The Modern Finnish as a Foreign Language programme is oriented towards modern Finnish, its technolects, contrastive studies and translation, and Finnish History and Culture. Modern Finnish as a main subject consist of study units (30 ECTS credits each): basic studies, subject studies, advanced level studies and MA thesis. Finnish in Finnish
by Carmen Boudreau-Kiviaho I took my first Finnish course at the Suomi Koulu (Finnish School) in Sudbury in early 1997. I was lucky to have stumbled upon an ad in the Northern Life newspaper. It came at the right time because my plans to come to Finland in the summer of 1997 were in full swing by that time. Since then I have been learning the Finnish language and I have been living in Finland for almost four years. (My how time flies!) I have been in a course every winter since I have been here and it sure has helped! Where I work however, though the majority of the people working there are Finnish speakers, I operate on a daily basis in English because that is what my job calls for. So I really only use Finnish when I am out and about in public. I beg to use English only when I really don't understand what is being said, or I use it in formal situations where knowing the information is key (i.e. tax office, doctor, etc.) I must however, be very proud of myself, because I have gone to visit the same insurance agent twice in the last year and with her I have been able to function in Finnish just fine! J At this point in time I am taking courses at the University of Helsinki, thankfully sponsored and fully endorsed by my workplace. I may even be able to put them towards degree studies of some kind if I chose to go back to school.

A nation of five million people, Finland is situated between West and East, between Sweden and Russia, sharing for thousands of years religious, historical, political, social, and cultural influences and experiences with its neighbours and the different worlds they represent. Finnish studies at the University of Toronto are presently engaged in teaching the Finnish language - a three-year sequence together with a linguistics course, to be introduced later, that will be of interest to all students of language - and in offering other courses on the literature and culture of Finland.
