Introduction Language Resources Cultural Links Facts For Kids Language: The Mi'kmaq language, Mi'kmawi'simk or Mikmawisimk, is an Algonquian language spoken by 7500 Indians in the Canadian Maritimes, particularly Nova Scotia. Mi'kmaq is also spoken by 100 or so older people in northeastern Maine and by nearly 1000 Mikmaqs in immigrant communities in New York and Boston. The dialect spoken in Quebec is called Restigouche (or Listiguj) and is a little bit hard for other Mi'kmaq speakers to understand. Mi'kmaq is written alphabetically today, but in the past it was written in pictographs . Though these pictographs were likely modified by Jesuit missionaries, who used them to help Mi'kmaq converts remember Christian prayers, they probably predated European contact. Micmac hieroglyphics do not resemble Ancient Egyptian or Mayan hieroglyphs see here for an explanation of these different writing systems. Mi'kmaq is not linguistically related to Ancient Egyptian or any other semitic languages, this data was

Once again, the community of Burnt Church and the Mikmaq Nation are fighting the Canadian government, determined to protect their people's ancient Inherent right to fish, which has been exercised since time immemorial. They are found in Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Island, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, and New Brunswick. French missionaries came into contact with them in the early 17th cent., and the Micmacs were allies of the French throughout the history of New France. Contact with the whites has not had the usual effect of tribal disintegration, and the Micmacs still thrive, though their culture has changed radically. Many are Roman Catholics. The Micmacs are expert canoeists, and, although their economy once centered on fishing and hunting, they now derive their income from agriculture. See W. D. and R. S. MICMAC
T he Micmacs of eastern Canada and the northeastern corner of the United States (who prefer the phonetic spelling Mi'kmaq) first appeared in their homeland approximately ten thousand years ago. They call the region Mi'kma'ki. Archaeological evidence indicates that these first inhabitants arrived from the west and lived as hunters and gatherers attuned to the shifting, seasonal resources of the area. During the summer months they hunted and fished, sometimes venturing out to sea to hunt whales and porpoises. Their winter camps were inland, built along rivers and lakes so that they could augment their hunting by spearing and trapping eels and other water creatures. T keptan or saqmaw (district chief) presided in each jurisdiction, doubling as local ruler and delegate to the Grand Council Sante' Mawiomi. T he Grand Council was the governing body of the nation and was led by several officers, including a kji'saqmaw (grand chief), a putus (treaty holder and counselor), and a kji'keptan (grand captain, advisor on political affairs). The Sante Mawiomi determined where families might hunt, fish, and set up their

The administrators of this site recommend their two complete Cajun cookbooks for classroom use. Each of the online cookbooks contains more than 500 recipes and is divided into the usual categories of recipes: appetizers, entrees, drinks, salads, side dishes and so on. Under entrees you will find scores of Cajun dishes, including gumbos, etouffees, and jambalaya. What may strike you as a bit unusual, however, is the number of dishes not normally considered Cajun. Upon closer examination, you'll find most of these are recipes for traditional dishes with a Cajun twist. Char's Original Cajun Recipes Designed to look like a kitchen, Char'scollection features a small but interesting variety of Cajun and Creole recipes that highlight the essentials of Louisiana cooking. Among the unique offerings here are Char's recipes for Cajun-style chili, spaghetti, and vegetable beef soup. Of course, there are plenty of Cajun standbys, including red and brown jambalaya, Louisiana roux gumbo, and shrimp/crawfish creole. Be forewarned, however, that some of the recipes call for such ingredients as andouille and tasso pork, which may be difficult to find.
