The Finnish Language in the United States
Selma Siiri Sahlman
The Finnish language in Finland has developed in a comparatively short time to such a great extent that individuals who have not had contact with Finnish in its native country have many difficulties in understanding it. The constant change in Finnish has been overwhelming. This accounts for the fact that Finns arriving today in the United States encounter a language spoken by the older immigrants that is very different from what they are accustomed to. Inasmuch as immigration into the United States from Finland took place chiefly in the years between 1850 and 1914, it is only natural that the language which the immigrants carried over was a tongue spoken at the time of their departure from their native country. The first Finns, however, arrived on the Delaware at the time the colony of New Sweden was founded. It is believed that the Finns formed the majority of the settlers in that colony, and they cleared such regions as the site of Philadelphia for civilization. The Finnish language of these early settlers was, however, at an early date displaced by English. The Finnish language before World War I had already achieved a standard speech level which, however, was greatly modified later on. Swedish had been the language of the educated classes in Finland, and it was the language of the schools during a long period. The Finnish nationalist movement, which started in the middle decades of the nineteenth century, maintained the equality of the Finnish language with the Swedish. The Finnish speech in common use contained a host of Swedish words for which there were native equivalents. Since the tendency to clear the land of Swedish elements grew stronger and stronger during the immediate period after Finnish independence in 1917, it is easy to understand that the transmission of those foreign elements to the American continent is largely due to the immigrants who brought their speech habits with them.

A chance to speak Finnish
Text by Joe Brady/Virtual Finland
Drawings by Pekka Vuori It is fair to say that Finnish is rather difficult to learn for anyone who does not speak one of the Finno-Ugric languages. Even for those who do there are problems. For instance, Finnish and Hungarian belong to the Finno-Ugric group but they are far from being mutually comprehensible, as far apart as, say, Russian and Gaelic. It's not that Finnish is inherently difficult; but its origins make it different from most of the other languages of Europe. There are a few exceptions: Finnish and Estonian are closely related and there are a few other small kindred languages such as Lapp, also known as Saame, which is spoken in the northern parts of Scandinavia, and the Kola Peninsula of north-western Russia. Other Finno-Ugric languages are spoken here and there in eastern Europe and Russia parts of the Eurasian landmass. So, for fun rather than academic advancement Virtual Finland here offers you a chance to learn a few Finnish pleasantries that could be really useful if you have the good fortune to visit Finland. Click on the Finnish words to hear how to say them.

End of article
The Finnish Language on the Delaware
Even though Finland and Sweden were politically united in the seventeenth century, the common people of Finland maintained their own language, and this was true, to some extent, of the nobility as well. Thus, when groups of Swedes and Finns migrated to America, both Swedish and Finnish were spoken in the settlements established at Fort Christina (now Wilmington, Delaware), at Fort Elfsborg (just south of Mill Creek on the New Jersey side of the Delaware river), at Upland (now Chester, Pennsylvania), at Tinicum (an island just below Philadelphia), and along the lower reaches of the Schuylkill, and eventually, as the settlers moved out from the fortifications, at places like Crane Hook and Tacony. The records are such that it is impossible to separate satisfactorily the Finns from the Swedes, but the settlers designated Finns in the sources at our command are as follows: Abraham the Fin, of Fort Christina (Hall, p. 315)
Anders the Finn (JSSD, pp. 462-64, 717)
Lars Anderson the Finn (JSSD, p. 717)
