Pest Fish (Freshwater)
Freshwater ecosystems are vulnerable to invasion by pests and weeds because it is very hard to detect them until they are a problem. Once they have invaded a waterway and become pests it is very difficult to remove them because they are able to spread through a whole river catchment. It is very important to prevent pest fish from invading into places where they aren’t already. Many people are unaware of the damage done to our waterways by pest fish. Unfortunately some types of introduced fish have spread into the wild, become pests and are threatening New Zealand’s freshwater species and environments by;
  • Stirring up sediment and making the water murky Increasing nutrient levels and algal concentrations Contributing to erosion Feeding on and removing aquatic plants Preying on invertebrates, native fish and their eggs

Freshwater Fish
In recent years there has been a rapid expansion of the range of some species of introduced freshwater fish. Some of these fish have become serious pests in the wild. Once pest fish are established in the wild, with self-sustaining populations, it is very difficult to eradicate them. It is much easier to preventing the further spread of these species. The best way to do this is through education but there are laws that should help prevent the spread of pest fish.
Public Education
The Department of Conservation has information that describes the dangers posed by pest fish and how you can help prevent their spread. If you would like to get copies contact your local DOC office or check out the extensive pest fish information in the pests and weeds section of this site.
Legislation and Policy
There is a variety of legislation that governs freshwater fish in New Zealand, designed to protect our freshwater environments from alien invaders. Here are the relevant bits that relate to pest fish.

Cleaning Fish Dateline 08/03/98 I ate fish often while growing up. Most were small bream and cats caught in local ponds. After I got married. Linda and I ate fish a lot - out of economic need. We would fish for bass during the day but release all them and run trot lines at night for cats. Then I learned to filet bass and now filet everything I catch. Filets are much better to me than fish cleaned any other way. Fileting fish is fairly easy. Following is a step by set process that works for me. 1. Catch a fish. I prefer bass of about 1 1/2 pounds and never keep bass over three pounds, letting the bigger ones go to catch again. You can filet any fish but bigger bream and crappie are better. Hybrids from 1/2 to three pounds are good, too. 2. Ice fish down over night. Fish left on ice overnight produce bloodless filets the next day and are much less "fishy" tasting, I think. Fish fileted and fried on the lake bank right after catching them are best, but if I am going to wait till I get home to clean them I always ice them down.

A Family Tradition since 1932 PRODUCTS - If it can be done to a freshwater fish Stoller Fisheries can do it for you.
Stoller Fisheries specializes in fish products from freshwater fish, and all of its products are kosher under supervision from Star-K. Stoller Fisheries operates under HACCP and has been assigned an export approval number from the United States Food and Drug Administration. Stoller Fisheries also produces a full line of fish caviars, commercial baits, byproducts from fish waste, and engages in custom processing.
Feature 1:
PLATE-FROZEN FISH BLOCKS The supply of plate-frozen fish blocks from either mechanically deboned (minced) fish and small filets is becoming more and more scarce from traditionally species such as COD. Stoller Fisheries is investigating the installation of a plate freezer to plate freeze blocks of filets and mechanically deboned fish from under utilized species of fresh water fish such as carp, buffalo fish, fresh water sheep head, and fresh water suckers. Custom processing is available.
Feature 2:
SOUP BASES AND FISH STOCKS
As a primary processor Stoller Fisheries is capable of mincing (mechanically deboning) up to 60,000 pounds of under utilized species of fresh water fish daily. These fish include the common carp, buffalo fish, fresh water sheep head (drum), fresh water sucker (also known as the fresh water mullet) and many other species. The company can also mechanically debone salmon and ocean species. There is a growing demand for minced fish to be used as dehydrated soup bases and as fish stocks and Stoller Fisheries can custom process these fish for your needs. Please direct your inquiry to either Tom Opheim or Larry Stoller.
