves from an assorted collection of tips to a small guide for filmmakers. The third part of the site is the Interviews section. This began quietly, but has progressed beyond all expectation. You can find interviews with BAFTA nominees, festival organisers, special effects experts, and much more. The final part of the site will be The Screening Room , a repository of video clips and stills. These will be used to store any short films, interviews, photography tests and image demos that I either make or am given permission to use by other filmmakers.

The Snuff Film
The Making of an Urban Legend
One of the most enduring, and little-recognized, urban legends about cinema is the "snuff film," in which actresses are supposedly actually killed onscreen. Over the course of nearly a quarter century, the snuff film has transformed from grade-Z slasher film to hoax to anti-pornographers' straw man to urban legend, and shows no sign of slowing down. Scott Aaron Stine Urban legends are everywhere. For many of us, our lives are made more interesting by the mere presence of such guilty pleasures. For others, the legends are very real, and hold as much-if not more-power than fears that can be justified. They are a means for us to indulge even our most morbid inclinations by the simple act of relaying well-worn accounts that fall somewhere between gossip and campfire tales. It can be rightfully said that they are the folklore of the industrial generation.

Stop Making Sense (1984) White Sneakers, Big Suit Stop Making Sense , the 1984 Talking Heads movie, is a masterpiece of the concert film genre. Conceived for the stage by lead singer David Byrne, and directed by Jonathan Demme ( Silence of the Lambs Philadelphia , and Swimming to Cambodia ), the film is a visionary presentation of stage performance, sound, rhythm, choreography, and soul. The film begins when Byrne, wearing a gray suit and impeccably white sneakers, walks onto the barren center stage and sets a boom box down on the floor. "Hi. I've got a tape I want to play," he says, as if the crowd consisted of three friends sitting on his living room couch. As the opening beats of "Psycho Killer" emerge from the tape player, the camera slowly rises from Byrne's tapping sneaker to his guitar, and then up to his head, which bobs hypnotically to the music. Stop Making Sense contains well-edited footage from three concerts. It eschews elaborate sets, long-winded speeches, and special effects, and relies instead on Demme's minimalist camera skills and the band's considerable performing capabilities. Three of the band membersByrne, bassist Tina Weymouth, and drummer Chris Frantzattended the Rhode Island School of Design, which may be why the set looks so good.

An Ode to TLC (The channel, not the group)
April 07, 2003
by: Steph I am obsessed with TLC. I can start watching it at 8 AM and not turn it off until 8 PM. I'd like to take some time to talk about the shows I watch regularly. A Baby Story - Now this is probably the show I like the least of all the shows on this network. I still watch it like all the time. Makes me not want to have kids. What have I learned from this show? Epidurals are necessary. A Wedding Story - I'm a pretty fickle watcher of this show. I like watching cute couples get married. As soon as the wedding starts looking a little strange or the woman pulls out some off the wall dress, I change that channel asap. The one that is on right this minute is pretty awful. The guy has a pretty crazy mullet. A Makeover Story - I LOVE this show. I would seriously want to go on this show but I know they'd cut my hair (which is something I'm considering doing myself anyway) and I haven't quite worked up to that yet. People nearly ALWAYS look so much better after their makeover. I can only think of like two really awful haircuts where the person has come out looking not so hot. A Dating Story - This show makes me laugh because the people are so rarely compatible. I'm usually not much for dating shows but I enjoy this one because they always go to really cool places on their dates. The best ones are still the ones where the people clearly hate each other. That's good TV.
